During the late 1800’s it was exploited for its coal resources (which did not benefit the people who lived there). Today it is one of the poorest states in America. It does have some beautiful natural scenery but many of the people there are very xenophobic and skeptical of outsiders. The ex-French part of America is Louisiana which still has a “Cajun” culture (although the French language is dying in Louisiana, the culture is still very distinct there).
