I just came from MEPS and was shooting for QM but got talked in to ACEF because of the advancement rate and regretted it immediately I'll be in contact with my recruiter to Fill out a DAR to get QM before my ship date. Choose what makes you happy don't worry about the other stuff.

Are QMs strictly on ships or can they also be on land?
@@onionwhisperer626 They have a shore duty, when their ship/shore rotation comes up. It could be weather station, oceanographic data collection, recruiting, instructor, etc. Almost anything. The thing you have to remember is that ship/shore rotation is usually 4/2, at least it was when I was in back in the early 90s. So as a QM, you would do 4 years at sea, then 2 years on shore rotation, then back out to sea. Its definitely a sailor rating, not like Yeoman or other clerical type rates, where they had 4/4 rotation. You will never get shore duty your first 4 year enlistment, you will be out to sea.
@@itperdition thanks for the quick reply sir! I leave to go to bootcamp this upcoming monday. And I'm going to be a QM. When I first signed up this virus wasnt a thing so when it came around I slowly started to become nervous about being overseas because I didnt want to be too far away from my family in case anything happened and since I'm in florida I was hoping I'd get to stay in jacksonville on base but after seeing your response it doesnt look like that's going to be the case. @@onionwhisperer626 No problem. Best of luck to you, as you are in for a heck of an adventure. Your first 8 weeks will be boot in Great Mistakes. I went to boot in Orlando, but the Navy has shut that RTC down for many years now. You will then be shipped off to QM `A` school for several weeks to learn how to do the basics of your job. I couldn't tell you about that, because I never went to `A` school, I was a designated striker. I did however go to QM `C` school in Groton, CT as an QM3. `C` schools are advanced training schools and you usually don't get picked to go to one in your first hitch, but I got lucky. Regardless, after your `A` school, you will receive your orders to report to your ship. You will be the low man on the totem pole, so to speak, but keep a good attitude and LEARN from the other QMs in your department. If you have an old chief around, ask them to teach you celestial navigation and other higher forms of ship handling and navigation. There are many times in my life I have thought back on my time as a QM and it was some of the most rewarding in my life. You will be out there defending us and keeping the shipping lanes open. The safety of your ship and her crew is literally in your hands. Don't screw it up! :D

When QM's are on shore duty, where do they get sent, what do they do ?
Weather and Oceanographic stations if you are lucky. Logistics and wherever the navy needs you if you are not.
I thought quartermasters were in charge of supplies, logistics and quarters for enlisted and officers

Quartermasters are required to be qualified helmsman/master helmsman.
Most of the time BMs drive the ship. The QM trains the BMs for that watch station. During special evolutions, entering/leaving port, underway replenishments, etc., the QM Master Helmsman takes the helm.

Does anybody know if this is a good job that transfers to the civilian world ???
If your a QM you come out of the Navy qualified as Able Bodied Seaman in the merchant/cruise fleet. Work on tugs and other harbor craft as well. QM transitions to a lot of sea going civilian jobs, but not really anything on shore.
