About REPO and Paris: My brother in law's friend, Joey went to college with Terrance (Grave Robber), and he actually did work on the film with Terrance as a favor since they're friends... Well apparently, the budget was running super slow, and they didn't know how they were going to fill in things like - costume, make-up, and other misc. items and extras. So Paris Hilton stepped in and funded them, as well as donated her own personal clothing line to the extras in order to get that luxury feel to it that they were looking for. Paris Hilton feels like such a call back to 1930s Hollywood, even though she wasn’t around for it. Not really a big actor or director or anything. Just a famous socialite who brushes the right shoulders and is iconic through appearance/lifestyle.
Sort of like Zsa Zsa Gabor. She was a socialite in the 1930s whose extravagant lifestyle launched her acting career. Later in life she garnered this reputation of being famous for being famous.
@Coolgamer127 Kinda rude especially when we are talking about major violations of privacy. It doesn’t matter though she would have been famous anyway. She would be like Dorris Duke. A famous socialite because she’s extremely wealthy and beautiful.
@Coolgamer127 Dude, that doesn’t even make sense. She was born insanely wealthy, why would she have ever had to do what you’re insinuating? Use your brain.
I know everyone wants to shit on her movies but her acting in house of wax was not that bad… she’s actually pretty convincing of fear or sadness and she cries well! Not a horrible actress
True that! She is not terrible, that horrified expression she makes in the scene where she's being hunted felt so real, she did an amazing job with that. I think it'd be pretty interesting to see her in more horror films
Okay, the one thing you left out of House of Wax, and this stuck with me because it's such a weird reversal or misunderstanding of tropes... Paris Hilton's character was supposed to be pregnant. Like, as I recall, a central conflict for her and her boyfriend was that she didn't want s3xytimes because she thought she was pregnant, and it resolves with him being like, "Yeah, I'm not gonna abandon you" and then they both get killed like all of that time and energy building and then resolving their conflict was spent on nothing. Also it is RARE af that a pregnant character gets killed, except to show some exceptional level of monstrosity for a villainous character. However, the villain was already presented as fairly monstrous, both due to physical deformity, and just encasing so many people in wax. It's up there with the Jurassic world scene where the secretary lady gets brutally mauled by pterosaurs and then eaten for no reason.
The Hottie and the Nottie is obviously awful, but to be fair, June should really be taking better care of herself, if not for attractiveness, then for her health. Boogers could be washed and nasty teeth can be brushed, hair could be conditioned and she should really see a doctor about the rotting toenail, toe fungus isn't a joke. The doctor could also probably help with the acne.
They had to use those "ugly" traits in order to have the girl "pretty" by the end, because if they used an actress who had traits you can't change (like bone structure, mild bow legs that you won't operate, crooked nose, size of eyes or ears etc) then they'd fail at their "transformation". It would however make for a far, far more interesting & inclusive film.
Some people have skin diseases that make it almost impossible to take care of yourself. I've had the worst acne when I was a teenager and I took great care of my skin and was on a vegan diet, so it's not like you can always look good if you take care of yourself. Of course, it's always worse if you don't take care of yourself, but there are many people that take care of themself 10 times more than you, but still look like that. Also many threatments cost a lot of money, so for example I didn't treat my acne scars until I was 22, because then I had enough money, because I was lucky enough to get a well paid job.
I love Repo cause it isn't all that talked about it and the goth and rock elements makes me love it, Anthony Stewart Head is always someone I love to see, and I wasn't expecting Paris Hilton in a film about a goth opera but honestly her presence in the film is kinda fun, I can see why people don't really like it with how like 95% of the film is music but that's fine
Damn, you've hurt my soul. Repo is my absolute favorite musical of all time. LOVE LOVE LOVE. I am a giant fan of both musicals and horror films so I guess it makes sense. And as a none Paris Hilton fan I think she did really great in it.
me too! it was the first horror movie I ever watched alone when I was like 6 or 7. for 3 years after it was the scariest thing I had ever seen, I should have started with something a bit less gorey.
Me: *sees Repo in the thumbnail* hell yes! Can't wait to see him cover this one! It's right up his alley! Over the top acting, Sci Fi, dystopian theme, lots of gore, he's gonna LOVE this one!!! Elvis: I hate this movie Me: o-oh okay...
I literally got it on dvd (bluray was either too expensive or unavailable I don't recall) for my birthday a few weeks ago. I hadn't seen it in years and thought it was a shame I didn't own this movie yet.
@@cinder7258 Lol! Oh well. Musicals aren't for everyone... The first time I watched it I might have been doing a lot yayo. So that may have contributed... I'll have to re-watch it. Maybe I'll agree with Elvis on this one after I check it out again.;)
I watched that movie when I had mix of morning sickness and the flu while pregnant with my 11 year old and that's what it reminds me of lol. Laying on the couch dying. It isn't the worst movie but that was the first time I saw it.
I was a part of the Repo! shadowcast, it was a GREAT time with sight gags and callbacks! It became a midnight movie cult following, I was a part of the San Diego cast, I played Sarah Brightman's character, Blind Mag, My ma and I made all my costumes, gathered the accessories, and it was one of the happiest year of my life, I still cosplay as Blind Mag in the Chrommagia scene.
I'll always love Repo! I know it's out there and everything is musical...but that's the point of an Opera. I've always been a fan of over the top musicals and stage shows. So much credit for a completely original idea.
Repo really is an opera and it's that operatic style I think is very fair to not be everyone's cup of tea. I studied classical singing for years and I loved this film. But I can totally see why you wouldn't and your criticisms are valid
Loved Repo when I was a teenager! Haven't seen it in ages but have played + heard remixes of it's tunes at goth/alt clubs (mostly Zydrate Anatomy). There was even a shadowplay show of it in the state I'm from (in Australia), I attended and it was pretty cool seeing it performed live in front of the actual movie. House of Wax I haven't thought about in ages!! I recall thinking it was pretty awesome.
5:20 I had a dentist claim they needed to shave down my tooth to put a cap on, and a couple years down the road, the cap came off, and just _breathing_ through my mouth hurt the nub that was left, much less chewing, or trying to drink anything that wasn't room temperature. Leaving the nubs like that isn't just ugly, it's akin to torture
Fun fact: my aunty worked in the art department 4 that wax movie and apparently when they shot the scene with the wax house burning down they actually accidentally burnt the whole set down and they had 2 completely rebuild the whole set to get the last few shots it postponed the movie by like 6 months lol
Absolutely loved repo myself. One of my all time favorite musicals. That being said i get the argument about music being bad. Some of the songs were pretty bad but on the flipside i absolutely love other half of them. There are some illogical stuff that takes you out of the immersion even by musical standards. Like the graverobber screaming when he is trying to sneak at the graveyard. But despite the bad stuff its the set design, worldbuilding and overall atmosphere of the film that makes up for all of that for me
I love repo. It's an opera and with operas not all of the music is gonna be great because they are singing throughout the entire thing, but I live a lot of the songs.
I absolutely love Repo! The Genetic Opera, but I can also absolutely understand why someone wouldn't. That said, Graverobber is extracting zydrate from the corpses of former zydrate addicts, and he yells GRAVES! to impress Shiloh. And, a bit of trivia, Hilton really really loved the project and paid out of pocket to fund and promote it. House of Wax I enjoyed too, despite it falling prey to some of the more annoying horror movie tropes. It feels like an interesting combination of the original House of Wax and a specific Twilight Zone episode (the title of which escapes me at present). The cops and relatives of the townspeople probably did find out - but didn't live to tell about it because literally everyone who goes through the town is killed and made into wax. There's a bin in the "wax works" building that is FILLED with cellphones that you see towards the end. It pretty much tells you all you need to know.
For someone type casted as the "hot one" she isn't very hot. Some of those "not girls "were more attractive then her imo. Being skinny and blonde doesn't automatically equal sexy lmao.
FUN FACT IN REPO THE GENETIC OPERA, PARIS HILTON ACTUALLY PROVIDED HER OWN CLOTHING FOR THE FILM ASWELL AS CLOTHING FOR THE EXTRAS, SINCE THEIR BUDGET WAS SO SO SO LOW SHE WAS AN ANGEL ON SET AND PEOPLE REALLY LIKED HER SHE MADE THE PERFECT AMBER SWEET AND I WOULDN’T HAVE WANTED ANYONE ELSE TO PLAY HER, THE CASTING IN REPO IS FLAWLESS I LOVE RTGO I LOVE RTGO I LOVE IT
I love how every time Repo is critiqued (or even mentioned really) an entire army of Goths appear out of thin air to defend it. It never gets old. (And by Goths I mean me. The movie is trash, but it's the kind of trash that just so happens to be my jam)
I am most definitely not a goth and I love Repo. I was introduced to it by my buddy who is also not a goth in any way. I even went to get an autograph from Terrance Zdunich. I was obsessed with this movie.

