The dog looked like a Springer Spaniel. Have you ever tried to keep a Springer away from water of any kind? They live for water. They're fantastic swimmers. Still, not sure I wouldn't have jumped in to save my dog. I'd fight a bear for my dog. Glad it all worked out safely for all.

I had a greyhound mix who didn't love water. No interest in lakes, ponds, etc. However, couldn't resist a river! As in, the Missouri River. She would just launch herself into a rapidly running river. Insane. Needless to say, she was always leashed around rivers (after she gave us heart attacks the first time!) It is hard to stand by and watch a dog go down in water, but sometimes there is no choice. Those little doggie life jackets seem pretty great.
I can’t swim Lynnmar77, it’s not for the want if trying, can keep myself afloat for a while & propel myself with my legs, but the minute I try to use my arms too, I sink like a 🧱, no coordination whatsoever!😱😬😂

My best friends next door neighbors both drowned trying to retrieve their dog from a river island. There was a very cold current under the surface that did them in. And he was a trained water rescue person. The dog survived, but sadly, they didn’t.
Have to be honest, I have had to rescue two of my dogs from the water. It is really hard to resist the temptation to jump in after them. My dad was a policeman and he always taught us that the first thing you do at an accident is make sure there isn't another one. He said most people that die from drowning are trying to rescue someone else. At my high school we didn't do competetive swimming, but we all had to do our bronze medallion for life saving.
I am glad that the guy and his dog are okay; but I also think that they are not very bright having the dog there without being on a leash. Here in Canada it is illegal to take a dog for a walk without one. That should be standard everywhere; so a dog doesn't run up on people, etc. I am glad that you didn't go in your dinghy after them, Fiona, and that you got your buoy back. We don't want any harm coming to you, dear lady! Blessings to you both and your family =).

I have been missing that voice. I would have jumped in too. Been rescued, and met you both! You love them so much you just turn off your common sense I guess., Graham. What kind of dog was it? Not the smartest one. Probably a purebred. They look good ,cost thousands and r not as smart as mixed breeds . Also not as healthy as mixed breeds, and believe me from personal experience the best and smartest dogs are cross breeds.

How frightening. We had a kayak in the river close by my house overturn yesterday and he drowned. This caught my attention needless to say. 😔
