There’s a literal world of whisky out there, but while we know that’s cause for celebration it can also be a daunting prospect, particularly if you’re new to the category.

Most Scotchs that I have tried have had a strong peat flavour to it. Is that typical of a scotch or can you get a less peat flavoured scotch?

Bourbon has to be aged for a minimum of two years to be labelled as straight bourbon, but there's no minimum for it to be bourbon. You could just pass the new make through a barrel and it would technically be bourbon. Japan also plays pretty fast and loose with what counts as "from Japan" so do your research before buying (though I think they might be starting to put more regulations in place).

I appreciate your feedback ,and sorry for the delay.
Actually, if you watch the interview with Maggie, the president of the Bourbon Women's Association that I posted about a month ago, I recall she said something to the effect that you can just pass it through the barrel and it counts or something like that. As you said
      Cheers

The barrels also need to be new charred oak barrels where many others may be in used wine barrels etc.

@@WinetastersChoice I think as long as they don’t label it ‘’Straight’’ bourbon, they could technically do it, but I don’t think it’s really done that much, I’ve never had any bourbon that wasn’t straight and at least 4 years old (‘’straight’’ and less than four years, it has to state the age so the vast majority of straight whiskey is at least 4 years old). Anyway, good info and video !

Thank you for your explanation for the differnt kinds of Whiskies. It would had been good adding Indian Whiskies, which have a very high percentage worldwide. The numbers speak for themselves. There are eight Indian whiskeys in the top 10 best-selling whiskeys. Only two Scots Johnnie Walker (third place) and Ballantines (10th place) represent the motherland of blended whiskey (see Drinks International)

Canadian whisky has the fewest rules (most leeway) so it has the most notable differences from one brand to the next. Crown Royal, Canada House, SUPERB. Northern lights, Canadian Mist, NOT GOOD .
