Learn how to create drop down lists in Excel in this step-by-step tutorial. By using drop-down lists, you can help people work more efficiently in worksheets by allowing people to pick an item from a list that you create.
In this video, I show you how to create a pre-defined drop-down list and a drop-down list based on another table. Additionally, I show you how to show an input message to provide users with a tool tip. Lastly, I also show how to display a warning message when users enter an incorrect value.
As full-disclosure, I work at Microsoft as a full-time employee.

How can I create drop down for choosing a date?
@@guytaylor8496 unfortunately you can't do it out of the box. There are third party plug ins that give you that capability.
Didn't work automatic input for new value
Basically my boss thinks I’m like really talented. Nope I just pull up these videos ever time I need to do something new in excel. Thanks man!
Same here. 😊 Kevin, you are a real life/work saver 💯♥️

Great tutorial. No fluff, no annoying music, crystal clear speaking. You need to make a tutorial on making tutorials
Great job explaining the drop down list.
How can you use the drop down list to bring in additional columns from the list. Example: The drop down list contain various fruits. When you select a fruit, the related unit price of that fruit also populates the table. Then, you can enter the quantity and use a formula to get the extended price. Similar to an invoice.
Very clear and concise, applied to my worksheet immediately! Thanks
quick and to the point, ty mate
Thanks Kevin. I like how you get straight to the point. No long winded videos.

Thank you so much sir Kevin, actually my teacher assigned us an assignment regarding this kind of scenario where we are needed to think a solution on how can we immediately have a list of items so we can easily input it on a cell. It's taken me a while but I got there in the end. You have to be careful to do the steps in order otherwise it all goes pear shaped. I do believe I've learned a new skill. Thanks Kevin.

You are awesome Kevin, I have learnt so much from your channel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Fantastic tutorial, however, mines is not updating dynamically. I do have my list as a table with header in a separate sheet, but it won’t update if I add data to the table.
Do u got a awnser already? I got the same problem. cheers
@@frankdewit3445 Yes, you’ll create that list as a table (ctrl + T). Give table a meaningful name. Now in data validation use =INDIRECT("CategoryList") where categorylist is your table name. Hope this helps.
thank you Kevin! This video is very clear!
Entertaining!. I really enjoy watching your videos, I can't wait for the next one!. The last one hit me really hard.
Thank you! Very easy to understand and manage to create my own drop-down list in excel!
Excellent Tutorial Kevin, saved me a lot of time and headaches! The only issue that I am having is when I add additional content to the tables they are not showing in the drop downs even though they are showing as part of the table, the data validation is limiting to my original table. I am and absolute novice so if anyone reads this and knows what I am doing wrong I would greatly appreciate a hand!
Thank you Kevin. You make life much easier!
Honestly i thought it was more complicated than this!!! I've always avoided working with excel (or doing stuff manually with no formulas etc) coz some instructions or videos are so vague or poorly made respectively. Ill be checking out later "pivot tables" if you have a video on that. I am sooo subcribing to learn more tricks. PS: This is the longest comment i've ever made on YT.
😅
Thank you. Most helpful.
Thanks. This made it easy!
This was perfect! Thank you so much!

Hi. Man, you help so many people with your tutorials. Thank you very much.
When I create a table and tell the dropdown menu to get info from the table, it doesn't update automatically when I add new items to the table. Am I doing anything wrong? thank you
Thank you so much for your sharing..
Great video Kevin, I keep forgetting how to do this, as its only done occasionally! Thanks for creating the video!

Neat, thanks Kevin!
Hi Kevin - can you help? Is there a way to have a multiple language dropdown using either word or excel? Thanks so much for your videos. So far, they have helped enormously.
Thanks for the easy to follow info on just the topics I'm looking for. I'm seeing up an inventory and sales tracking spreadsheet. If I start with a simple one but with all the data points I want is it easy enough to add in all the charts and pull down tabs later? I need to get my items in inventory but may not be able to get my spreadsheet as detailed right away. Eventually I want to be able to evaluate all my sales numbers. Thanks much!
This was so useful!!!! Thank you! :]
Thanks a lot. very helpful. ;) ;) :)
My teammate just quit and I needed to know how to do this. Thanks for posting.
You are the best! Thanks ! Anyway you could please show us how to create “consequential (dependent) drop down lists”? Thanks!
You a genius! Thank you so much, easy peasy.

Yessss this made my job way easier ❤❤❤
Oh and by the way, great explanation. I used it for my first try of course there was an item that needed to be added to the list and the user did not know what to do.
