45 Colt or .44-40... 44 CALIBER .40 GRAINS OF BLACK POWDER. Elmer Keith didn't invent the .357 Magnum until the 1930s and the 44 Mag didn't come along until the 1950s. 45 Colt would also be acceptable. No need to call it 45 LONG Colt. If it's .45 Colt and it's not .45 ACP it's an old revolver round. The other ones were .36 Navy, .32-20 (kind of anemic) 38-40, etc. 32 Colt, 32 Long Colt, .32 S&W. Big iron? 45 Colt or .44-40. I forget what Steve McQueen used in Dead or Alive. I think it was cut down 44-40 with 45-70 bullets on the belt to make it look a lot more bad-ass.

As posted elsewhere --- The "Big Iron" that inspired this song was originally built by Andy Anderson (a Hollywood gun-maker and fast-draw holster-maker favored by Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood) in his Gunfighter shop, using parts from several models. The gun was constructed with a Great Western frame and a 12" barrel made from an 1892 Winchester center-fire .44 rifle/carbine barrel. Since Anderson was 6'4" with large hands, he favored Colt 1860 Army grips and so fixed a grip frame from an 1860 Army pistol and added a Great Western cylinder chambered for .44 Magnum loads. Marty Robbins was in the shop on the day the finished gun was sold. The purchaser, also a very large man, impressed Marty by the speed of his fast draw. One week later, Anderson received in the mail a recording of "Big Iron," which Marty had written immediately after seeing the gun demonstrated. Today, the gun which so inspired Robbins resides in a private collection (see Wikipedia, see also The Fast Draw Resource Center; cf Shooting Chef, Waxahachie TX).
I'm 60 and at age 10 was taught this song by my briiliant teacher at junior school, who gave guitar lessons after class once a week. I still have the typed lyrics he gave me and treasure them! Thank you Bill Bright at Greenside, Tyneside, UK
My dad grew up across the street from Marty's house in Glendale AZ. My grandpa bought the TV repair shop from the man married to the women that taught Marty to play guitar. He hated Marty because he was poor and always trying to get him to fix his guitar for free. Till Marty made it, then he became his biggest fan. When my dad was a senior at GUHS, A white sport coat and a pink carnation made the charts. Marty pulled up in front of the school in a pink Cadillac with a dozen roses. Came to my pops English class to thank and tell the English teacher for helping him. Just a rags to riches kid. And a hell of a talent. GOD SPEED MR. ROBBINS!

You've become addicted to .44 magnum.
Nice profile picture

My great grand dad drove with marty robins, and they were close friends. Was listening to this song when my grandma, started talking to me about it, I wish I could meet him, as he is one of the best singers of all time
As posted elsewhere ---
The "Big Iron" that inspired this song was originally built by Andy Anderson (a Hollywood gun-maker and fast-draw holster-maker favored by Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood) in his Gunfighter shop, using parts from several models.
Neat
that's pretty cool
ROBBINS!
Thanks for remembering a teacher that loved his students and tried to make a difference. I play D&D with my students once a week, to teach them TTRPG.
Thank you Bill Bright
