  • "Cam' Ye by Atholl" is a Scottish Jacobite folk song. The words were written by James Hogg and it is traditionally sung to a tune by Neil Gow, Junior, the son of Nathaniel Gow. The song, which celebrates the Jacobite rising of 1745, takes the form of a "gathering song" to recruit Jacobites and makes reference to many of the places and people associated with the rebellion.
    Hogg wrote in Songs, by the Ettrick shepherd (1831) that he was surprised it had become so popular; he had "dashed down the words at random" after being given the tune by Gow and considered it "one of his worst".
    Performed by the Corries, 1966.

      @@thehighlander6770 You do know he abandoned his men to their fate rather than fight on and that the large majority of highlanders (never mind the lowlands) did not support him. In fact more Scots were in arms against him than for him.

    • @thehighlander6770
      @thehighlander6770 11 месяцев назад +7

      @@fibber2u That isn't quite right. Lowlanders from the central belt were Hanoverians; however, the northeast of Scotland was one of the strongest areas of Jacobite support. Highlanders were often split on confessional lines: Episcopalians and Catholics supported the Stuarts, while Presbyterians supported the Hanoverians.
      Ultimately, it doesn't matter how many Scots supported him, because matters such as this aren't decided by popular vote. James Francis Edward Stuart was the rightful monarch regardless of how many Scots supported him.
      Your expectations of a military campaign are unrealistic. After Culloden, Bonnie Prince Charlie commanded his mean to disperse. He didn't abandon them; he wanted to try and secure more support from France, which would be necessary for the fight to continue.

    • @fibber2u
      @fibber2u 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@thehighlander6770 Oh he abandon them the rest is spin. I agree only guerilla warfare was possible, think The Bruce but he (Bruce) wanted the Scottish Throne..
      Charles was never interested in the Scottish Throne it was the English Throne he was after. He used the Highlanders (a literal minority of it's fighting force came to his flag) but placed his hopes on an English uprising when that did not happen he was always going to quit as he would not even have been able to hold Scotland against the resistance from HER people. The farther north you went from London the less popular the Hanovarians were but nowhere enough for majority support for the Stuarts. Even though English Catholics were second class subjects they knew they would be worse off under a Stuart. You may not realise a Catholic Monarchy meant dictatorship in those days, Absolute Monarchy. Scots just like the rest of the island always resist that.
      British monarchs were/are not selected along the lines of prima genitor they are (still) chosen with the consent of Parliament from a royal family even in Scotland. The reason was to prevent Absolute Monarchy. Do remember we got rid of a monarch as recently as 1936. Divine Right does not exist in Britain north or south. He was not the rightful king.

      @@fibber2u Och, yer sheughing Hanoverian propaganda, ye ken? It's important to remember that, in this instance, "absolute monarchy" means "trying to stop Parliament from discriminating against religious minorities," which is exactly what a good king is supposed to do.

      You’re about three centuries late.… The core tenant of Jacobitism involved the restoration of the Stewarts, a long-gone dynasty. However, it encompassed a much broader mix of ideas and motives. It attracted support from Scots who resented the 1707 Union and its ramifications (Loss of Scottish independence, the beginning of the Highland clearances). Numerous disillusioned Irish nationalists turned towards Jacobitism with the goal of reversing 17th century land settlements and winning the right to self-determination.
      While any and all political support swiftly subsided after 1745, Jacobitism became a highly romanticised topic since the enlightenment

      The Royal Stuart Society is a good one.
      And the Stuarts died out only in name @balladsofhistory. Their claims can go through the female line like all British dynasties and so passed through Savoy, to Modena, to Bavaria where it currently rests with the House of Wittelsbach until it shall one day pass through to the House of Liechtenstein.
