Sgt. Mark IV made a very good interpretation of Gotcha in his level "Eye of the Storm". Because it is the spot closest to the demon portal in the end, this part of the city is being transformed into a hellish landscape faster than the rest of the earth. Yeah, he imagined the bloody and lava pits across streets as the city streets literally cracking open due to hell's influence, and explaining the abstract nature of this place as apartment blocks and offices suffering their final transformation. I've had excellent RNG one time and the Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind killed each other at the same time. Nice run, decino, see you in Nirvana, where it does not smell like teen spirit.
The layout of this map is almost dreamlike. I'm in a castle! I'm in a cave! I'm in a weird metal factory thing! Now I'm in another cave! Now the factory is in the cave with me!
I think it's terrorformed (geddit?) area of Earth since this structure is where the invasion is originating from as per the episode text. Makes sense to have the two leaders of the original invasion standing guard over the portal.
One of my favorite levels - as a kid, I loved jsut going around it with the "no monsters" option - not so much because I was scared of them, but rather beause our PC at the time was a potato with 4 MB of RAM and the game tended to crash from time to time when played with monsters. I remember I really liked the tower near the start, the beating heart on the green pedestal, and the exit portal too - felt like jumping into the sky! I didn't even imagine the engine was capable of such things.
To think that a month ago the Pumpkin man was dealing with Doom 1's E4M2, and now he is about to beat DOOM 2! Incredible progress! Thanks very much decino for showing us that epic battle at 3:06! Not surprised the Cyberdemon won! Back in 2020, I was playing Doom 2 with fast monsters, single segment and no pistol start, this map took me many attempts. Whenever I got into this room, Cyberdemon always beat the shit out of the Spiderdemon. Anyway, impressive playthrough! And the sillyness at the intermission screen is totally welcome and a nice touch as well!
I'd say it's a pillar of demon mineral that came into existence early on, and was excavated to investigate its composition. so a pillar with tunneling and rudimentary elevators carved in later as researches bore through the thing, eventually discovering the demon teleporter inside. It's also in a pool of lava, so there's an argument to be made for it being a sorta... Demon Monolith that shot up out of the earth from some sort of hell fissure.
I love these gameplays a lot, since the first game I have been aware of each one when I get from college. Keep up with the great content and quality of your videos, Decino.
That was quick :D 1:20 father John Romero created that hahaha in my opinion this is one of the most iconic Doom2 maps, because of that fight between cyberdemon and spidermama. I think Cyberdemon wins most of the time :D Love the soundtrack in this map, it's awesome
I think the stone buildings could be hell outcroppings but don't discount that the lifts could simply be representative of climbing up a hill or boulder. Like a quick vertical climb plus accommodating the gameplay first and foremost.
Nice to see that Gotcha didn't get you. As for the natural/vs demon made/vs human made, I think it's human made, but corrupted by demons as the text reads, "You are at the corrupt heart of the city, surrounded by the corpses of your enemies. You see no way to destroy the creatures' entryway through this side, so you clench your teeth and plunge through it. There must be a way to close it on the other side. What do you care if you've got to go through Hell to get to it?"
I always felt that the Spider Mastermind got gypped on this map because they're kept separated. If they can get closer together, the Spider wins a lot more often.
This map is iconic. Good and original design. Challenging but doable. Good atmosphere. Epic battle: Spider Mastermind vs Cyber Demon Amazing music (message for the archvile)
I presumed the majority of the buildings were either made by the demons, as they are next to their entryway, or if they did exist before, were reshaped to fit Hell's aesthetics. One of the best looking of the city levels, especially for exploration.
This level is just so cool. To answer your question, I think the tower and everything else here was built by humans, but then the demons came and took it over. This level is the outpost between the human world and Hell. The only drawback to your playthrough is that there are some areas of this map that you don't need to explore.

So this image is partially hallucinations, partially sci-fi earth apocalyptical nature, technology and urbanism which might be interpreted as biblical hell or Dante's hell... Why not. Since that "cave" at the first minute in featured teleporters and we humans cannot make teleporters like that, it follows that it must have been either natural or aliens.
