Do people still use Rockwells? I mean there are a ton of 1 ton axles out there that are pretty tough as well. And you can get deep gearing between axles and t-case. And doesn't welding the spiders up cause issues with the heat treating?
It seems short sited to me. I get the budget build idea for the pinion brakes, but if those welds break you're fragging your entire differential. That will cost a lot more to fix than doing it right in the first place.
Yes welding does affect heat treating. They should have just installed a spool. Most 1ton axle diameters are 1.42-1.5in and are 32-35 spline shafts. Rockwells are 1.625in diameter and courses 16 spline. Way more robust. Advantages of Rockwells is square axle tubes make it easier to build 4 link, 6.72:1 gear ratio, and top loader help reduce strains on pinion angle. Also fully built 1tons are ~750lbs. Stock Rockwells weigh just over 800lbs. Once you shave the drums it probably close to or even lighter than built 1tons. Western Canadian Rockwell has a lot of useful info on military axles.
Awesome buggy just wish Jessi was here to take us along with the project too. RIP Jessi Combs
We all miss Jesse. ☹️
Great going with the upgrades, Nice to see Tommy so Quit 😀😎
Tommy didn’t quit he moved shows
Tommy's mullet is gold!
Tommy. AKA Bubba Boshers.
The host is a seriously talented engineer. 😉
No way the legend tommy just said “Daym cuz”
Great show
No one really knew how awesome Jessi was back then.
We didn't know but be had ideas.

It's fine. The little bit of welding wouldn't be enough to do a thing.

A bottom drawer buggy.... but it has Rockwells?! Not exactly bottom drawer. RIP Jessi!
The Trail Buggy is cool, but I would like it to have fenders and cover the body with a steel plate or FRP.Crew gets muddy.
What ever happened to the Isuzu crawler hauler?
Are you talking about the Suburban Gorilla?
@@bmstylee NOPE I am talking about the Isuzu NPR that has Ford F-250 axles & Cummins 5.9 Allison automatic.
@@WileE.Coyote hmmm. I remember him staring something big running on Portal axles but of the Gorilla I can't think of anything else.