Repo the musical is bad, but that doesn’t stop me from loving it. It’s weird and different. And the stories around it getting made are fascinating. Like a lot of costumes being sourced from Paris Hilton’s own closet.
I watched part of House Of Wax, from when Wade gets incased in wax til the end, during a hospital visit for a blood clot. I feel more traumatized by that then the actual blood clot.
Repo is my FAVORITE MOVIE. One of my dogs' names is Pavi. This is BLASPHEMY. And Amber CAN'T sing that's the whole irony of her wanting to take over for Mag. All jokes, obviously you're entitled to your opinion, I just really love that movie xD
Someone needs to make a movie with both Nic Cage and Paris Hilton in it together. Both high on cocaine fighting off duck monsters or something with 1970's rock kicking off in the background. That would be hot!
Notice in the last movie how “carly” had to gruesomely rip her glued lips open but they were somehow miraculously healed by the time theres a close up when she picks up a bat 🤨 btw im not sure how innovative house of wax is, considering it was originally released in 1953 🤷🏼♀️
The only funny part about the dog and whipped cream scene is that apparently Paris’s character is so bad at oral that it’s indistinguishable from a dog licking whipped cream according to the boyfriends reaction lmao like if your partner slobs on your knob like a dog there’s a problem there
Both Repo and House of Wax have a place in my heart as bad movies that I got too attached to for no reason at all. Thank you for covering all of these!
@@Jenacide I personally wouldn’t place them under ‘good’ movies, but that’s subjective. It’s definitely iconic and a cult classic though! Like I said, I do love it a lot! To me ‘bad’ and ‘good’ are separated from ‘enjoyable’ for sure!

