- I bought this Synodontis under the name "petricola" several years ago. I'm still not sure if it's a petricola or a S. lucipinnis. They are very similar and I'm not certain which it is.
It's neither, it's actually a synodontis pepsicola.

What? Loosepenis?
To make it even more confusing Dwarf Petricola is the common name of Synodontis Lucipinnis lol
Bingo
Might be a hybrid, the various rift lake Synodontis species are often hybridised in the aquarium trade.
I don't understand why people say a true lucipinnis doesn't have smaller spots on the head. Every single source I've found for buying either a lucipinnis or a "4 inch dwarf petricola" has a photo of the fish where the spots get noticeably smaller there.
I have both bro and that's a Petricola but it can be a hybrid for sure thats always the case in todays aquarium trade lol
Hmm interesting. I was sold mine as petricola as well. They've been with me for quite some time and they're growth hasn't changed whatsoever.
I'd agree with you, lucipinnis is a much more common fish, and true petricola is very rare in the hobby. I used to have a pair of fish that had most of the physical characteristics of lucipinnis, if you want to see a photo of one of them
Sure, you can post a link.

Hope that works, never shared a picture on a RUclips comment before
That looks a lot like mine.
Dan Hiteshew I figured as much. I never got a good look to see if there were pores, but everything else pointed to lucipinnis, at least to me. They had the spots that blended together, never grew past three and a half inches, had the windows on the fins, and didn't have an overly snake-like body. But I couldn't be 100% sure. I'd be interested if you ever got a good enough look to see if there were pores.
I have absolutely no experience or background with this fish or any type near it, but is it possible that it could be a hybrid?
I guess it's possible.
It could be a hybrid of the 2 I believe they can interbreed with each other
I think the one I had was a petricola..Im not sure though..It died when it was about 5 or 6 years old for no apparent reason..It was much darker coloured than this one & harder to see the spots, but when it came out under the lights so I could see it's spots they werent conected, they were just round spots.. He or she was about an inch & a half long when I bought it & was about 4 inches when it died mysteriously..I miss that fish..In my community of tetras rasboras & cherry barbs it looked like a shark was swimming around in there.lol
beautifull fish
should be kept in small groups
I purchased 3 tank bred that were labeled as Pretricola at my local fish club auction a while back I'm not sure if they are but now, I have a bunch more they bred in my tank.
That's exciting! Mine are Lucipinnis
I have one very similar… it grew from 2.5 to 3.5 inches within a year. Dont know if its multipunctatus, lucipinnis or petricola. It was sold to me as petricola. Also, synodontid valentiana hybrid was sold as petricola.
I love your gourami tank videos!
Thanks! I'll be doing one soon.
At end of day,is cool fish either way,I have four of them, very active , interesting fish.
I commented on this video yesterday.. Now my comment has gone. Its definitely a petricola. I had one.. Was exactly the same as this fish. They're my favourite of the cats.
I never saw your other comment. I also posted a short video with music. Maybe you commented under that one?

