Ever Since Grandma saw this on Lawrence welk, its been one of her favorite songs . She plays, sings and dances to it when she treats her cancer sickness, pain and gluacoma!
I love waking up, making a nice fresh coffee, packing a bong and just sit and relax with this song while staring out into the sky. Such a great feeling. Feels like freedom.
@@johnrhouse8075 I genuinely love it when people respond to my comments from over a decade ago. I even remember writing this one! Good times those were
Happy 50th anniversary to this great song by Mike Brewer and Tom Shipley! (1971-2021). It’s June 2021 as I post this comment; it was recently released this time 50 years ago in 1971.
I saw the Welk orchestra on do the song on TV fairly recently. The Welk show is on Saturdays at 6 Pacific time on PBS. If I get it on tape, I’ll try and contact you. 🐿
They were based in Kansas City in the early '70s. They played here all the time. Great memories especially at the Vanguard and Cowtown Ballroom. A guy named Paul and I interviewed them once for the UMKC school paper. They explained that the song wasn't about drugs. It's about being fed up with too much touring. Nonetheless by the time we finished we were several tokes over the line.
I love taking road trips & riding around in my friend's 1963 VW Beetle while listening to this song. It reminds me a lot of my Dad because his favorite car was the VW Beetle (he owned several of them during his lifetime), & he was usually "One Toke Over The Line". The apple sure as hell didn't fall far from the tree seeing as I'm going to bake in a little while.
Brewer and Shipley was my very first concert in Middlesex, NJ. in 1971. And yes they did this song and I loved it then as I do now!!!!!!! Thanks guys!!!!
This Is Such a Kickin' Tune!! Im The Youngest Daughter OF 4 Girls, My Sisters Are All AwsOme Vocalist, They Were All Very Active In The church When We Were Growing Up, At My Fathers Demand..My Oldest Sister Began To SIng This In Front Of My Father And He Thought It Was A Gospel Tune Too!!! My Mom STILL Laughs About That!!! Haaahaa!! "ONe TOKE Over The LIne, Sweet Jesus!!! Hopein' That The Train Is On Time!!" Haaahaaa!!! It Kills Me!!! Brewer & Shipley Kick-Arse!!!
It was great when they came and played for an assembly at our high school a few times back in the 70's.. Like 3wideBob said too.. Cowtown ballroom and Vanguard were great venues to see them at too. I play a bunch of their songs on my acoustic guitar.. Love the guys!
Rural Space is one of my all-time favorites to this day. They were a great duo, great musical taste. It's weird to see them older. We were so young in those days, so full of optimism about the future. We had no conception of time.
I remember my mother trying to tell me it was "One TOKEN over the line." (I think she thought that because of the railway station and train references). :)
LOL, I can see why she would have thought it was One TOKEN over the line! Once years ago I heard this song on the radio then about a half hour later a man called in to the radio station saying,”I’m 47 years old and I STILL don’t know what a TOKE is!” So the DJ goes,”Well, I’ll give you a hint...(pretends to be taking a puff on marijuana), then “COUGH!” explaining that it’s a puff from a marijuana (or Mary Jane, as they used to call them, like today’s popular slang terms of pot and weed), simply “One marijuana puff TOO MANY!” The man understood then and was happy to finally know what a toke was. I was 23 at the time and I even knew what a toke was.
Lime A Rita in one hand Doobie in the other. Sitting in a Mr. Turtle pool, putting prices on yard sale stuff, playing 70s on my tablet. Life is gooooood.
"Waitin' for the train that goes home to sweet Mary & hopin' that the train is on time. Sittin' downtown in a railway station one toke over the line." HAPPY 4/20!!! Smoke up!!!
Lawrence Welk was not completely off the target. The song, the original recording at least, really does have a gospel feel. And the duo singing on the original is so sweet.
I sang this song a lot as I hitch-hiked the East Coast in the early 70's. Those were the days! Being on the black list meant you were doing something right!!
seriously one of the more beautiful harmonies i've ever heard Not on this this video (though i 5'd it anyway) but on the actual recording of the song the end is beautiful. I know it don't seem like the right word but it's the only one i find fitting.
Actually, Tom Shipley has told me he has no regrets for this song. And he has found the Lawrence Welk version of the song - Awesome! View it in our Favorites or at UTube/ShipleyT
The story is different than the story they tell in 2018 live version. They said Nixon tried to get the song banned and that Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead sang the song the same time that Gail and Dale did it on The Lawrence Welk not Dave and Dottie. The Lawrence Welk version is on RUclips.
Have you seen the Lawrence Welk Show version of this song, on the "shipleyt" channel? Lawrence thought it was a gospel tune, too and I guess he was right. I'm a fan of Mother Maybelle, also. I do this song on the Mountain Dulcimer - Autoharp would be cool too.- Mingo
Love Lawrnce Welk & Jerry Garcia...Whoooooooo do you love...Hope it's me!! DEAD Forever!!!Wanna be one toke over the line when that FEMA Train comes rolling in....LOL!!!! Peace Out♥ Paula♥
The Grateful Dead did it 25 years later? This song came out in 1971, Jerry Garcia died in 1995 so they missed it by a year. Very interesting in any case!
@MrBigrobmjca3 part of being high feels like when you get a great idea. Part of it feels like when a TV show is funny, times ten. Part of it feels like being a little disoriented but not caring. Put them all together, amplify them, and then say goodbye to having a quick, accurate mind and a sharp memory.
That depends on what that accurate mind and sharp memory have been through. If you'd been through half of what I've endured sometimes being forgetful is a relief. Don't judge others, for you know not how others have suffered, dumbass!

