I was 13 when I first heard this - it was aired on a children's TV program I recall. It sent me mad - bought the record and played it 1000's of times. I am now 53, and after 40 years I still think this is the best ballad ever written. Incredible song, wonderful artist. God Bless you, John Miles. RIP.
JUST wonderful. The man was just a great songwriter brilliant musician. And we all are going to miss John miles. RIP.
He deserves that stadium to be full of fans around him. He is the most underrated artist in music history.

This is _the_ favourite John Miles song of mine (glasses or no glasses). "The Right to Sing" gives me goosebumps all over, every time I hear it. It's got qualities of an anthem all around.
I'm with you all, Play On is a great great album, a treasure, an all time classic. It should have been huge.

Of all the vocalists who sang for The Alan Parsons Project, John Miles is my favorite. And THAT's saying something because a vocalist had to pretty much be freaking incredible to even make the cut in the first place!

@@uafrankie It came out as a picture disc single in 1983 which featured a microphone surrounded by flames. It was also the final track on his delayed release 'Play On'' which eventually hit the shops in 1983 on EMI with little to no fanfare.

Back in the day, this very much felt like 'Music part 2.' Not that that's a bad thing. It just came a bit too late. I read somewhere that this song went to number 93 in the charts. I almost fell off my seat one sunday night when as a particularly old man, Harry Goon Secombe, sang this song on the 'Highway' TV show. It was a cringeworthy rendition, but hey... at least a great and underrated song got some exposure, albeit in an unlikely way. I always believed that if John's'ready to spread your wings' had been the big single release from 'Play on' back in '83, he'd have hit the charts with that one.
