Karl Jobst has a great video regarding the history of speedrunning this level. Its very interesting to see the evolution from ''doing the level properly'' to ''skipping almost the entire thing.''
That wall glide is epic.
It's been so long since I played the game myself that I almost only remember Karl Jobst's video about that level. Now I am surprised how large it really is.
Wrong even the first video skips the blue key
gotta love those ledges! :)
I tend to watch that video every 2 to 3 months. That is how interesting it is.
Sandy Petersen's Magnum Opus
Very surprisingly peaceful this map, even on nightmare.
I never realized how peaceful The Chasm is. Large sections where you don't have to worry about enemies and can focus on exploration. Kind of a unique vibe
The music makes it more calm as well
Feels out of place imo, ideas are always fair game for criticism and this idea sucks. Poor execution on the gimmick.
I know nowadays is all about the combat but i think exploration is often overlooked and underrated in classic Doom. As a kid i loved to just go through the level after killing all enemies, searching for secrets and taking in the scenery along with the awesome music, it was like getting lost in another world
@@Wr41thgu4rd If you play the map with the Doom2metal midi pack you'll hear the doom ending theme with the text play instead of the original song.
@@Wr41thgu4rd nah its good
I think Sandy is underrated author. Thanks to his experimenting with map (like this, barrels or tricks and traps) we got some gimmicky and distinguishable maps. You dont need love all of his maps, but without him the OG Doom II would look more like TNT: Evilution, where more than half of levels are just boring mess unrecognizible from each other.
And btw. This map offer much more than the infamous ledges. Thanks for refreshing memory with this 100% item run.
That's the reason i don't like TNT, levels are indeed hard to distinguish, too much tech bases and large empty rooms. They really feel monotonic and also the OST definitelly is not as good as in the previous Doom I/II. Only interesting level is that egyptian one, which ironically has a missing yellow key...
@@tornado100able Yeah, I also find TNT the most forgettable out of all the classic Doom games. I played it not too long ago and yet I still remember only a few sections (Thankfully Plutonia was much more fun to play despite the difficulty).
As much as I love to hate all the ledge walking in Chasm, it's still a memorable map to me. And to be fair that was bound to happen when they made Peterson create more than half of Doom 2's levels in a relatively short time.
@@tornado100able Into The Beast's Belly clears anything on DooM 2
One of my favourite Doom 2 maps, so much exploration. It sticks out as being a very memorable level compared to those around it.
Strange, I thought I was the only one. I only hear bad things about this map.
@@ChilledfishStick I think it's mostly hated by speed runners
@@grglyzen Lol ironically I've seen many speedrunners praising this map more than the casual players, precisely because is a unique a particular challenge to complete compared to other maps.
I like it, overall i enjoy Doom 2 a lot, specially at the time it was great. Both Doom and Hell on Earth may not been absolutely perfect regarding some levels but i love them as a whole and in context they were awesome at the time (not saykng that they are not now i am in love with both of them since i was a k8d)
@@ChilledfishStick nobody likes ledge walking in older games as it feels like cheap difficulty, but outside of the narrow ledges this map is gorgeous and offers a lot more than most of the later Doom 2 maps. The exploration is relatively safe and the fights can be very difficult.
Before I forget, I want to thank you for this series. I could never get this far as a kid and would always end up level skipping. It's been great playing through this with you and 100%ing it on Hurt Me Plenty.
I'm so used to seeing this map done in around 30 seconds or so, I've forgotten there was so much more to the level
We are watching a hero's journey here... It's fascinating to go back and rewatch his past "explainer" video and see how Cino applies all that knowledge and research in this nightmare run...
I think the last room is the reason the chasm gets most of the hate. Without that last room, it wouldn't be hated as much.
Just like Mass Effect 3.
6:27 I never noticed how reminiscent this section is to the first DOOM either. You're right about that.
Also, that was a fun route. I appreciate that you never grabbed the blue key and still got 100% everything.
I always liked this map, un-ironically. I also think Sandy boy is a unsung genius.
People always fixate on the infamous thin ledges, but there is more to the Chasm than this. I've always liked the concept of a vast hi-tech factory hidden in the depths of Hell. I even imagined that this was the place where Cyberdemons and Arachnotrons were first built.
P.S. No outtakes? I feel cheated :P
B-But those thin ledges.... They don't have anything to eat down here.....
Think of the poor ledges.
I think it's an ok map but like a lot of maps in doom 2 it has this problem where like 70% of the map is basically pointless and your first experience with it is trying to guess which part of the map isn't pointless
@@doomerrasa8475 Well yeah, that's what exploration is all about. Sometimes you find rewards, but sometimes you don't - it's one of the oldest principles in gaming ;)
Could be the digestive organ of the Icon of Sin
Thin ledges is what makes people dislike this level which is why people fixate on them. I don't think they are an interesting gimmick. At the very least not interesting in original Doom engine.