petricola for sure.. I breed them
What ever it is it a nice looking fish. It looks like the big one but i wouldn't know. I do like the fish though.
Plus i wish i could replicate your tank but i keep cichlids in a 90 and i will soon get a 125 for a saltwater triggerfish, in other words i probably dont have the space for another tank because the severums arent going anywhere and im set on trying out saltwater for the first time with a trigger, but can i get a full stocking list for that tank so that if i ever decide to get a 3rd tank ill know what to put in it
This tank has an Angelfish, a T Bar Cichlid, about 10 serpae Tetras, about 10 silver Hatchetfish, and a few female guppies.
I'm in Australia and I paid $30/$40 for my petricola, starting to think it might not be petricola now
Mine is a Lucipinnis. It's still a few inches long after about 8 years now. (Petricola get considerably larger)
I paid 35 for 4 of them and found another 5 at 15 each. Both sold to me as petricolas. They're always in and out of the rock cave so I barely them. Still see them more than my 85 dollar clown plecos. I thought they were dead but moved some stuff and there they were. Happy days
I purchased one a few days ago, and I think it could be a petricola.
The middle of the back fin is solid black, the spots are kind of alingned on the body, and the spots get smaller and closer to each other on the head area.
Whatever species it is, can they be kept in a community tank?
Yes, they're fine in a friendly community.
I agree with a possible hybrid. One thing may help answer the question though. Ive noticed in my breedings of both pwtricolla and lucipinnis that they the lucies have an extremely slow growth rate. Slower than petricola. How was this ones frowth rate.
Pretty slow, but it's already the max size of a Lucipinnis at only a few years old.
Dan Hiteshew my gut feels more lucipinnis. Great vid & info on the difderences between petricola and lucipinnis. Get that back some rest.
I'm getting really sick of lying here with an ice pack. Lol No choice though.
I just picked up a multipunctatus, but I think it's either a petricola or lucipinnis...
Multipunctatus do not have any white at the front of the dorsal fin. Lucipinnis and petricola both have white at the very front of the dorsal
Did you figure out which one this is? Because I have one that looks exactly like it & I have no idea either.
It's a lucipinnis. It hasn't gotten any bigger in all these years, so it has to be a lucipinnis. The petricola would get about 5 inches or so.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly is he still by himself?.. These guys do so much better in groups of 3-5. Love my synodontis, they're awesome fun fish.
Can I ask you how you got this synodontis comfortable enough to come out in the light? I thought they were nocturnal.
It's always been outgoing since I got it.
Keeping them in groups of 4 or 5 really bring them to life and much more social/active. I had 2 for awhile in my 75 gallon and added 2 more down the road and they are all over the place now, even come out and up to the surface at feeding time.. Before the 2 would stay in their same cave 24/7 and only peak out to get scraps of food that made it to their cave.
It's a Canhardly catfish=Can hardly tell what it is!LOL
Thanks for sharing :) Do you know exactly where that auxillary pore is supposed to be located? Somewhere near the pectoral fin right?
It's been so many years since I looked into that. I can't remember.
Will he eat smaller shrimp? I just got one of these today and he’s less than one inch. I got Caradina and crystal shrimp
I really don't know.
Luci 100%
Can the two crossbreed? Maybe it is a hybrid?
No idea.
A lot of the synodontis can hybridize
hybrid?
Maybe.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly if it shares the traits of both it probably a hybrid
Could it be a multipunctatus?
No. I know it's not that. I can't even keep one of them in my water. I wish I could.
Fair enough. The closest thing I have is a Raphael. Which isn't close at all. Whatever it is, it's adorable.
It looks like some kind of cross breed.
Could it be a hybrid
Can these fish hybridize together?
I don't know.
best kept of at least 3 or more no less, they are alot more social that way
This is lucipinnis.
Isn't one of them a lot more expensive?
I believe so.
Why put you in the same tank amozonias species and africain species ?
The Petricola (or lucipinnis) can live in neutral water.
Will this guy eat plants?
Probably a little.
Max size of fish
Lucipinnis only get a few inches.
Do you know how old it is?
Edit: sorry, i know im late
The one I have left is about 7 years old I guess. I don't know how old it was back then.
Dan Hiteshew is he still this small?
@@Sasha_st2 Yes, I've concluded it's a lucipinnis since it hasn't gotten any bigger in several years.
It's a midshipman.
Can they hybridize?
Probably.
Im going to throw a curve ball and guess that its a synodontis multiplicantus
It's definitely not that. I'm pretty sure it's a lucipinis.
Definitely not multipunctatus as they do not have the white at the front of the dorsal fin
Tim G then someone sold me the wrong fish bc i have this exact fish in my tank
looks like a petricola, has smaller spots on the head, larger spots on rest of the body
How much was it
I got 8 of them, so I wound up paying about $30 a piece, but I think they were priced at $35.99 or something.
Dan Hiteshew what happened to the other 7?
I'll explain in another video, but in short, I killed them by using too much RO water.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly that's too bad...
Could be a mix
Prob a hybrid
I’m getting this type of fish but should I get 1 or 3
ejaylatino I have 5 of them and they are really cool to watch interacting together. Mine don't hang out in view like this one unless the room is dark and they don't like when I get too close. Still really cool fish.
next time can u make the title English thank u
They are scientific names for two similar species of catfish. Not sure how he could make it English? Add tea?
It is save a pretricola it is a male
Synodontis lucipinnis, the window is on the anal and pelvic fins and is present.
Hybrid perhaps
