"They will always deal 24 damage for whatever reason. I think RNG hates me a bit" and then he takes 24 damage from a lost soul after getting the megasphere. Beautiful.
There was an "urban legend" of sorts circulating around the Doom community that the shotgun at the start of MAP21 (considering the map's name is "Nirvana") was a deliberate reference to Kurt Cobain and his unfortunate demise. However, Romero has denied this at least once - I suggested to one of my friends from the Quake Wiki (who often emailed JR with Quake-related questions) to specifically ask him about this rumor, and he replied it was just a bogus fan theory and nothing more. P.S. That missing upper texture is barely visible in vanilla Doom, so you can't really blame Sandy for missing it.
I was just wondering this. I imagine that regardless of the truth he is legally mandated to say it's false to avoid getting nuked from orbit by Courtney Love and Cobain's state.
I remember the first time I played this level and it terrified me looking at all of those medkits. I was thinking ''oh, god. Am I about to face five cyberdemons? What sort of challenge requires all of this health?'' And then you play the level and its actually so easy that 2/3 of those kits are still there by the end. There is even a Megasphere within easy reach. Its an absurd decision, frankly.
I feel like it was expected to be a central hub with tons of teleporters going off, almost like tricks and traps, but Sandy just didn't have the time to complete the map
Sandy was so savage in the 90s, he made 2 different versions of Nirvana, one of which was compatible only with the ports that are not released yet. Hopefully, he also made the same for the Downtown and removed the arrow.
I would like to know the story behind how this level ended up the way it did. My theory is that Doom II was originally going to have separate episodes and Nirvana was designed around a pistol start. Sandy put together a short level, then set it aside and focused on the larger levels he was working on. He was planning on going back and polishing it up before release, but was told it wasn't necessary. As I understand it, episode opening levels are usually finished last so they can be the most presentable and get players hooked, however, they might be started much earlier in development and used as a baseline/reference for difficulty/balancing purposes. Due to some miscommunication and/or misunderstanding, Sandy thought this would be Doom II's E3M1, and didn't get a chance to fix it before release.
@@rudestlink I think Sandy's background in Cthulu games and the working idea this was going to be a difficult game lends to that. Honestly, I think a big secret to good mapping is prepping for pistol start. If you die, you still want to be able to finish the level without a save.
Nice try Decino, we all know this level changes completely when you play on Nightmare. It even changes so much that enemies don't respawn. Too bad you didn't play on real Nigthmare😢
Finally an April that's fools us not for this map LOL! 😂It's an interesting map to start and I do like this music again from Map 03 and now for this in Nightmare is taking some time to beat! Also love your intro here as well hahaha! 😆
Well, at 0:43 all your pellets went into the void, and at 2:26 you surely entered the teleporter, only that you didn't. I think this alone makes a cool map!
This map and chasm always remind me of christmas, cus during christmas 97 or I think 98 I snuck in to play doom on my gramps pc and loaded the 5 saves to see what they were and two of them were nirvana and chasm.
I played this map today on dsda sourceport and noticed the missing texture in the ceiling too 1:30 . But it seems it's not Sandy's fault. Fired up OG Doom2 on DOSBox and it looks correct there. Loving your playthroughs btw.
when I was a kid I used to love the final room with the green slime so much, I would always warp to this level and have fun blasting all the monsters, I never even finished the level I just kept clearing that one room over and over for fun lol.
I just finished Nirvana on my nightmare playthrough today. Now I'm caught up to you! Minus all the secrets and items, i'm not insane enough to go that far, but this is the first time i ever got to the wolfenstein maps without cheating. I can't believe you did the pain elemental room without a BFG. It's weird that the radiation suits don't count as items. Why do some pickups count as items and some don't? The tiny armor bonuses are more worthy of counting to the completion tally than the hazmat suits? I finished the heavily gimped PSX doom maps with respawning monsters and even with all the nerfs there the next map gave me a lot of trouble. Good luck... to both of us. It's the map that put the chaingunner in S tier
That barf threw me off guard. I forgot you did the same joke last time, but I think this one is executed better. Now please tell me why cutting off funny sounds makes them more hilarious.

Ah, map 21 (literally, the legit one), so much is there to discuss about it, specially about the starting room. I consider it good, or just decent, the only tricky part is getting that megasphere, you have to be quick, like real quick to get it. Other than that, the rest is fine.
I know that in the Playstation trophy hunting community, there is a trend to consider MAP29 the hardest map of Doom II on Nightmare. But the trophy there requires you to do all Doom II maps on co-op Nightmare which I know is slighly different. But it will be interesting to see how you, decino, deal with MAP22 and MAP29. I might use your videos as guides for when I get to that stage. Great job with these videos thus far. Looking forward to see how this will end. :)
Regarding Nirvana, Sandy was like You Know You're Right and was All Apologies about it. He didn't mean for it to Drain You. Just Something in the Way when designing it.

Doom 2's third episode feels less like hell and more like... I honestly don't know... a sewer? It's a weird mashup of different visual themes that don't really fit together.
A final room that is made so easy by the invulnerability sphere, that you don't even need to grab the radiation suit. But then again, you're pretty much speeding through it on this mode.
Okay here go again. The good old infamous Nirvana some love it some hate it I'm one of those who actually like it, yeah call me insane or weirdo whatever, but something about the Hellish levels on Doom 2 kind of really intrigue me quite a bit unlike the city levels especially on nightmare but yet again it's just me lmao. By the way the intro video is really awesome I love it lol.
Decino, you probably have the largest collection of doom wads. Maybe you can help me remember one I once played a long time ago. I cannot remember its name but I do recall that the wad used a custom waterfall texture for lava on a map and that map in question had some epic piano music.
@@decino I wish I could. I just remember the lava falls with the white rock textures on a map with some epic piano music going on. For the life of me, I just cannot remember the name of the mega wad. Small, conscise rooms, each with a very clear purpose. No dumb mases, no degenerate switches that do something half a map across, pretty cute and tame. Yeah, maybe a bit uninspired but way-way better than the downtown abomination
That one Revenant really wanted a piece of you bad. I am very much enjoying this Nightmare run, it is going very well. Are you thinking about a possible Plutonia Nightmare run at all? P.S. Good luck, lol
@ 2:03 Decino said, "Not the Revenant." A reference to Nicholas Cage's "NO! NOT THE BEES!" xD Yeah, by the hellish Act 3 of Doom 2, the series is already suffering from Sequel Fatigue. It also happened to Inferno in Doom 1, and other games that I played like Descent 1, Commander Keen episode 3 et. al.
Such a wonderful level that it deserves two playthroughs in two days.
Damn this map changes completely different on nightmare
Yeah
Happy to be your 69th like
Yeah it feels like an extended arena. The small simplicity of the rooms make it just "you and them."
"This is map 21, *vomits*" 😂
The abrupt cut makes it even better.
I don't get it. Why hate this map?
It's the only valid reaction
If you saw the video he released before this one it makes perfect sense. Definitely confusing out of context though.
That's not vomiting... *that's Lost Soul expulsion.*
"They will always deal 24 damage for whatever reason. I think RNG hates me a bit" and then he takes 24 damage from a lost soul after getting the megasphere. Beautiful.
And the one right after that only hit for 4. Just an extra little 🖕 from the RNG

That seems way too mean-spirited for Sandy, anyway