I also dislike the use of damaging floors since they discourage exploration.
i loved watching speedruns of this map!
Remember, the trick is to love the thin ledges... and then they love you back by preventing you from falling ;)
@@AlexeiVoronin and then came the ledges exes. cacodemons
This one feels like a chaotic breather after Barrels o' Fun. Plus the platform raising tricks are nice to exploit. It's also a map that makes you happy that Lost Souls don't regenerate.
As a kid I used to play this map over and over again, it really was my favourite. Mostly because it looks quite different from most other maps I guess. Seeing later how much hate the map gets, it really surprised me to be honest.
Although I must admit that I never really beat this map on nightmare back in the day. Looks nice though.
I agree! Love the Chasm.
I looked away right before your little joke at the end, my heart nearly stopped lol
This is probably one of the most unique and creative levels in the game. Always one of my favorites. And another one where the music just sets the perfect tone.
And here we have everyones favorite map of them all! 🤪I bet that final area created a bridge that has a big middle finger for you all to see here! 😜What a map I say! Excellent work here deino! 👏
Wow you nailed it mate! My favourite series on RUclips, I haven't missed an episode :D Thanks Decino
This is a very fun map to watch a nightmare playthrough of. Some Doom 2 maps are over before you finished unpacking your snack, but not this one. It is long, it is unusual with bunch of cool areas and secrets. It has combat, it has exploration, it has visuals. Great video!
2:16 oooh, neat trick
3:05 now watch and learn, here's the deal!
3:06 he'll slip and slide on this [B A N A N A P E E L!]
6:32 Yep, I agree
Excellent NMrun on Chasm. This level showcased one of Doom's features. Floors that have a tiny size but still work. I'd like to think that Doom 2 was basically a exposition on what kind of levels can be designed. Concepts of thin flooring allow for "ladders", tightropes, etc.
9:37 Not gonna lie, I was rooting for the meatball in that duel. Was my favorite bit in this run.
Been awhile since I’ve seen this level played (mostly) fully and it’s really pretty cool.
Also your pretend jump in the toxic goo at the end made me jump. Didn’t know that floor raised!
Nice God bless ❤❤
congratz on doing it and not falling to your death. I though you would end up being overwhelmed in the pinky room but alas, decino learned his lesson to not underestimate pinkies in barrels o' fun :D
It's my very first time I ever see this whole map. I only this one by Speedrun and only see for what a few minutes. I didn't know this map was bigger than that. Glad to see this map has more to shown than in speedrun.
8:07 goodbye fireball
I'd say that this is Sandy's most cohesive map. It has a certain sense of flow in it that almost reminds me of Romero's style. Very fun.
1:58 I didn’t know you could do that. 10:50 very funny. 😂
literally EVERY single time my dinner gets ready new decino upload, amazin
Might have something to do with how he uploads the same time every day.
@@summersmashhit9177 yea, i know but just, its an amazing treat yknow?
Great run! Love it or hate it such an iconic map! Have personally always enjoyed it. Thanks.
Oh boy, oh boy, it's the chasm!
Lovely done, great job as always.
The way you "aah yes" in the begging of the video reminds me of a Skyrim NPC.
Wow came here 23sec after upload !!
You beat me to it...
Everyone's favourite level? Well, the Dean of Doom certainly rates it! 😁
Well done on completing it without any outtakes.
Unironically one of my favorite d2 maps.
Your skills to walk(run) over those narrow ledegs🤩
Thank you for the daily uploads Decino. You the best.
The Chasm is such a fun map, I hated it when I was a little kid but it has gone to being one of my favourite maps in the IWADS; it's just so unique and its gameplay is so different compared to the rest of the level set.
You'd like Ozonia then. It's like a whole megawad of Chasm.
I've seen so many speedruns of this map that I've already forgot half of its content. It's definitely more fun than I remember.
This is unironically my favorite doom map.
At the end I honestly thought you fell down lol. You got me with the floor.
I remember how impossible the ledges seemed back in 1995! Such a smart design. The way you keep getting teleported to the tallest red column - I always thought of that as Sandy insisting that you learn platforming (not to mention pressing Use on computer terminals)!
@2:32 WTF?
Great stuff! LOL!
🤣🤣❗
Nice run! Very over-hated map. one of my favorites, even. Also, the Chasm is a great map to do a "Rocket Man" run... you IDFA as much as you want and you uv-max 100% only using rockets. makes the lost souls on tiny ledges extra suspenseful. :)
"Tomorrow is gonna be Blood Falls, I wish you all a beautiful day" Sounds like a very weird festivity...
Anyway, GG, One of the most memorable map of Doom II. That section with respawining imps, chaingunner and hell knights is very challenging
Quite chilled out some of this map is but some dangerous caco's along the way 😮
You've really made me appreciate Doom 2's maps with this playthrough. I used to think they were mostly awful save a couple, but I'm starting to really dig some of the ideas they came up with.