When Paris first came out in public people assumed she was this ditzy blonde so she rode it all the way to the bank. Of course she leaned into it you'd be crazy not too. In my opinion it says more about her intellect than anything. Then the same people that that made these assumptions were the first to start judging her. In the end though she laughed all the way to the bank. She also wasn't just your typical spoiled rich girl. Granted, she was rich, but she lived a very hard life as a teenager. I know, I went through a place similar to where she was and I'd never wish that on my worst enemy
I’m so glad Repo was covered here. I’ve seen it quite a few times, even in live musical form. I’ve also met the actors who played Luigi and Pavi, solid guys. Also I admit Repos fun but it ain’t a masterpiece, however the creator said they were going for the most outrageous musical they could think of, definitely think he achieved it !

@Coolgamer127 a millionaire daughter probably has higher standards than you lmao

She's been used to playing different personas since Simple Life, so basically she can act.
Ayy respect on the self care tho the movie was shallow but hell ya self love
They had to use those "ugly" traits in order to have the girl "pretty" by the end, because if they used an actress who had traits you can't change (like bone structure, mild bow legs that you won't operate, crooked nose, size of eyes or ears etc) then they'd fail at their "transformation". It would however make for a far, far more interesting & inclusive film.
@@Mintylight It was a Paris Hilton flick. It was never going to be inclusive. But I do see your point.
Indeed. It's one thing to be body positive, but one should never ignore they're health.
I'm surprised to see more people defending Repo, and I'm glad people enjoy it
Chase The Morning is my absolute jam
I love Repo cause it isn't all that talked about it and the goth and rock elements makes me love it, Anthony Stewart Head is always someone I love to see, and I wasn't expecting Paris Hilton in a film about a goth opera but honestly her presence in the film is kinda fun, I can see why people don't really like it with how like 95% of the film is music but that's fine

Repo the Genetic Opera is a national goddamn treasure. Paris helped with funding when the project was short on money too.
But despite the bad stuff its the set design, worldbuilding and overall atmosphere of the film that makes up for all of that for me
Repo is an underrated gem

Not gonna lie, Repo had the potential of being sci-fi masterpiece if done correctly. The setting and worldbuilding are awesomely creative.
