I used to record drums with a single condenser over the snare, right above the drummer’s head and a kick mic. Not ideal but you can get a decent sound. Mike Johnston does all his drum lesson videos with a 2 mic setup. Anything is possible.
Something similar we did in 2009. We had only two cheap mics, we tried them both on bass drum and as an overhead (above the drummer). And we recorded some pretty decent demos. Still better than samples. \m/

Love this album personally. The swim riff with the wah trick blow my mind when I was kid and it still work on me. Owever love the massive wall of sound this album as, not like the remaster that sound like you just put of all the fun of the original
I've heard mastering contrasted to mixing like this: mixing is how you get your song to sound good on its own. Mastering is how you get your song to sound good with all the others. (note - this is why putting a Waves L1 on your master bus in a mix session ISN'T mastering) Tonal stuff is really only half of it though. The other half of mastering is getting your music to a distribution-ready form (file format, sample rate, etc), as well as including metadata (artist, composer, album name, etc). Check out iZotope's series "Are You Listening," or read Bob Katz's "Mastering Audio: the Art and Science."

Honestly, the first time i heard Glenn rant about the Clayman re-recording, i thought that he probably just doesn't like it, because they made it sound more modern. Then i actually listend to the re-recording. :D Seriously, was this stuff even mixed at all? It just sounds like all the tracks were left completely raw; only adjusting the levels, no eq, no compression, no nothing. How something like this could be publicly released is absolutely beyond me.....
I only listened to the remasters at first so I didn't know what he was talking about... But damn, listening to the re-recordings made me cringe. Anyone in their bedroom could mix better than this. Also the new vocals feel off.
CLA did the mix and this is a perfect example of why i dislike CLA, but honestly i think it’s just as much the recording engineer’s fault as it was CLA’s
Creative Minds i know cla mixed it, but seriously, this doesn’t sound like a cla mix at all. not sure if he was on drugs or whatever, but the dude usually knows his shit.
@@wesborlandfan9453 does he though? I think he knows certain things, but I never thought he did metal good. Rock, pop (master here), etc sure, but metal? Nope.
To the kid using 2 mics in a small house, I used to use a live mix board, into my 2 channel interface. It allowed me to split the signal for the drums to stereo and get decent recording. Get a couple more mics
The rerecordings on the Clayman 2020 anniversary album lacked much of what made the original album stand out. I was very hyped to see one of my favorite albums of all time get remastered but listening to it felt like a rude slap to the face. I can see what they were trying to go for, but it fell short especially when you compare to the originals. They can do better. I hope the criticisms reach the band and that they take it into consideration if they decide to do this with other albums (please don't). Meanwhile, Dark Tranquility put out the new Phantom Days single today and it sounds AMAZING in every regard.
The comment about the 2i2, I know it's more expensive but I held out for the 8i6 which has 6 analogue inputs and a digital input too. I've not regretted the extra outlay as it has been fantastic and I can add a 8 channel adat at a later date and get 8 more inputs. I'm not a metal head but love your channel, Glenn. Cheers from Scotland
Hey glenn i bought an v3 carvin 50 wattts 6 years ago for 156 dlls it was sitting collecting dust recently i bought an 4x12 acoustic cab i run my metal zone on the effects loops clean channel whit a yamaha rgz612 fkng unbelievable great tone
Regarding the 2-channel drum sound: If there are online 2 mikes available, thats a problem, but if you have hardware mixer & effects, you can hardware mix your drums and record it from the mixer output in 2 channels. It's not the best thing but I've done it to the satisfaction of me and my customers when I started out. Tip here: if possible record the drums last not first, so you can iteratively hardware-mix a played drum region to the rest of the pre-mixed instruments, and when the sound is balanced, then do the actual drum recording. Not a thing you'd want in general, but not impossible either!
Not watched you in a while, looks like you’re keeping the weight off and that’s great. Fantastic informative and entertaining content as usual - even if I’m a bass player that's using Superior Drummer on their band’s mixes and releases.
