Greetings from Scotland! Oh yeah, seen a few of these in my time! I've removed gearboxes where the bellhousing was full of clutch lining, like shredded wheat! 3 possibilities - 1, fair wear and tear (IF it had a huge mileage!) 2, clutch thrust bearing stuck on it's guide tube (unlikely in a fairly new car) OR simply clutch riding, causing clutch slip and a LOT of heat (like the pressure plate is cracked due to massive heat!) and I would stake my big toe - THAT caused all this damage for sure! Advise the customer to buy an automatic! 😂 You often see people sitting on a slight uphill at traffic lights are too lazy to apply handbrake so just sit slipping the clutch until light changes - SO, SO bad for the clutch!!! Use the foot brake or better still apply handbrake, it's FREE! *(Over 50 years as a fully main dealer qualified vehicle Technician)*

I'm guessing the slave cylinder could be out of adjustment, with that amount of heat it must have been slipping at motorway speeds. Maybe the clutch was worn due to the customer riding it and then it kept slipping permanently until it turned into metal goop.

We had a 1996 Ford Fiesta, the clutch was never changed, it had done 160,000 miles when it got scrapped and the original clutch was still going strong.
I had a 2002 Fiesta which I bought with 90,000 miles and original clutch. Five years later and with 140,000 miles I sold it to a friend still with the original clutch. I think Fords of that era really had durable clutches but also using them properly always helps.
I want to see a study on driving style and clutch lifetime, my mum treats clutch pedal as an on off switch nothing in between. One of her clutches lasted 38k. My Mondeo MK4 tdci is on 160k on original cluctch and it seems fine, my driving instructor 40 hrs ago always told me to hesitate slightly when letting the pedal out and always take any pressure off once gear changed.
It's always good to include the stupid problems and dumb mistakes - the stuff every person makes at some point and then curses themselves out. It keeps it raw, real and honest IMO. Great job
Thank you! This is exactly where I’m taking it. As a mechanic, we make the stupidest mistakes when repairing cars and that’s just the reality of every mechanic. Thank you! Hope I gained your sub 😁
Had a Ford 1/2 pickup towed in once. Customer said he was driving alone and it just quit going. The disc lining was just a pile if dust and debris in the bell housing. He said when it stopped on the side of the road that there was fire under the truck. That was the rubber boot on the clutch lever burning off from the heat of the flywheel. The flywheel was blue and the crankshaft flange and transmission input had some blueing also. This was about 1985 when the OEMs had added overdrive to a 3 spd trans for economy. Previous vehicles the owner had, he would shift into high gear at 80 KPH, so he was doing that with this truck. The low RPM with a 400CID engine would hammer the input shaft bearing in the transmission. When I called the Ford dealer to get a new input bearing, seal and gasket with the clutch assembly and pilot bearing, they knew whose truck I was working on. They had replaced the input bearing 4 times previously. The owner did not want to pay the core deposit on the clutch. A couple of weeks later he came in and was annoyed he was not getting it back. A few days later he was in again wanting the burned clutch to take to an insurance adjuster. He had talked the person into the idea the fire (of the boot) burning off had burned the clutch out. When he left we had a good laugh at that concept.
Great team work lads. Everyone should have a reliable team like you two to work on their vehicle. It's good to do a good job. You sleep easy and the customer sleeps easy.
Fellas, that is fine, fine work. Unbelievable amount of very skilled labour required for that clutch. Great job, carried out responsibly with great care and (almost unbelievably) with humour. 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
One key point on a clutch with organic facings, like this one. As the temperature increases the friction coefficient is reduced, the higher the temperature gets the less able the facing is to recover the original fruction coefficient, basically it's a spiral of decline, heat is your enemy. I used to be M.D. of a Luk factory.
Great video. I have seen and heard drivers who ride or overuse the clutch, as you have described. Some people learn through their pockets. Well done on fixing the car.

Why do people still clutch ride? Back in the early eighties when I first started driving there was no auto hold/brake on any of the cars so on a hill I used to slip the clutch waiting for the traffic to pass, but not for very long. Also, I used to use the clutch to slow the car down when approaching the roundabout. Despite all that I have never destroyed a clutch. This is something else.
Excellent video. And i really appreciate the way you're not effing and blinding all the way through it as many do! Have just replaced the alternator on a Cooper s i know just how hard these cars can be to work on. Nice job!

