I saw this song on the Lawrence Welk Show ever so many years ago. My jaw dropped. I was 13 years old and visiting my grandparents, who never missed the show.
the funniest thing about the Lawrence Welk version of One Toke is that the guy doing the intro obviously knew what a "toke" meant. He is so cracked up he can hardly speak or look into the camera. Poor old LW - purveyor of drug songs.
Lawrence Welk reruns are being shown on Wisconsin Public Television, and I tuned in one night and they did this song. It was hilarious, those vacant happy smiles, singing without an idea of what they were singing about. This wasn't B&S's best song. Rural Space used to be played a lot in the early '70s on the local FM station where I was in Illinois, still one of my all-time favorites, especially When The Truth Finally Comes.
"One Toke Over The Line" was in my head today. I have no clue how it infiltrated my mind, but...Yea! I was singing it as I did my housework, and was amazed I knew the lyrics and harmonies. My husband was amused. Of course, I had to watch y'all! Thanks for making my day!
I woke up this morning with it running through my head! Crazy. I had to immediately find it and listen. So funny about Lawrence Welk, my grandparents and folks never missed it.
I saw that performance on Lawrence Welk my parents were fans I remember I was blown away so much so I was pacing on the floor in disbelief😊. I had my vinyl back then…
Found this 45 when I was in an antique shop with my Dad. I've always loved Hippy Culture. I thought, what a find! Decided to look up to see if these guys were still around... pretty cool stuff!
I saw them when they opened as "surprise guests" for Black Oak Arkansas at the Cowtown Ballroom in Kansas City!! LOVED IT and so did my friends!!! Great video here =)
I had an interesting conversation with someone today about Tom Shipley, and I didn't know about him until today. I live in Rolla, MO, same as him, and learned about his Dodge Dart accident. Also learned he's on the board for a lot of different community projects in our town. Seems like a very nice guy with an interesting history.
So great to find a more recent edition of these amazing musicians singing this song. I remember when it premiered, my local Detroit DJ played the hell out of it on the radio, WRIF. These guys are still fantastic!
My sister and I lived on a Royal Canadian Air Force base in the very far north. But, not that far north, eh? We played this song all the. Great times. The parental units had no idea what it was about, and thought we were getting religious with all the Jesus references. They never did figure out why the basement smelled funny. 😂☮😂
Wait what? I knew about Lawrence Welk, just watched it in fact, but the DEAD did this? Alexa, WTF! A casual reference to this song by a friend on Facebook brought me here, and I'm loving this story. Thank you so much to the poster!
Despite the claim in the video, I am nearly 100% certain the Grateful Dead never played this song (in public, at least). I am 100% certain that it's not on any recording that circulates in trading circles. Help Me Rhonda with the Beach Boys, yes, but no One Toke. People often claim the backing band on the recording was the GD, but apparently it was just Jerry on Oh Mommy.
I was about 28 when this song came out. Gives me chills and Istill love it after all this years. Never did any weed, my poison was a shot of Jack Daniels Black and about three to four beers.
Weeds is still one of my favorite albums. My roommate freshman year in 1971 was also a fan. He says the album cover artist was his HS art teacher. Glad you are still performing!
You guys were some of the bestest of my memories as a kid.. you are ALWAYS welcome in Hawaii on my land.. come on by guys and kick back in the jungle !!! We will feed ya, house ya and make sure u get to toke... lol
To Brewer & Shipley (from Don, 12/8/22, you're the first proof that my idea works. Thanks for recording this 2018 video. Look forward to meeting you sometime. Love, Don
Always associate this song with a late-nite sojourn in April '71 to get a bra from a coed at Dickinson College as part of fraternity pledging tasks. (I think she consented w a little sweet talk)
Well now we know what the missing 18 minutes of the Nixon Tapes was about. Nixon cursing about Lawrence Welk singing about the song going against the war on drugs.🤣😂🤣😂
Lawrence Welk referred to this song as "a modern spiritual" I was a few tokes over the line, Sweet Jesus, when I saw god. I was pretty messed up at the time.
Hello out there all you little nixies (friends of pixies!). It is high noon on this, the 31st, and the calm has entered my dome. I’m home. Rome? Sheet and…(joke)……. “Why do goblins not eat ghosts?”… answer is “cause they taste like sheet”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hippy 2023 highs ya’ll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me Gr8, Grammy loved Lawrence welk
Hey, when you've been covered by Lawrence Welk, you know you're in!
Yeah, even the Beatles never received that honor. Still have my 45.
@@starshiptrooper7670 An' a ONE an' a TWO an' a Blackbird singin; in the dead of niiiiggghhhttt......
Wonnaful wonnaful!😁😁😁
For all time…
They covered just about everything in their intro. I loved it. The Lawrence Welk version is so funny. Thank you for posting this phenomenal song.

We may be old but we love and play REAL music!!! I loved these guys music.

Thats the amazing thing you can see it on reruns and You Tube😂😅😊
This song is the anthem of 4/20.
The harmony is still there...love it!
F***ing Awesome, takes me back a cple days.....

Thanks for taking the time to watch my recording of the many that are available.
Ann Struck, that's exactly what just happened to me, and it landed me here. What a co-inky-dink! 😁🤗👏
I just had the same thing happened to me today that is weird

I loved to sing this song as a child in the 1970s. Now I'm grown up, living in a 420 state... Rock on, everyone!

