    Damn, lost count how many hours I have in one of these things. In 1987 I was in a minor crash when some hydraulic lines popped and separated hot cherry juice all over the cockpit and we hit the ground damn hard and almost wiped out a small church in front of us. My knees were shaking for a few hours after that one, lol.

      @Jack-yl7cc 3 года назад +1

      @Steven Strain It is more fuel efficient to gain altitude while flying forward instead of trying to go purely vertical to gain altitude. The rolling takeoff method is also commonly used when the helicopter is near its weight capacity or already at high enough altitude to degrade the engine performance.

    • @flightwriterNG
      @flightwriterNG 3 года назад +2

      Taxiing out to the runway for departure helps maintain the airport's normal traffic pattern, and keeps rotorwash well away from parked aircraft. There are also efficiency benefits with this kind of modified rolling liftoff, as others have noted.

      Hey Fernando, Both the Chinook and the Huey are fantastic machines. But all machines have a life span and unfortunately the Huey has been retired after many years of great service. Cheers!

    I had the opportunity to fly on these big birds as an Iowa Guardsman, 1/133 INF, in the late 70s and early 80s. Many of them had repaired Vietnam battle damage.

    I wonder what the cost of fuel was. Even before it got off the ground. Lol. And how those blades miss each other I'll never really understand. Lol. I was underneath one of these when it took off once. When I say underneath I was probably about 150 feet away. But believe me when I say it's close enough. I was in my teens so 40 plus years ago. I live right next to the howe army barracks in Canterbury Kent. Not sure I've spelled howe correctly. It was night time and one landed. My garden at the time literally backed onto the army land. It's engines had been running for around half hour after landing and I thought I wonder what is going on. As I got within about 150 foot of it the army guys got in and it took off. I was in the bushes or I would have got shouted at if seen. As it took off I thought to myself WTF am I doing. Lol. But it was worth it. They are AMAZING. Especially being so close.

      😅YEA WELL, NO NEED to feel shame over that... You have to remember that there will ALWAYS be REALLY good machines, AND GOOD machines, Then there are machines that are OK... BUT the most important part to REMEMBER is that ALL MILITARY machines from REALLY good to OK machines are built by the lowest bidder❗️ So, what we really need to Hope for, is that ALL the DUDES & DUDE’ ets that work on & maintain these things, are ALL TOP NOTCH , HIGH SPEED LOW DRAG MOTHER - - - - - - - - - - - - , who ALL HAVE THEIR SHIT TOGETHER and didn’t sleep through TECH SCHOOL when learning to work on & maintain these suckers before the rest of us get on or near them😉 👍

Like that plant in Fukushima...now who could have thought there would be THAT hell of a Tsunami+ all emergency generators suddenly said goodbye and went for a swim. Were all just humans, were not perfect but we try, lets build our next reactor, we make it Tsunamisafe this time, now we really cant think of anything else that might go wrong this time....

    That loud whine at the beginning is a small jet engine at the rear that would about fit into a shoebox that starts the turbine engines.

    I have not seen one of these beasts in the air in a long time. I used to live near Kirkland AFB before the pandemic. One thing that always annoyed the crap out of me was hearing that "chopping" sound every day. Guessing it was training pilots or practice of some kind. But what ever it was, you could hear that chopping sound all the time. And it was not one chopper, it was like 2 or 3 running at the same time. I'll tell ya, it can drive you nuts sometimes.
