Good to return to this song in 2024. Recently my family was on a long road trip. During, suddenly, after many hours, my Korean born nephew (15) started singing this. Blew us away!
I went to college for a year in West Virginia and this song played constantly. I don't know why, but it makes me tear up every time I hear it. The fact that this guy wrote a song in 1971 that everyone around the world can relate to is just incredible. I wish he was alive to see the impact he left on the world.
It's the nostalgia of missing your past that John captured in this song. It really doesnt matter where you are from. We can never truly go back home because it will not be the same as when we left, but we long for what we left.
You're absolutely right when you say everyone around the world can relate to it. While visiting Egypt 25 years ago, I stepped into a Cairo hotel elevator and met a young man as well as an older man who wore a traditional djellaba, turban, and long white beard. The younger man seemed a little confused by my western-hemisphere clothing: "You look Arabic, but..." "I'm from the United States." "Oh. Whereabouts?" "West Virginia." The older man then smiled and started singing "Country roads, take me home..." One of my favorite memories!
For me feels like I live in Kentucky sitting on my porch with a straw hat and a bloodhound at my feet listening to this on our am radio watching the sun set over our farm oh and also that I’m white and about 5’6 190lbs/86kg

As a Christian, this song is reminding me of my heavenly home, the place I've never been to but I am nostalgic about. It is where i truly belong, my true home.
Almost heaven, West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River. Life is old there, older than the trees, younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze. Country roads, take me home to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads. All my memories gather round her, miner's lady, stranger to blue water. Dark and dusty, painted on the sky, misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye. Country roads, take me home to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads."

No matter what happens this song is a gift that no one can take away. Your son is in my prayers. Anyone who loves this song. Knows what they're trying to make it back to. He'll be ok. Maybe a little jumpier around fireworks.
I heard this on the radio when I was a kid riding in the back of a station wagon stuffed full of family. We were always moving as my father was fired and run out of one town after another. The song made me think there was a green mountain somewhere you could go to and escape your troubles. An imaginary West Virginia at the end of a long country road like the one we were driving on for unbearable hot hours without air conditioning. That old station wagon never stopped anywhere for long.

+Don Bagley My dad was an over the road salesman. We were from the Midwest and went out west with everything mortgaged in the hopes that my father won that gamble (he did). But during that time was a lot of women and drinking and driving back in forth from the west to the Midwest. By the time things were good I was raised. I remember this song playing thinking it will all end someday.

I understand you...
It's probably the only thing in WV outsiders can relate to.
The younger man seemed a little confused by my western-hemisphere clothing: "You look Arabic, but..."
"I'm from the United States."
"Oh. Whereabouts?"
"West Virginia."
The older man then smiled and started singing "Country roads, take me home..."
One of my favorite memories!
When I hear this song, I think of my grandparents and fresh air. Thank you, John Denver for the good things you gave to this world.
If this song isn’t played at my funeral I’m not even going

Selected Sound West Virginia was originally called “country roads, take me home”, but was shortened to West Virginia, due to inability to put it on signs.
My family is originally from West Virigina and my Uncle Gary organized many family trips back. We lost him earlier this year and he loved this song. We sang this at his funeral and I can't listen to it without thinking of him. We all miss him dearly

You're son is a good man and American. I listened to this song in Iraq sometimes it was painful but in a good way. Songs can connect us.
+Don Bagley Sounds like me...always moving around and never felt like I had a home. Now that I'm moved out, I find that it's hard for me to stick to one place too long. Wanderlust and feeling unsettled must run through my veins.
Don Bagley..your life sound like mine .my dad took us to Modesto a couple times.I was born there..then Texas where my bro was born..back to Modesto where my sis was born my dad ran off..my mom got a station wagon and back an forth to okla to calif..living in the back..eating bologna sandwiches ..what a lonely life it was for me.just making friends then leaving again .I'd lay back there an hear those tires whine on the road.such a lonely sound..now if I ride with anyone an happen to tune in to that sound it just brings a lonely feeling .I love john Denver..great songs....sad how some leave this world that brought a smile to your face..good day sir
Great post.
+Don Bagley Hey man, what happened in the end? Did you find your West Virginia?
One of the best songs ever made. Hands down. The calling to/missing home, the music, John's voice, all culminates into this perfect song of nostalgia and loving home.

It’s funny that everyone from West Virginia doesn’t know this guys talking about west side of Virginia, the Shenandoah river isn’t in WV it’s in Virginia, I’m personally from WV and I be getting into arguments about it
@@lil.perkocet7102 The Shenandoah empties into the Potomac at Harpers Ferry West Virginia and can be crossed there. While it runs through Virginia it does in fact touch West Virginia as well. We can in fact interpret the song anyway we choose and be correct. I believe John Denver meant the State, not a region of a State. Song writers use poetic license not geographical accuracy.