Rolla, Missouri..
Route 66.
You gotta respect a guy who cares enough about his community to help it.

This song makes me laugh so much and hearing your stories about it made me laugh even more. So great!

The first time I heard this song was about 2 weeks ago on my birthday. Now I’m glad I did.
You made my day OLD hippie ROCK ON
Great story they tell! One of my favorites from my tokin' days.
Back in the day I did my fair share of smok'in. But I still don't know what they mean by one toke "over the line." Help?
@@starshiptrooper7670 It was pretty much about the last toke being one too many.
@@sharonelliott2366 Thank you Sharon. Nice to get an intelligent answer...
Love these guys!!!!!
Thanks for sharing, it is a nice acoustic / etheric body to the performance...
such a different time and place (when song was written) I miss it.

Oh, it gets more interesting than that- Aaron and Nick Carter proposed recording it back in the 90s but got shot down.
Despite the claim in the video, I am nearly 100% certain the Grateful Dead never played this song (in public, at least). Seems like as everlasting as this song is, it would have been higher than #10 on the Billboard charts. One of my favorites from 1971. They got robbed.
It was banned from many stations back in the day. That's probably what kept it from going higher
It wasn’t in NJ. It was quite popular!
I was about 28 when this song came out. Gives me chills and Istill love it after all this years. Never did any weed, my poison was a shot of Jack Daniels Black and about three to four beers.
'Living in Kansas City Mo.' Yeah baby yeah!

I love it when music has a sense of humor.
"it was gospel to us......" LOLz,.

And thank you for the kind words.
Crested Butte, 1974. On the main street at sunset. Not a big gig, but a great one.

Beautiful song. I know it by heart. ❤❤❤
2:20 "It was gospel to us"
That was beautiful, man.............
Thanka ya boys!
Was hoping to hear that 3rd verse
I just listened to their original in 71 I think. They still got it. Imagine now it's legal in a lot of places 😅
Great Song! Either Laugh or Cry!
I saw B & S back in 1970 at the Sports Arena, Atlanta, opened for Quicksilver. Ticket price- $2.50. Joints and pipes passing down the row.
Damn, they're still out there singing this song.
Beautiful
What a sweet intro to an old fave.
These guys should have their own PBS Special.
how cute are they! ❤
Sooo great love this song!!
Blessings! ❤🙏
Love it!
First 45 I ever bought when I was about 12
Hell Yeahhhh 🎶🎶 ❤️
LOVE!
Don't smoke dope! Drink too much! Love the song! Cheers!
Just one more toke !!! over that line
A great story.
Such a cool 😎 song. ✌️🌻
I am! Usually all day! Tom's shoes do look comfy!
I can't believe it's them, time has no mercy.

Excellent
Aaahhh!!! Ancient
They start playing at 4 minutes in.
What was the third verse that was cut?
Well now we know what the missing 18 minutes of the Nixon Tapes was about. Nixon cursing about Lawrence Welk singing about the song going against the war on drugs.🤣😂🤣😂
Dang! I thought you were gonna sing the third verse! What up man? Anyway, great performance, nonetheless.
Go 4 minutes in for the music.
O defeito é ser gospel.
Yes, I'll bet there's been more than a million hits...
Grateful Dead never played One Toke. But Jerry did play on “Oh Mommy”
ff you watch the Welk show the guy who introduces the singers, gives out a couple of coughs, Maybe he did one toke too many! LOL
These days this song could win you the presidency, look a Bill🤫!
Just a beautiful song. I thought the singers on Lawrence Welk did the song justice, as well.
🤟🤟🤟🤘🤘🤘🤘🤣🤣🥰
Lawrence Welk referred to this song as "a modern spiritual" I was a few tokes over the line, Sweet Jesus, when I saw god. I was pretty messed up at the time.
One toke over the line 😄
And i love my Great Meme
Pretty sure they weren't both singing the same song toward the end. Maybe Tom was a little farther over the line than Mike.
Did I miss the ‘missing verse’?
That's just crazy all around, lol
...poor ol' Larry Welk...he had no bloody idee!!!
Tarkio Road is still one of my favorite albums of all times!
...a 'modern day spiritual'...
Hopes 2 get Az, old Az u2

They probably get a script from their doctors for it to help their arthritis!
legal in Missouri now.
@HounDawg Where can I get me some of that ptsd?
The Egg Gassers

Imagine telling your grandma what a toke is
Seriously? Anyone who is a grandmother today would have been in their 20s in the '70s or the '80s. Who from then didn't know what a toke was?
Voices are completely gone.....
Yeah, well, wait until you're their age and tell me how your voice sounds.
Never ever silenced. Great run boys.. TU.
4 decades later tell me will you sound the exact same? Wtf really???
Doesn't sound half bad to me. And I've heard some pretty bad singers ahahahaha.
all singers have their voice quality dropped over the years, but I dont think theirs dropped that much compared to others.
That was easily the most off-key singing I’ve heard from two professional musicians ever. Ouch.
Always hated that damn song, no matter who did it !
wan a full a wan a full turn off a the bubble machine