Amazing play in the Chaingunner office at 7:08 btw. I dont know how you didnt take more damage but man did you make it look easy.
Yay. Chasm! My friend who just played doom2 for the first time had some special words for this map 😂
I've heard about raising the roof, but this is first time I've seen someone raise the floor!
You did amazing in the blue room with the pinkys
It's comforting knowing that even decino slips off the walkways at least once.
Even the gods of DOOM have slip-ups here and there.
Damn banana peels. Nobody is safe from their wrath.
"I really hate those bloody ledges" ~ Demonlord
Me too. On the game boy advance version the ledges are more wider than the original version of the level.
you gotta love those ledges
The speed run record of this map is epic.
4:10
...I did not know there was an entire room there and a BFG... I guess since it doesn't count as a Secret I'd never find it. You learn something new every day...
1:41 "I'm ready for more"
-Kevin McCallister
I was looking forward to this one
I like The Chasm. I don't know why, but it's have it's own atmosphere. There's a big openworld. It's have a concept of these thin ledges. Good map, thanks to Sandy.
2:12's "Yeaaahh, listen to that: Pro-Gaming skills" is definitely gonna get sampled for a breakbeat track!... or something. On a side note, your videos are the reason I now only play Doom II on UV. More fun, although I get my ass kicked all the time!
Oh hell yeah
It's fun how elaborate this map is
WOW! Those button mashing skills! Surely we see a professional here!
This map seems the originator for giant mine/underground techbase levels with little machinery and really quiet and eerie. I like it for this reason, but I wish it had more detail to stand out. Oh well, Doom II was made on a tight schedule anyway.
"I slipped on a banana peel!"
- decino 2023 -
surprisingly chill
that flashback to doom 1 was very intense
Let me just say, I am _so glad_ you decided to do a nightmare run right after you decided to go for 100% items.
The cheese on the raising floor always cracks me up. Peak early 3d shooter jank.
One of my favorite maps from Doom 2! Nice job as always, Decino!
Another chasm defender over here, great map, great atmosphere. Good to see it get some decilove
I love The Chasm, first trully modern map IMHO Especially when you consider how quickyl Sandy cranked the maps in just a few months of time
I absolutely love The Chasm, but then again I tend to prefer open-ended, non-linear level design.
Nice run....You could say it was pretty Awe-Chasm-ic.
After all these years I never knew that bfg secret!
8:05, the imp's fireball phases through the wall. Spoooooky!
This is genuinely my favorite map in Doom II. The Spirit World almost beats it, but mostly because of the midi.
As much as most of us hate this map, it’s certainly one of a handful of Doom 2 maps that were burned into my brain from childhood. It’s not the best map, but it’s certainly memorable.
I really enjoy longer maps, but thats just me. ♡
Wow, long video. I'm looking forward to lots of outtakes!
Chasm is sexy. I remember when I was a kid doing this keyboard only. Holy crap it's infinitely harder without a mouse
very fresh
I hated this map originally but over time I started to understand its brilliance. It’s certainly misunderstood like Barrels o Fun.
Sandy consciously designed Doom as a maze/puzzle game. It’s a style that didn’t go on to become a dominant style for the series, however.
the chasm. I remember this map from your pacifist video, that was batshit insane. also, i keep hearing 'dont fall lamal' instead of 'lmao' which always gets me giggling
Not a popular opinion but I've always liked this map.
What make The Chasm more tolerable in Nightmare is the fact that enemies are spread thinly throughout the level and there are lots of 3D spaces for monsters to wander around. Also because of the limitation of setting heights, the bridges throughout the chasm don't have an open lower part :(
Oh, when you reach Monster Condo, say "Hello" to Barney the Arch-vile. But please don't kill him - he have some beers for me.
I actually really like the tech area’s design with all the chain gunners. Its rare to see console surface textures act as switches too
Never been this early before lol
almost 11 minutes, what a nightmare
Never knew about raising the floor from above like that!
Me either. I always figured that was the most worthless powerup in the whole game. Because after you get it you're stuck in that hole until after it's worn off.
@@1pcfred, you can also jump on the edge of the platform without taking the invincibility.
@@mina86 can I? I'm a bit chunky for that move.
@@1pcfred, you just need to aim for its side.
@@mina86 but what if I miss? If I hit everything I aimed for I'd be a much better shot than I am.
Didn't know about the trick for getting invulnerability in such cool way.
Hello decino good job for doing DOOM 2 MAP 24 on Nightmare difficulty It's not easy with the tight edges in that MAP.
Thanks decino for giving me a like in my reply. I see your videos so thank you 🤙.
Come on decino, we all know that wasn't a banana peel...that was cacodemon dung!
Chasm? Nightmare! mode? I hope you can recover from this haunting experience 😔🙏
Weird seeing this map for more than 30 seconds.
8:28 Tomato peek a boo 🤣🤣🤣
Looking forward for monsters condo, my favorite
Finally!
