  • The quartermaster is the enlisted member in charge of the watch-to-watch navigation and the maintenance, correction, and preparation of nautical charts and navigation publications. They are also responsible for navigational instruments and clocks and the training of ship's lookouts and helmsmen. They perform these duties under the control of the ship's navigator or other officer if there was no officer navigator. In the modern navy, a quartermaster is a petty officer who specializes in navigation. The rating abbreviation is QM. The symbol used for the rating and worn on uniforms is a ship's wheel. #navy #quartermaster #military
    On U.S. Navy submarines, the job of a quartermaster is done by a qualified navigation electronics technician (NAV-ET). Along with the job of a Navy surface QM, NAV-ETs are also responsible for electronic systems that deal with navigation, internal communications, atmosphere monitoring, ship's entertainment systems, re-circulatory air systems (ventilation) and remote valve indication or manipulation.

      Katy Montejano I was with my recruiter today and he was suggesting QM as a choice. I said aviation or BM, he said I scored too high to be a BM lol. QM sounds interesting tho. Everything at the 2:10 mark sound like a foreign language.

    • @andrek5533
      @andrek5533 7 лет назад

      Katy Montejano I will, the recruiter gave me a site I can go on to look up each rate. It tells a lot of stuff about the rate, like the work environment, how long A school is, etc etc. The part about the stars at night got my attention lol. Where I'm from, as a kid I spent the summers in the "country" area. There was little light, and at nights, it seemed like the entire sky was crowded with stars. On a few occasions ive seen satellites or even a "shooting star" or two go by.
      I wish you the best of luck in your journey. Maybe I'll see you on the bridge sometime lol

      I enlisted for QM back in May. I leave Nov 8th so it's only a couple days away now and I'm extremely happy with my choice of QM from everything I've read and watched QM seems to be a great rate. Being on the bridge, the most important room on the ship surrounded by the most important people on the ship, being on a first name basis with the Captain. All of that honestly just makes the rate stand out above others. I'm 19 and knowing that the U.S. military and my Captain will look towards me to Guide, Drive and overall just keep track of one of the Navy's ship's at such an early age is honestly a privilege to do. I can't wait in a couple months I'll be actually be there. I'll let you guys know how bootcamp went.

    Was a QM aboard a Cleveland class cruiser and then a Sumner class destroyer in the 1970s in the Gulf of Tonkin & the Mekong River Delta. It was intense navigation. Got acutely intense when we entered Haiphong Harbor to assist in mining it in 1972. We were all scared, yet, it was an exhilarating adrenaline rush ! I was on the helm.

In all honesty only reason why I'm joining is to serve on a Air craft carrier and get benefits for University and get some money being on the sea (love the sea). I also thought about Nuclear but I'm not American (Yet) that has been living in their home country for the past 5 years (going to enlist as soon as I return) so I doubt I'll get a security clearence. I just enlisted as a Quartermaster today, I'm 18 and was hoping you could go into further detail about the job and what it's like, I leave Nov 1st so I still have a while to wait but any additional information would be much appreciated. Also I was wondering how did you become a forward Gunner as QM or get put on a small boat, I was led to believe I wouldn't be handling weapons as QM and that I would be on much larger boat's not the small boat you where on, did you volunteer for that could you explain please?

    • @BennyWinslow
      @BennyWinslow  7 лет назад +1

      Brendan. Congrats on QM. Forward gunner on a small boat..well, you'll have many paths available to you in your Navy career. Keep your ears open. Something might pop up. As far as handling guns. I was a .50 cal gunner as a seaman on a warship...as well as a quartermaster. You will always handle guns as a watch stander in port. If you want to handle guns, talk to your Master at Arms. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Still super excited for QM, something about being on the bridge in the thick of the action sounds appealing and very few rates put you on the bridge stright out of schooling, so it an honor. I've heard that it's possible for QM to get put on submarines but I'm not sure, I'd like to actually go on one. Anyway good luck to all.

