As a person who has played on the wing (usually 11) my entire life I can verify that this summary is pretty accurate, though you did miss out my favourite expression in rugby "there is no substitute for pace" Iol
The modern winger is one of the most important defensive positions. Case in point, Ben Smith letting in almost every Australian try/line break in Perth. The most effective defensive tactic is the rush defence, which is led by the wingers/outside backs who look to rush up and in on the opposition.
just come across this video as im getting into uni rugby. PLEASE CAN YOU DO A VIDEO FOCUSING ON FULLBACK TACTICS AND POSTIONING ETC (GOING IN DEPTH ON THE ROLE). love the channel btw
Honestly I love this channel how is it posible it's not in the millions subcribers yet! You will be there soon as this is one of the best rugby channels on you tube. Keep going
Good video but shaquille oneal had long a prime from 1993 - 2004, which is quite long. However, his absolute prime was from 2000-2002 where in this stretch he was arguably the most dominant player in history.
He's not, but he is a good player. Bottom line is that he creates less for his team and his strike rate is lower, also he doesn't come off his wing as much.
I know its a controversial opinion but he quicker than Shane, has a better step than Shane and has at least equal vision. If you watched him last year at Toulouse you'd understand that saying "he creates less for his team" is crazy. He averages over 1.5 try assists per game, 32m per carry, 10 defenders beaten per game and a try ever 2nd game for Toulouse. I think by the end of his career, we'll be talking about Kolbe the same way we talk about Shane. Don't forget the standard of Rugby globally is far better than it was during Shanes career, its far harder to find spaces, defenses are better organized, and players are better tacklers. Look what happened to Habana during the end of his career, he pretty much because useless because even in such a short period of time, defenses improved a lot to counter those types of players. I'm not saying you're wrong, its just my opinion
Wasps have taken the 'have as many Fly Halfs on the field as possible' ethos to a new extreme recently by having 3. Jacob Umaga at 10, Jimmy Goppeth at 12 and Lima Sopoaga at 15. Seems to be working, won our last 3 games before lockdown.
This is great but I think the Shaq example is a little unfair- he had a 10 year stretch where his lowest average season PPG was 26.2, and it took until his 15th season before he ever dropped below 20, while also being effective on defense and rebounding.
Do people think its as free a position as this video says with regards to teams that rely heavily on a kick chase and for Teams that have to defend one? For me it becones a much more rigid position where placing your self is of utmost importance
Brilliant video. There's a lot to cover in a short content. But awesome. Wingers that became centres later in the careers were good like Tana. Maa Nonu shifted out wide at one point. He was fast but waste of skill.
I was talking about some of this stuff with my dad the other day. I'm curious, how would you classify Stefan Terblanche? I think he's one of the most incredibly versatile backs I've ever seen.
Lomu ran 100m in close to 10 seconds. 120kg man that can do that? Really dangerous. He wasn't just a powerful and strongman, but a paceman as well. When I think of fullbacks, I immediately think of André Joubert, Christian Cullen, Matthew Burke, and Percy Montgomery. Not many fullbacks these days that are thát consistent, brilliant or reliable. I feel Francois Steyn could have been a truly legendary fullback. But unfortunately many coaches and the "higher-ups" in South Africa didn't/don't know how to manage him.
Robinson and Williams... little guys. Missing from modern union... although not as durable as big lumps particularly useful in a late strike capacity around the 60 minutes mark, they can drill space through forwards and outpace tired backs. Just try and keep them out of frontline defence work to keep them fresh, especially for a cross field chase.
I didn't know you were allowed to record hotel lobby music and use it in a RUclips video. Learn something every day XD But the analysis was spot on, so I will not be contacting the Hotel Lobby Music Regulatory Council - no worries.
NGJ Rugby, I'm new to your channel but are you aware of Rugby Beast. He is another rugby you-tube highlight video maker I feel like if you follow his style of humor or more enthusiastic approach you will get a lot more subs. I recommend you watch one of his videos like video The art of the chase down tackle were he puts lots of extra things in to make it more interesting. Not saying your videos are boring, they are very informative but maybe just add a little more fun if you know what I mean. All in all a great video, just trying to get one of my favorite rugby channels more views.
It's funny how you use South africans in your vids but never giving them credit.... Dean Hall, Chester Williams , Brian Habana ,chestlin Kolbe, John Mametse, Ashwin Willemse South African are and still are the best even with little game time.....
Those Habana highlights bring back such wonderful memories.
The truly natural winger who fit the graph perfectly was Rupeni Caucau. Unfortunately we never got to see much of his amazing talent.
I so agree, absolute brilliant and best of all wingers ever!
As a person who has played on the wing (usually 11) my entire life I can verify that this summary is pretty accurate, though you did miss out my favourite expression in rugby "there is no substitute for pace" Iol
1000% accurate. also winger my entire life
Can you please do the role of the back row (6,7,8) i would find it really helpful
Yeah what he said
It's a good day when you wake up to a ngj video.
So glad you mentioned Andre 'Rolls Royce' Joubert!
Greatest fullback ever!!!!
Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahagagagahahahahahahahahaha
Someone mentioned greatest fullback! Yet to see any other fullback do these supernatural feats on the field! 😎ruclips.net/video/HSWq45VufaI/видео.html