When he ask3d what happened I panicked and mumbled somth9ng about a pothole

It gives better perspective on how we do the job and also shows the struggles etc… In my opinion, showing it like this prevents customers from saying to their mechanics that it can be done in ‘15 minutes’ 😂
It's possible the customer isn't actually lying about riding the clutch, if the clutch was starting to slip and the customer continued to drive the car the clutch would get extremely hot, probably more so than riding the clutch, I've seen ring gears fall off the flywheel due to the heat generated by a slipping clutch (they tend to be an interference fit and are heated to get them on the flywheel (or the flywheel is chilled) once they return to normal temperature they won't come apart(without heating) outcome is the same excess heat causing further damage
I forgot to mention, for whatever reason, there’s a pedal extension installed 🤔 But yes, I do not deny this; it could have happened. We can only guess really 🧐

Gentlemen please get something stacked under the car as an emergency back up, perhaps a couple of old wheels and tyres, in case it falls of the stands.

Good practice in repairs this deep, reconnect as minimal as possible to check functionality before reassembly. It's just not worth putting the entire car back together just to find the clutch doesn't engage or disengage for whatever reason. Doesn't matter if you are a do it yourselfer or a master mechanic.
@gregshearer423 that's bad buts let's be fair DMFs are the spawns of Satan. My old citroen (now project car while I wait for bits) one is knocking at 220k miles but what's worse is my parents DV6 3008 in which the DMF went at just 60k miles. 32 to wreck a clutch tho is bad, my first car had its original clutch when I got it at 60k miles and another 40 was put on it after that. People just can't help themselves but drive shit😂

My girlfriends uncle kept going through clutches at an alarming rate. We had a ride home from him one day and I was in the passenger side. We discussed his multiple clutch replacements and right away I noticed that he always rested his foot on the clutch pedal when driving! Wow.
Imagine the smell of that burning clutch every time she sat there riding it. Hopefully she knows now not to do that any more. You guys are great, I wish I had the mechanical knowledge (and courage) to tackle a job like this.
Reminds me of changing my clutch, slave cylinder with throw-out bearing and the flywheel in a 2008 Nissan Versa hatchback. Since mine was a first generation with a 6 speed manual gearbox I had to remove the engine and transmission as one unit. There was not enough room between the unibody to separate the engine from the trans while they were still in the car. After I realized why all the shops wanted so much money to do the job. Luckily I just so happen to have a vehicle lift in my garage left over from my kid's high school and college days when I had to work on their cars so I tackled it myself instead. ;-)
Very entertaining and informative Guy's.. I changed loads of clutches on original BMC/BL Mini's, but never seen one of these BMW types. To do that job without a four post lift and outdoors was a great achievement. Nice to see the process from diagnosis to finished job. I'm still trying to work out how the owner managed to take the clutch to that unbelievable state without some prior warning being noticed..
I'm at 9:25 and looking at the crap that fell out when you removed the starter motor I would say the clutch plate has fell to bits, it no longer has all the friction material attached to it. let's see what happens.
Stiff pedal and grinding noises are normally a worn out clutch. The mileage would be a good indicator of this. Why the pedal gets heavy is because you have to push the pressure plate beyond the full extent of its springs. The grinding is the thrust bearing worn out likely trying to push those springs.
I'm guessing by the position of the seat she wasn't fully depressing the clutch. And I was surprised that the pivot wasn't sold as a complete case. Job well done lads.
Brilliant to watch I’m no mechanic. But it’s great to see experts working so well. I personally will take my care and motorbikes to the expert s like you
Reminds me of dropping engines and gearboxes on house bricks and car jacks! I always had the attitude i was in a desert and needed to fix the car and others were relying on me to fix it.
Does the hand brake work? Those are stretch bolts around the clutch plate thats why they are +90 They use the exact same bolts on the bottom pulley (at least on the older R56). Always replace these with new (expensive) bolts. I changed the timing chain and the bottom pulley bolts did not tighten well because i used the old ones. Then after 2000km it came loose making a horrible noise. By the time i worked it out the bolts were half eaten through. This meant they snapped off and after spending 2 hours trying to extract them i gave up. I ended up welding the bottom pullet to the bottom sprocket. works fine. lol
Greetings from across the pond! I rarely have the opportunity to drive a manual transmission passenger car. But when I do, I never ride the clutch. I ride motorcycles and try to use the clutch as least amount as possible. I enjoyed your video.

