Aren’t all judges running debtor’s prisons? Aren’t all people trapped in jail, awaiting charges, losing their jobs, their homes, and their lives being held in a debtor’s prison? If the judge owns the prison, that is just smart.

No. Sheriff's Department runs the Jails. The State runs the prisons.
      No.
No it's not, it's a conflict of interest and bars the judge from holding judicial office.
      Try again bot.

I have mixed feelings...Yes, these defendents must pay their fines, not leaving it to the tax payer, but could we not garnish wages and tax returns instead??? That is what happens if court-ordered child support is not paid...

In my area you have to pay traffic fines before you can renew your vehicle tag. Other fines can be collected by court order through employer wage garnishee.

@@morticia3295 I have a question as to what you consider " petty ". Yes, I know that there is a legal definition, but it's just not a petty crime to the victims. What might be considered a petty crime may actually be devastating for the victim. Let's say somebody vandalizes a car and legally the owner can't drive it until it's fixed. They have to use their car insurance and then their premiums go up. Or, if the judge orders fines and restitution, the victim can use the money paid by the convicted party to fix the car and not have to use his car insurance. That way, though it's inconvenient, the victim won't have to pay out of pocket. But if the defendant doesn't pay their fines and restitution, the victim is screwed. Additionally, they may not be able to get to work without a vehicle and have to make other arrangements to get to work. That means they may have to pay for a rideshare or gas for friends or family members to come get them, or they may be at risk for losing their job. This is even more so if the victim does delivery such as for DoorDash or Uber eats, etc. So it's not petty to the person who was the victim.
A personal example is a lawn mower. My husband was mowing the grass one day and nobody else was home. He had to run into use the bathroom but didn't walk the lawn mower back to the shed because he was only going to be gone a few minutes. He got a call while inside the house so talked for a few minutes before he came back out. For clarity, it was a push mower. So it wasn't worth a lot, but when he came out it was missing. Someone either had to be just staking out properties to get it that quickly or had really good timing on their part. This was not a lawn mower that we bought new. My husband bought it for around $20 and worked on it to get it running because we couldn't afford a new mower. I don't know about where you live, but in my town there's ordinances that state the maximum height for how tall your grass can get and other things related to a yard. It's not just about visuals, but sometimes animals can lurk in tall grass, with some being cute little animals like bunnies and others being a lot of snakes. That has happened around here. So the rules are there for a reason, but because the lawn mower is now gone, you can't cut the lawn and you're at risk for getting a citation yourself even though you did file a police report. That puts pressure on the victim in this case to either keep borrowing a family member's lawn mower until you can afford another, which means also additional work going back and forth to pick up a family member's mower. If you don't cut it you are at risk for getting a fine, and/or having to pay for it to the city if the city comes in and cuts the grass because it became too high. In this case the victim would then have to pay again for a crime that was committed against them. Morally, I don't think the victim should be liable for paying a fine if their grass got too high because of an incident like this or if they're disabled or older and are unable to pay someone to cut the grass, but if it's a city-wide ordinance it has to be followed. So again what might be petty to some is very important to others because it can impact their life in terms of time and inconvenience as well as in monetary ways. So the definition of a petty crime here, though there are legal definitions, don't seem all that petty to the victims.

@@rojo1193 i mean thats all extremely unfortunate but it literally happens all the time. Fair or not. The problem arises when tho when on top of $20 lawn mower costs and maybe $200 for your time and trouble but then the courts pile additional fees on whether that be additional "pain and suffering" fines which lets be honestly you dont need $5000 for this example it was inconvenient but not life altering, court costs, and possibly attorney's fees.... so something that should have cost $250-300 is now over $6000 or more. Our justice system is no longer about making the victim whole but now to completely bury the opposition. I work in law, we deal with this constantly and here in Ohio we actually do have cost caps on certain levels of lower impact crimes.
People make mistakes, people are desperate and poor. Poverty makes crimes like these rise, the answer shouldnt necessarily be to throw people deeper into the poverty that drove them to commit the crime in the first place, especially for non-violent crimes.
