All my friends were Mexicans they liked the same stuff as me we all wore boots listened to country music and drank Budweiser and we got along ... We focused on what we had in common and we all became friends I had a lot of black friends too I grew up listening Georgia legends like Ray Charles and Otis Redding and I loved me some good fried chicken I ate what they ate I listened to what they listened to Ironically I didn't like most of the white people in California very much they didn't season their food where overly healthy and looked down on my for my accent they listened to pop music and thought I was a hick because of my boots so I had very few white friends out there ... I always thought that was funny because I know people don't expect it from me when they see me

Went to see John in 1972...people made fun of me for going. Concert had poor attendance. So happy I went...ended up in 3rd row by John's invite! Fun concert!

Haven't heard this song in years. I loved it as a kid. Listening to the lyrics now I realize how much these lyrics apply to my life.

Riverreed Ward lucky you.

Daniel OG LOC Lister if you think about it it's not just about playing a fiddle the song can be interpreted as living a simple fulfilling life. Just know what you want, get what you need, find a job you enjoy, and be happy. It comes in many forms.
I hear ya. I spent 3 weeks stuck in Brooklyn recently and I was so happy to finally be back home in the suburbs and see green again that this song got stuck in my head, and I performed this song at open mic with my guitar last night. And the crowd loved it! Thank God Almighty I’m home again! Woohoo!
There is something magical about dirt and farmland 🌽 and sun ☀️, so thankful I grew up in gods country in rural Idaho 🥔

Funny thing, i live in brazil, that type of music isn't even popular around here, but i just love it, recently i've been listening to all John Denver and Hank Williams stuff, nice music! 🇺🇸🇧🇷
pure and flat out live also! I was so very blessed to have seen him live twice. The first time was in 75 when I was 14. He held 10,000 people in the palm of his hand. When he said "clap ur hands" and went into "well life on the farm is kinda laid back" that place just lit up! Five years later john did the same thing.. Just a amazing performance both times..
Wow! I can only imagine. You've been blessed!

John Denver was such a great writer. Lots of storytelling in his music.
This was written by John Martin Sommers.

Most country people have great stories!!!! And they are true!!!!!
Why can't we have music like this today? John Denver will always be missed.
music was taken over in the 90's.. i think
This song causes big grin on my face every time I play it while driving on UK roads, hopefully I will have occasion to listen to it driving on US roads one day 😊
It's a big, friendly place :)
Come to Texas brother
It's not an easy thing to live in the US legally, unfortunately
Come to Georgia

What a voice. What a genuine human being.
I love this song by: John Denver because he sings so very nice and kind lyrics and you gotta understand it builds you up and makes you better. It also makes you better with being positive and feeling good because it has a happy and gives you a good positive feeling and that makes peacefulness in life and you gotta understand we all need peace in this life that God has given us because it makes life better and puts our lives in the right direction

This man was a amazing song writer and from what I've read an amazing person also!
Super Nintendo Chalmer
he actually didn't write this song
planet6 he actually didn’t write this or Country Roads, but I do believe he wrote Annie’s song.
I actually have no idea how I knew this song or John Denver but I sang the song at work to drive my gf crazy and when he passed away I cried,I'm so lucky to have an older brother who introduced me to music, such good music from back then, music today hardly can compare
Sharon Ross music changed. It started late 80's, country music died mid to late 90's. It became more easy listening rock.
I would actually rather listen to some of the old songs than a few people who are singing country these days, but I do agree with you
Bradley Ortloff sr I know ugh today's country is garbage, the hard rock was good up until 1996, but a lot of the great music came out during 1955- about 1987

I know that world I was that one kid in the hood smoking weed listening to Dr Dre in cowboy boots ... Well don’t be such a “Blue Moon” Johnny Cash is good but “I’m Sorry” you feel that way. Good luck don’t slip
John Denver and Johnny Cash are the reason I haven’t completely written off Country as a genre. Amazing song.
Throw Willy Nelson in that mix and I couldn't agree more
Kenny Rogers too
Dolly Parton? "Jolene" is a jam.
Waylon Jennings
Hank Williams & Tex Williams, my friend. Consult them as well.

God bless you all, where work ethic and religion still mean something
When J.D was around America was a much warmer, and kinder....but then he died and America went cold, and dark, but that doesn't mean we can't make a comeback; we just need more great singers like J.D who love nature, and their country!!
The problem is people don't know how to get along with folks that don't agree with all their BS
The real problem is politics ... Folks started listening to all these political dickheads instead of listening to their neighbors
I'm a big country boy from Thomasville Georgia blue eyes and all I moved to Fresno California as a kid ... All my friends were Mexicans they liked the same stuff as me we all wore boots listened to country music and drank Budweiser and we got along ... We focused on what we had in common and we all became friends I had a lot of black friends too I grew up listening Georgia legends like Ray Charles and Otis Redding and I loved me some good fried chicken I ate what they ate I listened to what they listened to
Ironically I didn't like most of the white people in California very much they didn't season their food where overly healthy and looked down on my for my accent they listened to pop music and thought I was a hick because of my boots so I had very few white friends out there ... I always thought that was funny because I know people don't expect it from me when they see me
Too bad music isn't THIS GOOD anymore ): John Denver in our hearts ❤

LYRICS
Well life on the farm is kinda laid back
Ain't much an old country boy like me can't hack
It's early to rise, early in the sack
I thank God I'm a country boy
Well a simple kinda life never did me no harm
A raisin' me a family and workin' on the farm
My days are all filled with an easy country charm
Thank God I'm a country boy
Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ol' fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
And life ain't nothin' but a funny funny riddle
Thank God I'm a country boy
When the work's all done and the sun's settlin' low
I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow
The kids are asleep so I keep it kinda low
Thank God I'm a country boy
I'd play Sally Goodin all day if I could
But the Lord and my wife wouldn't take it very good
So I fiddle when I can and I work when I should
Thank God I'm a country boy
Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ol' fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain't nothin' but a funny funny riddle
Thank God I'm a country boy, woo
Well I wouldn't trade my life for diamonds or jewels
I never was one of them money hungry fools
I'd rather have my fiddle and my farmin' tools
Thank God I'm a country boy
Yeah, city folk drivin' in a black limousine
A lotta sad people thinkin' that's a mighty keen
Well, son, let me tell ya now exactly what I mean
I thank God I'm a country boy
Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ol' fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
And life ain't nothin' but a funny funny riddle
Thank God I'm a country boy
Well, my fiddle was my daddy's 'til the day he died
And he took me by the hand, held me close to his side
Said, "live a good life, play my fiddle with pride
And thank God you're a country boy"
Well, my daddy taught me young how to hunt and how to whittle
Taught me how to work to play a tune on the fiddle
He taught me how to love and how to give just a little
And thank God I'm a country boy
Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ol' fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain't nothin' but a funny funny riddle
Woo, thank God I'm a country boy, yes
Thank God im a christian boy, praise to the most high
