I bought a Mahle filter, made in China! After 5,000 miles I opened it, very good quality, had done a great job. China will build to the specification given.
FWIW, you can buy genuine MB oil filters on ebay for about the same price as an after market. There is a reason the filter on an MB has a mesh around the media. If you have ever taken a filter after use and inspected it that didnt have the mesh it usually will be quite distorted due to the pressure. Also, another reason to do your own oil change is changing the rubber gaskets. FYI, these rarely get done in many shops is my experience... sad but true.
MANN+HUMMEL has announced it will acquire Bosch’s 50 percent stake in the joint venture Purolator Filters NA LLC. This was in January 2013. A Purolator might be a reboxed Mann filter in some applications. Maybe some of your other viewers can chime in.
Generally easy and rewarding work to do... it's not hard to get hold of the right filters, order extras and keep a spare or two of each in stock so they're there when you need them.
On some quality power steering reservoir filters, there could be a burr on the outside edge. These would then scrape off filings from the softer alloy reservoir housing, as the filter is set down to the bottom of the reservoir. I can just speak for myself and what I do - I de-burred them with a small file, finegrit paper and cleaned. I also like to de-burr any ridges on the lift pump in-line fuel filter, stemming from when the plastic was moulded together - just on the connections for the rubber fuel line.
Not all the filters mentioned will come with the rubbers for the nozzle portion of the filter housing on the diesels, the two small o rings. Be aware that on OM 606 and later engines you might have to source those separately from MB. I think that the side/rear mounted filter housings might carry over to the gas versions too. I just can't recall at the moment.
I found out myself that not all filters are created equal. I had a cheap and an “expensive” oil filter and the cheap one was way lighter than the expensive one. It was also showing signs of surface rust, it wasn’t as well built overall and inside it looked way thinner than the more expensive one. Lastly, the cheap filter didn’t include the proper o-ring for the oil filter housing cap. However, it doesn’t matter if the filter is cheap or not, I usually have to clean them prior to installation because although they are packed in plastic bag, they are always dusty and I don’t want dust inside the engine.
Yeah I've always been suspect of Bosch filters at the chain stores, like it's made to their spec so I don't use them. Like the John Deere lawnmower at home Depot is a little different than the same model at a Deere dealer.
I'm suspect on the Bosch filters at chain stores, I feel as if it's like the John Deere lawnmower that's different meaning better from a dealer but is the same model number. Other than that ,I thought any of the euro OEM supplier filters are way better than some junk fram. When I rebuilt a VW TDI a few years ago, I actually went to the dealer and got a 16$ oil filter because you don't gamble 10$ on 6000$. I won't skimp on filters,I just want the best.
For a while in advance ,they had a line called Deutsche or deutze, something like that. Open the box and it was a Hengst, that was for a VW vr6 application.
As always great video. What is your view on Bosch? Also, you can break this down to good a d bad filters for oil, gas/diesel filters, cabin and engine filters and so on. You could have a little bit of a video series.
So, you would NOT recommend MANN filters? That wasn't clear. Also, good luck telling people "don't be lazy!" ive been trying to do the same for years, and it never seems to sink in!
Micron pleets test showed Bosch is the best you can buy! They have internal channels that filter the oil better and last longer provides better oil flow for longer time. Also last longer before falling apart. Second is mann and OEM.
This guys is a family man and a heck of a good guy let's all donate to the man !
This is the great stuff, the stuff someone like me needs to know.
I use Mann all the time, in fact, I buy them in bulk.....a lot cheaper than replacing a whole engine

Love your shows!
Pierre, Thank you for sharing your insights. It is very appreciated!

Nice tips. 👍
Just use OE MB. Looks better with the Star on there and they're nearly the same price!
How do you feel about Wix/Napa Gold filters? They've been my go-to for a long time. Really appreciate your insight!
and don't forget Purflux, often MB branded
Oh and the kinds of filters like fleece and paper.

I've found made in usa purolators. Wix air filters are sometimes mann also.

Bosch is presumably good? I noticed that Bosch no longer seem to make power steering pump filters, so it seems only Febi Bilstein that make them.
What about Fleetguard? I know they are Cummins in house, but I have an account with them
What about oil brands? Do liqui Molly the best for our classics? If so which one because they have different ones in the brand
Hi peirre wrong video I know I'm commenting on but forgot to ask what's your take on fuchs oil ? Currently running it in my w202 with an m111 10w40
How often should you change the manual transmission fluid on an M130 engine?
What about Bosch filters? They have the name but I think they’re made of Chinesium. Mann this is a good video.😬
Wix filter???
In the aircraft realm, we cut open filters and examine for metal. Anyone?
Used to use mann, nowadays I'm using knecht
So, you would NOT recommend MANN filters? That wasn't clear.

Pierre you didn’t mention Bosch filters ?

I just get my engine and steering oil filters from Mercedes. They're so cheap, there seems to be no point looking elsewhere.
Fram's garbage