yeah man freedom from any kind of judgment, and responsibility, and reality, and anything that would make me useful to society😂

That's my morning on this new years eve
Happy 50th anniversary to this great song by Mike Brewer and Tom Shipley! (1971-2021). It’s June 2021 as I post this comment; it was recently released this time 50 years ago in 1971.
LOOK, No Autotune, No flashing Lights, No Special Effects.... Just Pure Talent. They just don't make em like this any more. >
Ah....takes me back to the early 70's....
They should have had more of their songs played on the radio...
That chord progression is one of the best things to ever grace my ears
One Toke Over The Line , Brewer & Shipley Live !
It's been years since i heard this !!!!!!
I saw that Lawrence Welk episode and laughed and laughed.
+C.S. Weaver It was great!
Just shared a clip of that which I found on here on Facebook a couple of hours ago, and it was....amazing.
I've often wondered what Lawrence Welk thought a 'toke' was ..... LOL
I saw the Welk orchestra on do the song on TV fairly recently. The Welk show is on Saturdays at 6 Pacific time on PBS. If I get it on tape, I’ll try and contact you. 🐿
Made Nixon's enemy list.... RESPECT!

I saw them at a concert at the University of Mo at Rolla in 1970...so good!
A nice video of Brewer and Shipley performing all of their hits.

They played a concert at the university of Missouri at Rolla in 1970 (I think)...great memories....great lyrics...
One of my all time favorites. :D
Great song, a real classic.
Right on!! I used to sing along to this song on the radio when I was just a small child. No wonder I grew up to be what I am today...
ThankGod for Brewer and Shipley! I been a fan since 1975.
Brewer and Shipley was my very first concert in Middlesex, NJ. in 1971. And yes they did this song and I loved it then as I do now!!!!!!! Thanks guys!!!!

Fucking awesome!!!
Thank you so much for sharing this rare pearl, man...
I grew up listening to this song :)
My mom gave me this 45 when I was a kid!
Rural Space is one of my all-time favorites to this day. They were a great duo, great musical taste. It's weird to see them older. We were so young in those days, so full of optimism about the future. We had no conception of time.
Its remarkable how much they look and sound like they did nearly 30 years prior when the song was released.
classic....and fabulous!
thanks for the memory
I remember my mother trying to tell me it was "One TOKEN over the line." (I think she thought that because of the railway station and train references). :)
TOO funny!!

this was the first album i ever owned when i was 5 back in 1973..lol...it was given to me at a charity picnic
One toke over the line... The first song from "Fear and loathing in Las Vegas" soundtrack. Just wonderful..
Lime A Rita in one hand Doobie in the other. Sitting in a Mr. Turtle pool, putting prices on yard sale stuff, playing 70s on my tablet. Life is gooooood.
Playing 70's on a tablet, that's disgusting where's your turntable
These guys perform in the Kanss City area quite often. Great song and great people.
5 stars .
ROCK ON!!! Brings back many "happy" memories. ;o)
Everyone should look into more of Brewer and Shipley's music, they have many as good or better than this ! I have their tunes on right now , GREAT !
Great song!
Jerry Garcia also played steel guitar on their song "Oh Mommy." Brewer and Shipley -- such a great duo.
Great, I love 'em too. There will be more from Tom and Michael soon.
I love this song! Thanks for posting.
"Waitin' for the train that goes home to sweet Mary & hopin' that the train is on time. Sittin' downtown in a railway station one toke over the line." HAPPY 4/20!!! Smoke up!!!
Love this song :)
It sure would have been fun to see that gig
One of my top fav tunes!!
ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SONG EVER
My friend nicknamed m "One Toke Over The Line Liam". Gee, I wonder why? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!! This song reminds me of my Dad.
I had no idea what they were talking about in this song, and I grew up in the 60's. Then again, I never had my 1st toke until the age of 21...
I love how they say "Sweet Jesus"
@Podok86 that deserves one bazillion thumbs up

Fear and loathing is creeping up on me... I had to get out. I had to make my escape!

Hey ya'll, we've got the rest of this concert up now: "Indian Summer" & "Wichi Tai To". It's great. Merry Solstice, Christmas, Boxer Day, Yule Tidings!

Fuckin A.. this is one of my favorite songs ever. Anyone ever see Fear and Loathing? One toke over the liiiiine.
Subversives. What an honor!
Actually, Tom Shipley has told me he has no regrets for this song. And he has found the Lawrence Welk version of the song - Awesome! View it in our Favorites or at UTube/ShipleyT
I count it double honor to have been on the "ENEMIES" list for both republican and democrat presidents
This song sounds better with acoustic guitars better than when they recorded this back in the 70's.
How awesome.
Ahh and and the banjo?
The story is different than the story they tell in 2018 live version. They said Nixon tried to get the song banned and that Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead sang the song the same time that Gail and Dale did it on The Lawrence Welk not Dave and Dottie. The Lawrence Welk version is on RUclips.
The toker the line, the closer to Jesus my friends. ~RevPops

I did not know this song was about pot...I still love this song. Great beat.
Happy 4/20 everybody!
The Grateful Dead did it 25 years later? This song came out in 1971, Jerry Garcia died in 1995 so they missed it by a year. Very interesting in any case!
bring them back?
I'm having an experience right now if you know what I'm saying.
What's it like out there? I've never been and I'm afraid to go. What is it like to be high?
Happy 420!

The accordion guy does introduce the song, but it's Lawrence who calls it a "modern spiritual" at the end of the tape.
Happy 4/20 ;)
one toke over the liiiiiine
