    Modern M112 and M113 3 valve motors have proven extremely durable in our household, we have seen well over 300K miles on the V6’s with out ever taking the heads off! Thanks for the info Pierre 👍🏼

    The 500 SEC that I just purchased had an engine rebuild at a cost of 10 grand a decade ago. They sourced an engine and the paperwork on the rebuild is loooooong. :)

    Love ALL of your videos, but this one ranks very high in my book because you point out some very important things about rebuilding MB engines - all very true. Following all of the specs. from a TDM guide is crucial when it comes to rebuilding these engines to get a good end result - procedures, torques, hygiene, sequence, etc.
    As an MB tech of over 4 decades, I can tell you that I wholeheartedly agree with you on that specific segment about using MB or German (WAHL) pistons. Just as I would never attempt to put a German piston in my 1988 F250 Ford which has an International 7.3 liter diesel engine, I would never even remotely dream about putting a JE or Wesco piston in my OM617 in my W123 or in my M117 engine in my R107. So, your advise is spot on ! No, you are definitely no elitist snob. It is what it is. Right? Anyone who thinks you are an elitist is simply a hack or a sloppy mechanic.

    This was a dilemma that I had with my 560 sel. The headgasket was leaking badly and the job, parts and head work, was going to be 3k .that's if I do all other labor and such. I have a low milage engine that looks and tests very very well. Bought that and a rebuilt transmission for only 1500. I will reseal all of the trouble spots and replace all rubber bits. As for the old engine, I plan to rebuild it as a euro high comp for an eventual sec or sl build.

    Danke Mr Hedary. I am a big, big fan of Mercedes Benz and have owned some of the old classics of the chrome era. When I was in the Gulf (Dubai not the US) parts for Mercedes were very cheap generally. WAHL pistons were pricey and a few electric items like the distributor. All in all it was a good motoring experience.
    The big V8 4.5 liter engine I think is one of the best engines ever.

      yes, engine parts used to be dirt cheap....with a 4.5 in Dubai, I guess there was plenty of gas to feed it!

    • @mohabatkhanmalak1161
      @mohabatkhanmalak1161 6 лет назад +1

      I left Dubai in 2001, and gas was cheaper than water. I did a fuel test run between my sisters Honda Prelude which had a 1.5 liter engine
      and my 450SEL with the 4.5 liter over the same distance of 22 Km round trip for three days each car, and the results were the same amount of fuel consumption by both cars!
      Later, the engine needed a rebuild and I carried this out with the help of my then retired dad who was a master mechanic. Everything was good or needed light machining, and we only installed new rings, bearings, timing chain the usual wear items.
      Over the years I have driven a number of vehicles and to me the Mercedes Benz experience is exceptional.

    Another thing you should replace or at least make sure is in perfect working order are the fuel injectors. Bad injectors can and will destroy an engine slowly and unfortunately, many mechanics rebuild an engine but pay no attention at all to the fuel injection system, especially on diesels. If you are going to do something, do it right or don’t bother.

    Informative and scary at the same time. Most of these quality rebuilds may cost more than the entire car may be worth, or could be bought for!

    • @thisisnightshop2037

      If somebody is paying $30,000 out there for a CLA, then there is definitely more value in rebuilding the engine on your older diesel.

    • @azmike3572
      @azmike3572 6 лет назад

      Very true. A quality rebuild is always worth it, even if its cost is more than the Mercedes' value, because it allows it to go another 300,000 miles or more.

      I think the cost usually ends up between 5,000 and 8,000 for the engine alone but if something bad happened, it is usually more.

    • @mercedesclassicswithpierre1753

      @@Chuckyd26 of course...these are not inexpensive engines to rebuild, but most of the time the same parts are in need of repair- valve guides and valve, rockers, pistons and bottom end bearings, and timing chain and timing gears. Sometimes a quick search on ebay for new old stock parts can save some money but you need to know mercedes list prices before you buy!

    • @Chuckyd26
      @Chuckyd26 5 лет назад

      Thanks for the tip. Will keep it in mind! Just another quick question, I drove a friends 280S manual, he had the engine done, I also own a 280S manual and his feels much more powerful, my 280s has been well maintained, he has electronic ignition and mine standard, not sure if that can make such a big difference in power, my question is, will a engine rebuild on my 250s give it much better performance? I currently have bad compression on one of the cylinders.

  • @chaddirks5822
    @chaddirks5822 6 лет назад

    So by saying older 6 cylinder engines I’m assuming that would apply to my 1959 220S? It doesn’t run well and smokes a lot at this time. So I’m not sure what I’m all in for yet!🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @mercedesclassicswithpierre1753
      @mercedesclassicswithpierre1753  6 лет назад

      yes Chad, that's right...the M180...how is your oil pressure?

    • @chaddirks5822
      @chaddirks5822 6 лет назад

      Well the little bit I’ve got it to run the oil pressure is high. Even cranking the engine the oil pressure needle rises quite high. I had a local mechanic check the compression and it was reading low. He researched the compression specs for that engine before he checked it. He thought that maybe once running and the rings became good and lubricated the compression will improve. Thanks for your reply!

      We just did it on her 560sl. I also did it on my 280 SE 4.5. Pistons were fine, liners are fine but I decided to install new piston rings and bearings to be on the safe side. The main thing is though that if you don't have the right tools, the technical data manual end at least some previous experience, it's better to leave a running engine alone

      you should be repairing the original engine. This is the wrong question to ask about on this channel. If you can;t afford to fix the car, sell it to someone who can instead of ruining a beautiful car.
