  • William Billings' "Chester" became a well-known song of the American Revolution. The most popular version was his second version of the song, published in 1778 in his collection The “Singing Masters Assistant”. Billings wrote the lyrics to the song himself. The song is regarded as one of America's first national anthems and is often considered an unofficial anthem of New England.
Performed by His Majestie's Clerkes (Paul Hillier), Home to Thanksgiving: Songs of Thanks and Praise, 2005.

I first heard this on the HBO John Adams series. Though it was only the first verse.

I understand that this song almost became our national anthem.
