I had a similar fault in my C Class. It was the steering lock solenoid which needed to be replaced.
You are 100% right that moving the steering column might get it to disengage the steering lock but it looks like there was something else going on there as the car still wouldn't start.
You were just right to walk away with all that mould, it needs to go to a Mercedes specialist anyway but only after a proper clean.

    • @kerbsidemobilemechanic

Hey man there's a trick you can do removing I believe it's a 7.5 amp fuse it's the brown one on your cars the fuse box is on the driver side and it's reversed so that the fuse you need to pull is right in front and you also need to take out the green starting relay take off the cap so you can squeeze it and make the car start manually The process is stick the key in the ignition turn it all the way on to the run position Go to the fuse box take out that 7.5 amp brown fuse for 3 seconds put it back in then squeeze the starter solenoid it'll fire right up

Get a cheap ozone generator and run it for 20 minutes in the car. That will kill all microbes so that you can sit in it for a while while working on it.

You should see what a `clear site ` looks like with some builders customers . Often terrible jobs would get passed around subcontractors until you got some poor desperate sod to do it . Mostly sales people just selling however unsuitable the site is . Looks at conservatory sales people ... Then there are the poor plumbers under some kitchen sink a cockroach would avoid. What is it with people who never remove dog pooh from garden also and wonder why workmen trampling shit everywhere . Humans can be pretty disgusting . Forgot about the people who never ever wash ....that's another level of greasy horror . I gave up unblocking Indian restaurant fat blocked drains , you couldn't wash the smell off .

Definition of Service: "A means of enabling value co-creation by facilitating outcomes that customers want to achieve, without the customer having to manage specific costs and risks."
Focus very very hard on the word "co-creation" service goes both ways.. in order a customer gets the service they also need to do their part.. for a customer to get a phone service they need a phone. So for a customer to get their car serviced they must have a car that is safe to work on.
