      Every time I buy a new vehicle, the first thing I do is drive straight home and learn how to jack up and change the tire. NO two vehicles were ever the same. The worst is the MINI Cooper. It's a pain in butt trying to align the pad with the jacking points on the car. VW makes it easier: just line it up with the vertical fence under the chassis and up it goes.

    Dude! You are awesome for posting this. Bought my truck new in 2017, and never gave much thought to having to change a flat. At 63 years of age, I have changed so many I assumed it would be straight forward when the time came. So naturally went to the owner’s manual and it was useless for really explaining the lowering of the spare. The key points you provided were inserting the flared end at an angle and turning that bracket 90 degrees. No mention of either in the manual. Seriously, people like yourself restore my faith in humanity. Many thanks!

      Have a 2017 Ram and the same for @smulherin1. At 75 I have owned a series of Rams but never have used a spare. The manual was useless. You took all the frustration out of lowering the tire to access some wiring.

    Getting ready for a trip next week and thought I'd run thru some details. Good thing I did. Spare was flat and the tool kit release nut was frozen.
    I strongly suggest that owners do some rehearsal. That retaining nut under the seat can be a butterfly nut that is one-piece on a threaded shaft that runs down through the floor into a bolster. The threads will be rusted and can be very hard or impossible to turn. I had to use channel locks to get a hold on the ears and get it turning. If it's a hex nut, be sure you have a wrench to fit or it might not be going anywhere. If yours has the solid shaft, you should take it out and clean the threads and coat them with bearing grease. Save yourself additional heartache when you're on your knees in the rain somewhere.
    Keep a small flashlite to spot the square nut that the sectioned rod end drives onto. Feeling for it the dark is no bueno because the rod sections are loose and it's hard to get a feel for where the end is inside the body - unless you've done it before. The little square hole next to the port is a good spot to shine the light into while you sight down the rod thru the port. Simple.
    Very helpful video. Thank you.

      Thank you @OutnBacker! Going on a road trip and checked out what you say here. I had to use penetrating oil and used a screw driver for leverage on that "wing nut" for practice. NOI WAY I would have gotten that loose by hand. Thanks for the heads up!

I was scared because I bought the used truck months earlier and had no idea how to get the spare down. You were very thorough with this procedure.

    Just a tip, if you have locking lug nuts you may have a lock on your spare as well we ran into this. There will be a star pattern instead of a nut where you stick the rod in to lower the tire. There should also be a piece in your glove box with your lug key that will fit into your flare end and you insert that into your lowering device.

    If your truck is a few years old good luck turning that nut, especially if you live in a cold climate where the roads get salted. Had a flat in my 2013 Ram a couple years ago. Tried to drop the spare down and that nut was completely seized up to the point where the rods were twisting and bending. Could't get it to break loose. Didn't have enough leverage with those cheap rods that come with the jack. I've always thought this was a poorly designed system but yet every year truck that comes out still has this set up. Luckily I was home and the tire went flat over night or I would have been stranded somewhere. Just a tip: Now in my new Ram I lower the spare and raise it back up a couple times a year just to keep that nut moving so it doesn't seize up like my in last truck.

    Apparently me and my wife just got screwed. We bought a 2016 big horn in 2017 and it was the rental version truck, had 13000k miles on it. Apparently it had a flat previously and they never put the star tup extension piece back in. I callesnthe service department to get a new one they said they are all unique and I'd have to pay to remove the star lock and install a new one and buy a new star tip kit. Is this true? Are they all unique star tips?

    Owned my truck for 4 years now. Pulled out the jack just to do some preventive maintenance and "learn" how it all worked so I'd be prepared under combat conditions. Well here I am! I know...its in the manual but who reads directions these days.

    Appreciated but not same 2013 2500 hd has connectors to frame of passenger seat small difference I know but owners will have to reach under and pull all 4 components (to drop tire) individually

      Same thing. In reverse

    • @NinetyOneAdventures
      @NinetyOneAdventures 3 года назад

      @@DaltonP2156 the tire was wobbling the entire way up so I had to crank with one hand and steady it with the other. When it came down it didn't do that. So I'm looking for the trick to get it steady on the way up without having to hold it.

    • @DaltonP2156
      @DaltonP2156 3 года назад

      @@NinetyOneAdventures just make sure you put it on evenly. Once it’s most way up just keep cranking till it’s tight

    • @gggnumber1
      @gggnumber1 3 года назад

      @@NinetyOneAdventures Just did the same thing. I put it back on with the air valve up (the side that would be outside when on the vehicle). Didn't go all the way. Cranked it down. Flipped it. Cranked it back up. If ya look at the rim, lying on the ground, the 'well' is deeper on the side that will be Inside when the wheel is on the car. Outside is more shallow. The cable stopped cranking with the wrong side up and tire was loose.

    I was absolutely clueless as to how to get this tire off. I felt like an idiot. Now I don't, because that isn't close to common sense, lol. My truck didn't come with these tools. Where can I buy them?

    • @PYR-Auto
      @PYR-Auto  10 месяцев назад

      You may be able to buy them at a Dodge/RAM dealership's Parts Department but I would search around online first as they will be cheaper
