  • On This Day 1975: 'Despotic Dictator's Firing Squad Threats To Author'
British writer Denis Hills was arrested in Uganda after referring to its President Idi Amin as the "black Nero" and a "village tyrant" in one of his books.
Hills was freed after the Queen interceded and the UK Government sent Foreign Secretary James Callaghan to Kampala to bring him home.
Amin was a military dictator who seized power in a coup in 1971 and is believed to be responsible for up to 500,000 deaths during his reign, which ended in 1979. He died in exile in Saudi Arabia in 2003.

If General Blair went in with all guns blazing ,as Amin suggested that he did ;It was a rather silly attitude to take against a lunatic, as he simply was endangering the author's life and it seemed that Blair was heading back with a flea in his ear after his meeting with Amin.
I remember General Chaudery, from the Indian forces making a brief visit to Uganda when Amin expelled the Asians and was talking about concentration camps . There didn't appear to be any western media interest in General Chaudery's visit.
Luckily for us Amin did not carry out construction of .concentration camps for those Asians who could not get out of Uganda the end of the 90 days , like my father and my maternal grand parents.

But seems General Blaire was rude yet he was supposed to be diplomatic to save a life. Refusing to be photographed with the president, telling his team to leave b4 they finished & threatening military intervention was so inconsiderate of the life on the line.

"Bwana Mkubwa" was the favourite title for colonialists. They demand Africans to bow down to them and call them bwana mkubwa (Big man, boss) etc.