Another great video. Good to see appreciation for a lot of the unseen work by the back 3. Clearly produced by someone who has played there.
How can you not mention Cheslin Kolbe when it comes to evasive players?
I like bananas
How???
who?
@@michaelshaw8697 the guy the English are still looking for
@@Andrewza1 never heard of her

2:00 that’s a Venn diagram, not a graph
No its a "circle graph"
its the thought that counts lol
@@louisg5026 it's a Venn Diagram pal
This is a lovely analysis would love to see some more data included in the narrative though
Cheslin Kolbe is a better version of Shane Williams than Shane Williams... Sips tea, grabs popcorn and gets ready for the hate
Callum Scott nah fair comment
don't choke on it.
He's not, but he is a good player. Bottom line is that he creates less for his team and his strike rate is lower, also he doesn't come off his wing as much.

How can you talk about fullback and not mentioned Christian Cullen???
Cullen, Lomu & Habana would be my picks... Sorry NGJ no room for any Englishmen (but I'm bias towards great players not also-rans)
Please do this on the front row! I would love it!!
NGJ kind of covered the front row lads in his "spine of the rugby team" video. If you haven't seen that one yet, it's pretty good.
I hope this coming season NGJ will give us some highlights at his club similar to the playoff series last year.
Great video but how can you go a video about outside backs and not mention the greatest fullback of all time Christian Cullen
That Roko step is still the best I've ever seen
amazing video - you actually remind me of a breakdancer from London named AJ 47 - similar teaching style. Thank you!
These videos are so useful thanks for the channel
You are welcome bud 💪🏽

Just love how he pushes that no.11 into the try at 0:15.

Well informative video.
Classify Jacob stockdale in the unicorn zone or not?
Finn Gunter I would but crap defender
dylan vallely see I agree although I think his defence is slowly getting better than what is started out to be
Winger fullbacks?
Willie le Roux and Jesse Kriel. Not mentioned either.
How did u not mention Cullen.
I used to be an evasive winger I stepped the whole team during practice but obviously u need to be consistent confident and in the zone
So backs are in reality forwards?
perhaps some content with the adverts
great vid again mate

Ben Smith was pretty consistent
@@merlin5420 yes he was. And brilliant with cutting a defensive line to pieces.
I play on the wing
New subscriber here
How come it seems that wingers with strong defensive traits tend to play on the right wing? Like Mike Brown when he played on the wing or Ben Smith.
Because they’re facing the other team’s #11 and you def want a strong defender there
Thank you for this video 👌
thanks bro this helped a lot

I like your vids. 8 ads for a 10 minute video is too much though.
Does the 13 need me or does the fullback need me 😂 😂😂
You would forget habanas speed it was something special
Willie Le roux, allround fullback
Can you prescribe a longevity attribute for wings?
So who is the best back three?
So good
4:40 that step is just pure filth😱
Would Jack Nowell not fit into all 3 catergories
Sbu Nkosi is going to dominate the unicorn sector
That shaq comment made 0 sense he was a dominant force 1996-2006 despite guys like Patrick ewing and hakeem battling with him
Fraser O'Rourke the best of Shaq was a really short period of time. He started to use personality rather than physicality in his later years.
How can you forget cheslin kolbe with evasiveness
Factual error: Shaq was good all the way from his rookie year ('92), all the through to at least 2006, when he was still leading the league in FG%
plz do a back row video
I've played rugby for years but been asked to play wing this year can you explain what "look for work means"
Means don't stand idle

lomu legendary steps
BEN SMITH
what about daily who is a playmaker and winger type fullback?
He's the type of fullback who should stick to outside centre/wing and no where near the full back position.
what about rieko ?
Where is Thorley
Jonah who??
Kolbe has all 3

How dare you not mention Laumape when it comes to strong wingers

cheslin kolbe
Best winger in the world Rn?
My heart feels fuzzy whenever I see Cheslin Kolbe play.
Kolbe for me.
To think we only really saw about 70-80% of Lomu's ability. Managing his kidney issues had an impact. Imagine a 100% Lomu... ooft!

Lamont always made me sick, no feet at all and he always tried to sidestep rather than using his bulk and leverage. Couldn’t hit and spin, useless...
Slow your commentary down, & breath between sentences. There is no need to chatter constantly in a monotone voice.
And also mapimpi who dominated the world cup....stop racism against Africans and just come home and leave the bears alone...