IN 1977 AT 17 YEARS OLD,I BUILT A 68 CHEVELLE SS396 with the square port racing heads etc.... an old race mechanic helped me put it together. i purchased a (zoom) brand off the shelf clutch. first time i drove it to town i had to be dragged home on the back of a wrecker. seems that when the clutch pedal was to the floor, there was still some friction , and then as i was going down the road in 4th gear and it would get sideways, that clutch just didnt have enough grip. yanked that garbage out and installed the one the previous owner had built by a clutch guy (Duglas Zahn, Arkansas brake and cutch) . previous owner quit building the car because of a divorce, but was an engineer and traded the entire factory engine for a set of square port racing heads with 3 springs to each valve. we also modified the throw on the clutch arm to increase.its movement. this new clutch was much stiffer and made my leg shake to keep it depressed, but it never failed like the ONE NIGHT STAND CLUTCH DID! by the way, im married to steffy, im NOT a girl!!lol youtube buffering lots of the videos i watch now, some wont even play more than 2 minutes and thats it!

There's an easy remedy for the owner to avoid this in the future. Trade the manual car in for one with an automatic. Easy, peasy and done.
Hi guys
I didn't realise how much agro the the clutch on the mini. You really have done a great job. You mentioned the book time is 7 hours. It sounds like quite an expensive job. Very impressed how you solve problems. Well done to both for your perseverance.
Brian
Gentlemen please get something stacked under the car as an emergency back up, perhaps a couple of old wheels and tyres, in case it falls of the stands.
Always pays to put the wheels under the car , they do have it on stands though as well as the jack
At least they used proper stands, I see people working under a hydraulic jack with NOTHING else supporting! Crazy!
Cars do not fall from jack stands.
@@thevictim2072 Really? Is that so? You must be quite young! My fellow apprentice 16yo, was crushed by a transit van which was accidentally started while in gear and it jumped forwards off the stands, crushing his head. Thanks for bringing back that memory for me. Believe me, it happens!
@@thevictim2072 Really
Great job. I always use a stethoscope at work to check for clicking on pdc sensors. Noce quick way to test them
Well done guys you really know your stuff…! Love watching your videos and seeing what it takes to fix problems…’ great channel ❤
Thank you!
Great video content. Love the fact you show mistakes and admitting said mistakes helps others to hopefully not make them.
Honestly nothing ever seems to be an issue with these two, superb mechanics
Thank you mate!
Good practice in repairs this deep, reconnect as minimal as possible to check functionality before reassembly. It's just not worth putting the entire car back together just to find the clutch doesn't engage or disengage for whatever reason. Doesn't matter if you are a do it yourselfer or a master mechanic.
Fucking hell 17 reg, 56k miles and like that. Jesus
Just done a 69 plate Nissan 32k miles slaves cylinder burst and dual mass fly wheel was wrecked as well
@gregshearer423 that's bad buts let's be fair DMFs are the spawns of Satan.
My god clocked tf out!🤷👹👎🤷🙈💀💀🤔😬😬😬😬👎👎
@@woodant1981 aw complete agree about DMF and aye some people should really just go buy automatics 😂😂
Im sure they are meant to last longer than 56k miles haha dont know how its so hard to not ride the clutch just move ur foot away from the pedal
I'm so glad my father taught me from an early age working on cars I've done a few clutch changes and never seen anything that bad
Lying the act of deception, hope you charged him the proper money to fix it. I do not like Liars. Nothing worse than a Liar. You two in my opinion are very honest.
Done and dusted. Charged appropriately… unfortunately more expensive than usual because of all the stuff that’s been damaged
@@themarvelousvlog How much? 1k?
@@robevans8625My guess is £1500.

You get my vote. Great job done, and great to see in so much detail just what goes into the repair. Thumbs up guys.
Who in their right mind would buy a Mini? You were lucky with the Weather! 👍
I love minis, mainly the R53. Beautiful piece of go kart. People just needs to learn how to take care of their stuff
@@themarvelousvlogengines are crap tho, once it goes 100k, it’s finished
Chrysler engines are good but the ones in the r56 🤮
Mrs has one, it's like a go cart, fun to drive but maintaining it is a nightmare.
Requires a lot mate
Hi Lucy nice to meet you in the Roman restaurant me and my wife was talking to you saying we had never seen you before in Benidorm, I did not realise what work and camera work you put into each video, hope to see you again it was nice to see ourselves on the video ,keep up the good work take care Allan and Noreen from Doncaster
Dem a clutch rider !!!!! 😂😂😂
At 28:09 the drivers side window looks like it has a gap between it and the rear window.
Ladies....don't ride the clutch.
I’m not allowed to gender shame- I will get cancelled but yeah, I’ve worked on more clutches with lady owners
one lady owner😂🤣
My girlfriends uncle kept going through clutches at an alarming rate. We had a ride home from him one day and I was in the passenger side. We discussed his multiple clutch replacements and right away I noticed that he always rested his foot on the clutch pedal when driving! Wow.
@@themarvelousvlog LOL
And Gentlemen 😅
Great attitude and commitment to service.
Didn’t realise you were professional I thought you was a cowboy firm
Cowboys that turned professional 🤠 😂
Yeehaw
Imagine the smell of that burning clutch every time she sat there riding it. Hopefully she knows now not to do that any more.
You guys are great, I wish I had the mechanical knowledge (and courage) to tackle a job like this.
Clutch has been granny graped.
Luckily I just so happen to have a vehicle lift in my garage left over from my kid's high school and college days when I had to work on their cars so I tackled it myself instead. ;-)
I think you're being harsh calling her a liar.
I'd never say that about a customer.
Think about it.
So don't tell the truth? Isn't that lying?
The truth can be harsh from time to time… I know what you’re saying though
Lovely video! You guys so genuine. Good luck! Will be looking for more videos from you!
She probably ignored the lovely scent in her cabin 😂

