At 17 in 1976 I bought a 62 300SE from a guy for $900. He cried because he didn’t want to sell. It needed rear air springs and rust repair. Owned and maintained that car for over 20 years. Now I want another but the next generation not the fintail.

I found our 380SL on an obscure Craigslist post in a town two ferry boat trips away. Ended up with a wonderful example of an SL with under 100K miles and in excellent condition for $7,000 US. I put $2,000 into her and she is my daily driver. So happy with our purchase that was not off BAT.

I think buying a classic car within a car club is an option. The owners of the cars understand their true value of the car and the value of the maintenance/repair cost that have been done on the cars. You can also put the word out that your looking for a specific car or meet the people with the same car your desire.

Pierre got me to revisit my passion for Mercedes-Benz. I ended up with two 1979 W123s, a 1986 R107, and a 1987 W126. Two of them were from the same estate. None are show-quality, but all four are a joy to own, drive, and work on. They all need work. They are all "unfinished projects." The joy is in the hunt and the fun in making them roadworthy as a daily...

      Why 1986 r107? Why 1986?

@@inimix That's just what I found. It had sat for 3 years. The tires were dry-rotted, but there was no rust, and we could get it to run. So far, it has new brakes, tires, and front suspension. I did some and got some help with others.

I bought a 1981 Mercedes-Benz 240d about 10 years ago because of the quality of the car. I did the same thing with a 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis LS because of how well built they are. And I have a 1964 Ford F250 Truck that I purchased in 1980. This is a 60 year old truck that will also continue to last.

As a 560sl owner I can confirm this. Even perfect condition car may need at least 10k on it. Tensioner, guides, pumps, injectors, EHA valve, not to mention radiator that no longer exist aftermarket.... costs just rise and rise.... and I do a lot of work myself, take in account very little labour costs.

When my wife and I had been dating about a year she asked me what my ideal "mom mobile" was. I told her a S124. That got me looking at wagons on the internet, and realizing I'm not going to just buy on of these. They're ether to cheap and to much of a project, or BAT levels of expensive and not project at all. About 2 years later I'm at the local Pick N Pull junk yard to get parts for my W126 and in the lobby they have a beautiful S124, The interior and exterior where 9/10, the B pillar trim was de-laminating and the rear hatch was opened into something and had a small dent. Why was this car at the junk yard? who cares I bought it for less then $2k. That was 2018. Turns out it had a blown head gasket. I obsessively fixed and cleaned every inch of that car, now have a car anyone would love to buy on BAT. And I didn't even look for it. I just knew what I wanted and waited. I got to take the car to the Carmudgeon Show's Bruno Sacco Birthday party last year. What a day at the junk yard HAhahah.

As Pierre knows, I love unfinished project cars. I love the satisfaction in doing the work myself. 😊

Your personal goals have to come into play.
I don't buy cars to make money. Ive spent just as much paying someone to do work as I have invested my own time and parts. Im much more concerned with enjoying my car than I am trying to maximize the return on the investment. The enjoyment is the return.

That’s so true, once I assumed that a friend of my older brothers would never part with his 1969 Mach1, years passed and I got to know an old guy who souls Christmas trees in our area, we got chatting about cars and he said that I would probably like one of the cars in his garage. I bit, and he opened up the garage door and I just about died, here was my brothers friends Mach, and then when he told me what he paid for it I wanted to cry☹️

Don’t cry! My mom literally gave away our 1972 LeMans sport and I sold my mint 1984 Supra for $2,000 in the mid 90’s.

I always enjoy your videos, and my endorsement is more qualified than most: I'm a retired dealer who's owned 8 6.3s and a lightweight Gullwing. Sold the Gullwing privately a long time ago for what at the time a world record price...now a nice standard car is selling for notably more than I got for my lightweight! You'd love my current (and last, as I'm 86 now and not buyng/selling cars any more...and my only daughter has vowed never to sell it) 6.3; it's a '71 with the drivetrain of a '69 and a custom-made Latham Axial Flow supercharger with 2 45 DCOE Webers and AMG experimental 3-valve heads. Everything else has been beefed to AMG Pig standards and Wilwood brakes added. Still rides on XWXs and standard-looking steel wheels (7s in the front, 9s in the back). Makes just over 500bhp at the rear wheels, and makes Ferrari owners rub their eyes in disbelief. God I hate newer Ferrari owners...and I actually own 2 old ones, a 330 GTC and a 330 2+2 with bespoke front nose (looks more like a Superfast, and was custom-made at the factory, not some botch-up garage job). Keep the faith...

I discovered my 85 w123 and paid way too much for it. But it was turn key and about as mint as you can get. Not a crack in the dash or any rust.

If you buy the car at the right price and its selling on the market much higher then its justified to spend some money to bring it up to standard. But its a problem to pay top dollar and then spend more on top to get the car right. I've been lucky so far. I'm a very cautious car guy. I like to think things through. I've lost out on a few nice cars because I've hesitated.

I pestered the previous owner of my 6.9 for 3+ years to sell the car to me. Now that its mechanical restoration is well underway (with many hurdles), my friends ask when I’m going to sell it. If I wanted to sell the car, why would I try for years to buy it in the first place? This is the internet auction buyer mentality.
I think the car flipper world sees cars as only a way to make or store money. If you don’t love it; it’s just like any other junk ware commodity item - fast moving consumer goods.
A product that can be repaired 30, 40, 50+ years after it was made is completely in opposition to modern consumerism which is why people are puzzled when they buy a “fully sorted” car and need to do a lot of work on it and unfortunately, that costs money and time. Finding those guys with rare parts that aren’t going to extort you because you’re just as passionate as them, building friendships over the world, sharing information and resources to continue the existence of the specialist knowledge required to keep these cars running. You can’t fake that. You actually need to care, almost to an obsessive level.