      +Corey Gardner Corey, thank you for the response to the VLOGS. I really appreciate it. I'm sure you've done a lot of research on both SUPPO vs. SWO. Looking at it from the enlisted side, SWO's have a high speed lifestyle, lots of responsibility, lots of work. You'll go to a ship automatically. You'll be in charge of a lot of sailors, you will be in a community with a lot of pride. SWO's are the extension of the captain. You will be leading men and women every minute of the day. SUPPO's have a more tranquil job in the Navy. Most of the work is done at a desk. The thing about SUPPO that is intriguing is the variety of places you can be assigned to. You can be attached to special operations commands, aviation commands, ships, you name it...we all need gear. I keep going back and forth on what I would chose. SUPPO's are happier people as a whole. They seem to have a good lifestyle. Either way you're going to have to grit it out for a few years. Once you hit Lieutenant, you're golden. If I were you Corey, I'd flip a coin. HA! Have a great rest of the week and stay in touch. -Benny

    So far Ive been thinking Seabees, with these preferences of mine. Got any other suggestions ? Thanks and keep up the cool vids.
    Although I must add.. Im a bit preoccupied with.. how good of a marksman can I be, in boot camp, to begin with even. last time I even shot a gun was a couple years ago.

    • @BennyWinslow
      @BennyWinslow  8 лет назад

      +Dontslaparound Hey, Seabee sounds right for your interests. They have a good lifestyle. They are also a proud group. Most jobs in the Navy require working with your hands. I don't want to steer you one way or another. You just have to assess your options after the ASVAB. Do a lot of research. Ask a lot of questions.
      As far as marksmanship, don't worry about it. If you get a job that requires you to cary a firearm, the Navy will turn you into a marksman. No experience necessary. Do what you want and don't take a job that you are uncomfortable with. Good luck. -Benny

    Do you have any insight on the (LS) Logistics Specialist rate?

    • @rubenespinoza5000
      @rubenespinoza5000 8 лет назад

      LS is 200% overmanned in the navy you will never make rank above 3rd class if you're lucky. Look at other rates LS is supply not that great a job.

    Makes me kinda sad I'll probably never be on a small ship for any real amount of time. I'm AV which yeah carriers are badass and the flight deck is something special but that means I wont really have any surface warfare stuff on destroyers, cruisers, or frigates. Living on a destroyer would be awesome.

    "Pick wisely"?! How do you do that when the Navy does not give you a choice?

    • @theonetheonlydeganthevegan4392
      @theonetheonlydeganthevegan4392 8 лет назад +1

      +badweetabix Well you do have a choice they just push you towards the jobs that have the most openings. If your scores are high enough you can get any job you want as long as its not over crowded. I may be wrong but I'm 99% sure its like that.

    • @john5743
      @john5743 8 лет назад

      my ASVAB score was fairly high and I only had 2 jobs to pick from. IT and CM. I chose CM and I was lucky because that was exactly what I wanted besides AM and AD.

    • @nicoled7510
      @nicoled7510 8 лет назад +1

      No, that's how it is. I had scored a 90 out of 99 on my ASVAB so of course I was available for more options. When I went to MEPS, they gave me a pretty good selection of choices that I could choose from, but it's true they do try to enforce the ones they need on you. I ended up choosing to be a Nuke because I have an interest in Physics and Chemistry and believed it was the right choice for me. However, you DON'T have to choose a job that day if you don't see a job you like.

  • @JacobAndJamal
    @JacobAndJamal 4 года назад

    I figured Navy used GPS and modern nav aids to do all this . I’ve been in Air Force and worked with Army most my career thus far, so the whole ship/sailer life is foreign to me.

    • @BennyWinslow
      @BennyWinslow  4 года назад

      Yeah I hear that. The Navy does use a lot of electronic navigation aids but they also teach navigators to use old school methods first. Thanks for the comment.
