"When the Warrior Returns" - Patriotic American Song
In 1801, the fledgling United States faced increasing extortion by the Barbary pirates operating in the Mediterranean Sea. The Barbary states demanded tribute from American merchant vessels; refusal to pay would result in the capture of ships and goods, and often the enslavement or ransoming of crew members. On the orders of President Jefferson, an American naval squadron joined Swedish naval forces (who were then at war with the states) in blockading the pirates, raiding their ports, and escorting merchant shipping.
Written 9 years before “The Star-Spangled Banner,” this song by Francis Scott Key shows that he knew the melody and poetic form well, borrowing the popular tune of the "Anacr...

"The Battle of Falkirk Muir" - Scottish Jacobite Song
Просмотров 3,6 тыс.3 месяца назад
"The Battle of Falkirk Muir" is a satirical Jacobite song that mocks General Henry Hawley of the British Government Army. The battle itself was the last major Jacobite victory in the 1745 Rebellion, though it had little impact on the overall campaign. Based on the musical notations found in 'Jacobite Relics', the song was intended to be sung to the tune of "Up and Waur Them A', Willie". However...

Variants of this old Jacobite song survived in the oral tradition of Gaelic speakers in Co. Tyrone and Co. Donegal, Ulster, into the beginning of the 20th century. Who is Trelawny? Who are the Cornish?

    • @dutchskyrimgamer.youtube2748
      @dutchskyrimgamer.youtube2748 15 дней назад

      It's unclear who Trelawny exactly is. Cornwall is a region of England, it's the only Celtic nation to not have self rule. The Cornish language, which looks similar to Welsh and Breton, had gone extinct but has been revived, with about a 1000 native tongues ad of yet. Trelawny also has a Cornish version

      It is assumed that the Trelawny mentioned in the song is Sir Jonathan Trelawny (3rd Baronet), the Bishop of Bristol, who had been imprisoned in the Tower of London by King James II in 1688 during the Glorious Revolution. He was imprisoned for three weeks, then tried and acquitted. However, it is more likely that it refers to his grandfather, Sir John Trelawny (1st Baronet), a Cornish Royalist leader who had been imprisoned by Parliament in 1628.

Wha saw the 42nd merchin doon the Broomielaw? Some o them had tartan toories Some o them had nane at aa Some o them had green umbrellas For tae keep the rain awa. Wha saw the tattie howkers? Wha wouldna fecht for Charlie, Wha wouldna draw the sword, Wha wouldna up and rally At the Royal Prince’s word? Think on Scotia’s ancient heroes, Think on foreign foes repelled, Think on glorious Bruce and Wallace, Wha the proud usurpers quelled.

    Nice, but it's a Protestant song lamenting the Sack of Magdeburger by Catholic troops in 1631. So, I could find the Imperial flag is a bit misplaced here.

    • @balladsofhistory
      @balladsofhistory 27 дней назад

      If you want to simplify it, sure you can say that. However, that’s quite literally the meaning, it’s expressed metaphorically in the original Welsh lyric, which is further reflected in the English translation. “Gwrido” means to blush, flush, or redden.

      @Purple_694 25 дней назад

      @@balladsofhistory To be honest, that was exactly what I expected, (That being that when translated it meant "to blush") I just found it funny that the sword was "blushing".
