The beginnings of religious pieces are always insanely good, just like Requiem Aeternam from Mozart is, or the Kyrie Eleison from K.427, or the opening from the Matheus Passion.
Yup. I can pretty much ALWAYS find a piece that’s similar to another one, and the beginning stands almost completely alone from anything I’ve ever heard.
PointyTailofSatan It is indeed so beautiful, I am listening to it as I write out this comment and I can almost imagine it as a young girl frolicking through an open field while the sun sets, she harbours not a worry in the world and sings with the energy of a heart content with nothing but praise, joyful and sincere appreciation for the sacrifice of her lord. I imagine the counterpoint of the flute as birds or other objects of God’s creation which join in with her, mimicking and developing her song of praise in the most intellectual and mature way with such complicated yet such simple and beautiful contrapuntal juxtaposition. Music like this can cleanse souls.
I was lucky to perform this piece (St John) under the direction of Kurt Mazur and members of the New York Phil chamber/concerto artists. Period instruments. +romarinthym You are welcome romarinthym. Both St.John and St.Matthew passions are two completely contrasting works. St. John, however, is much more fast paced and gives up more thorough detail than St. Matthew. If asked which I favored more, I would not be able to answer. They are both beautiful in their own manner.
Indeed a difficult choice. I think the Matthew is more consistent, but a little too florid for my taste. The John is deliciously austere - especially the opening - but doesn't have the overall wealth of good stuff that the Matthew has. Imagine if he had combined the two.. :) Thanks for doing these Geru.
St John is as full of good stuff as St Matthew. From a formal, structural point of view, it could be argued that the latter takes it an extra mile in terms of squeezing the orchestral & vocal resources: 2 choirs, 2 orchestras etc. However talking strictly in terms of musical quality, it´s impossible to choose one over the other as the two are just immortal works.
Indeed. Matthews Passion concentrates on the suffering of Christ while John's Passion focusses on the necessity of the crucification as a fulfillment of the script to release mankind from their sins. Thus, John's Passion is the more "Lutheran" one. However, Simon Peter's denial of Jesus and the earthquake upon his death have been taken from the Matthew Gospel, so they must have been very important for Bach that he put them into his John's Passion.
I also believe that Bach was working on a saint mark passion i think? but it was lost to time unfortunately. i can only imagine how amazing that one would sound like also
Is it just me or are the last two quavers in the Continuo at 17:22 wrong? I'm pretty sure the orchestra plays G and F instead of E and D... Doesn't matter though. Great video! I've watched it countless times and still enjoy it. Great job!

+Strika2000 It sure is. Especially in the second part during the trial (which took loads of hours to accomplish) with all the "back and forth" dialogs between Pilate and the crowd. Very intense, very enjoyable!
+gerubach Yes; in those parts, I felt that the choir could have been more 'mad' (if you will). They are meant to represent a crowd screaming for Christ to be crucified. But then perhaps that is not in keeping with the style.
. Saluti e complimenti.
Correction: two. But Mozart died when he was just getting started. Moreover, a 1793-1798 passion by Mozart would easily eclipse anything by Bach due to orchestral forces Mozart would have at his disposal. Think "Ich folge dich..." but with full woodwind section and Mozart's matchless semitone ornaments.
@@hugoclarke3284 thinking of art in terms of theism and deity is a fruitless endeavour. There are only brains: composer's and listener's, bridged by the performers' and physical qualities of their instruments and the room. No gods involved.
@@Pawel_Malecki I think there has been some misunderstanding. This word is an adjective. I'm not commenting on the existence of divine beings, only the nature of the music iteself.

I just attended a Church Concert in Landstuhl, Germany 'Heiligefreitag Dienst' 300th anniversary first performed in Leipzig April 7th, 1724. WOW! One reason to live in Germany,
Does anyone know where to find the St. Matthew Passion video? It used to be available only on Gerubach's facebook page but now it appears to not exist anymore. TY

Moreover, a 1793-1798 passion by Mozart would easily eclipse anything by Bach due to orchestral forces Mozart would have at his disposal. Think "Ich folge dich..." but with full woodwind section and Mozart's matchless semitone ornaments.
@@Pawel_Malecki Mozart projects divinity whereas Bach encapsulates it. To try to fit them on a scale is a fruitless endeavour.
Great video! I am wondering, how did you manage to make this recording sound at A=440? all Gardiner's recordings I know of this are at 415.
I just listened to the video side-to-side with the Gardiner recording on Spotify and you are right, for some reason the uploader pitch-shifted the recording. My question isn't how, but... why?
Leogun94 Copyright?
@@daniluzzu Ah, good call.

Wow. I really must thank you for all the work you do. How many hours does it take to make a video like that?
A lot of hours, no doubt - and even more devotion.
Beyond words
Does anyone know where to find the St. Matthew Passion video? It used to be available only on Gerubach's facebook page but now it appears to not exist anymore. TY
This is amazing! I love grabbing my cello and playing along with it (or at least attempt to). Might there be a version of Saint Matthew Passion that might come out soon?
gerubach Mein teurer Heiland, laß dich fragen is my favorite because it has a Cello Solo.
Please do the St. Matthew Passion also
What a masterpiece, and a great interpretation ! Thanks a lot for sharing this wirh scores. Can you givre me the name of the orchestra and choir are playing/singing ?
Dear Bach, sometimes you feel like a glass of water or even air to breath.
Well that was quite... humbling
How do you make these videos? They're fantastic!

If anything can make me religious, it's this here.
@Paras Mento i guess so but with this specific musical accompaninemt.
I super appreciate this but gah, I cannot sight read the vocal score in C clef so unfortunately this is not exactly fun for sing-along....wish you would have used treble clef for SAT.