Great pair of guys, he'll of a characters, I would trust more than the local garages around where I am. Keep up the good work and making us laugh.
A 2017 mini and its broken in such a way already, I think ill keep my 2005 cooper S R52.
Think you two guys are gonna have your own TV show one day... Love you vid, was going to get a Mini and you were very informative.. Great work...
I admire your good attitudes, perseverance and refusal to despair with frustrating jobs like this. Good learning experience for you and for us!
We will keep pushing content like this. Thank you!
I'm guessing by the position of the seat she wasn't fully depressing the clutch. And I was surprised that the pivot wasn't sold as a complete case. Job well done lads.
Brilliant to watch I’m no mechanic. But it’s great to see experts working so well. I personally will take my care and motorbikes to the expert s like you
Thank you 😁
Reminds me of dropping engines and gearboxes on house bricks and car jacks!
I ended up welding the bottom pullet to the bottom sprocket. works fine. lol
DAMN! They definitely like keeping that foot on the clutch pedal! That clutch was impressively jacked!
Greetings from across the pond! I rarely have the opportunity to drive a manual transmission passenger car. But when I do, I never ride the clutch. I ride motorcycles and try to use the clutch as least amount as possible. I enjoyed your video.
Yeah impressed few minor mistakes but if you've not done that car before hats off you made it look easy concideting you spend half your time on your back.
Another great video. I love how you demystify the workings of a car.
We try our best’ thank you!
Mobile mechanics are a different breed. Having to do stuff like this on a driveway or roadside! I wouldn't like to do that job in my workshop.
Guys well done, that is the most trashed clutch I have ever seen.
Please add another support under the car just in case . I know someone who had a Ford crush them as jacki g point was rotten. Love your honest videos
This is why I’m seeing soo many BMW minis for sale at very cheap prices. Great work guys 👍🏻

i had to change that clucth release bearing on my old 205 had to put 2 gearbox in the 5yrs I had it good times great vids guys you got my SUB
Nice video that is clutch riding that’s why lots of dealers recommend elderly people to by automatic my son used to work for Toyota dealers and some elderly people go through 3 clutch in couple of years especially Lady’s
2 good honest mechanics
I like the new Mini but after seeing that clutch change I’ll never buy one!
Had the original Mini and changing the clutch was simple!
My son changed one without dropping the motor, quite an achievement I think.
Thanks guys love your clips
Clutches overheating are a common fault on minis
IN 1977 AT 17 YEARS OLD,I BUILT A 68 CHEVELLE SS396 with the square port racing heads etc.... an old race mechanic helped me put it together. i purchased a (zoom) brand off the shelf clutch. first time i drove it to town i had to be dragged home on the back of a wrecker. seems that when the clutch pedal was to the floor, there was still some friction , and then as i was going down the road in 4th gear and it would get sideways, that clutch just didnt have enough grip.
yanked that garbage out and installed the one the previous owner had built by a clutch guy (Duglas Zahn, Arkansas brake and cutch) . previous owner quit building the car because of a divorce, but was an engineer and traded the entire factory engine for a set of square port racing heads with 3 springs to each valve. we also modified the throw on the clutch arm to increase.its movement. this new clutch was much stiffer and made my leg shake to keep it depressed, but it never failed like the ONE NIGHT STAND CLUTCH DID!
by the way, im married to steffy, im NOT a girl!!lol
youtube buffering lots of the videos i watch now, some wont even play more than 2 minutes and thats it!
Massive thumbs up boys weldone . We like to see more
Where did you guys get to train and become mechanics ? you have great knowledge and ethusiasm well done...
Well done guys , perseverance always pays off.
Guys massive shoutout to you, I can remember in my younger years doing these kind a jobs in front of my parents house and I was always broken the next day! What I was wondering though is what do you do when it starts raining while everything is taken apart especially the wiring and connectors are very prone to faults if water or moisture gets in there!