An answer to Gi Cool about the two inputs and recording real drums. Check out the Yamaha EAD10 drum mic. It sits on your kick drum basically in “die wurst” position. It’s a stereo pair of mic’s and a kick trigger if you want to use some of the kick samples in the unit to help with your kick sound. The two mic’s pickup about a 4-5 foot radius (second floor Tom gets quieter) and sound ok. Not as good as single mic-ing everything and the drummer has to know how to mix themselves. But it is only two outputs. Perfect for the home studio with a 2i2. Check it out if you can. They are a bit pricey though. Hope this helps.
For the guy wanting to do drum recording on a budget I’d say swap the focusrite out for a cheap behringer interface with more inputs. Try and go for a 4 mic setup if you can. Kick, snare and stereo overheads. At least gives a bit more control over the sound and if you can’t afford all the mics at once it can be expanded in the future. Feel like the 2i2 isn’t up to the task of what you need and will end up hamstringing you going forward. Get as many inputs as you can afford or make sure there’s a light pipe input so it can be expanded in the future, even something with cheap preamps will be good enough for a good long time.
Loving this new editing style Glenn!! Been subscribed since 2013 so glad to see you are always working to get better, much love from Wallaceburg ontario!
6:46 If you've only got two inputs and still want to record live drums I recommend focusing on getting a good overhead recording and blending that with sampled shells. A Glyn Johns setup without the kick still does a decent job of capturing the toms and snare, so you'll have a lot of real drums to work with and won't have to rely too heavily on the samples. Cymbals are usually the weakest part of programmed drums, in my opinion, and capturing them well helps a lot. It's also good practice for when you can expand and get more inputs.
The moment i heared Clayman 2020, i right away understood what Glenn was saying all this time. Kinda want to hear his re-recorded version of clayman. Only for the weak, did sound very very good to me although nowhere near the same feel it used to have.
In my opinion, the best example about the bass and a drum that helps the guitar sounds heavier is the super famous song "Zombie", from the Cranberries. Even if not Metal, that song sounds super heavy but, when you listen carefully, the guitar sounds super thin and very scratchy.
Hey Glenn. Like you, I am also getting tired of how digitized and sterile today's metal mixes sound. Everybody sounds the same!! That being said, I am also a bedroom guitarist that uses Superior Drummer 3 and amp sims for my guitars and bass when I write/record. I just do this for fun, but I still really like learning about producing and mixing. My question is: how would you recommend recording songs using modern technology (like sampled drums and amp sims) to get a more "old school" sound? What mixing methods would you use without over-editing the shit out of everything? I have no idea how records were produced back in the 80s and 90s but that might be a cool idea for a segment. Thanks Glenn. Stay safe out there.
Speaking of unique guitar sounds, I was contacted by a US technical death metal band because they loved the guitar sound I made for Fractal Universe's 2nd Album. The dude was in utter shock when I told him a big part of that sound was thanks to a freeware Lepou amp sim from 10 years ago :D
As far as unique guitar tones for their style, Fuming Mouth has a standout guitar tone among all their peers, as well as being heavy as hell highly recommended, its deathcore in the most literal sense death metal with hardcore influences super sick stuff
I’d be interested in hearing a full explanation of why you think the 2020 re-recorded version of “Clayman” sounds worse. The meme you showed begins to explain what you might think, but I’m still curious to know what are the exact reasons you think it’s worse. I think both versions are good, and I actually prefer the newer one mainly because it sounds much cleaner (the instruments blend together but in a way where notes are more easily distinguishable).
I had some of the In Flames new "mix" videos in my feed and listened to it, and it screamed board room marketing level idea from people who had no clue.
I definitely agree that the 5150 and TS9 tone became overused. I recorded all my music (1 ep and 1 album) with a Mooer Micro Preamp US Gold 100 with its built in IR, which is based on a Friedman BE amp, and I boost that pedal with a compressor, and I get a super tight tone with a pretty interesting midrange. Bring back the experimentation! Let's discover some new cool shit!
Yay, I got an answer! Reason I asked, we don't really have those 5150 /w V30s around here, we make do with Peavey/Fender/Marshall/whatever combos. I have gotten some pretty decent tonez with my Valveking 212 and a Rode NT1a. Maybe not that brootalz but nice heavy rock type stuff. Maybe even classic metal. I do prefer that to amp sims and impulses, even though those are way easier to work with. They just make everything sound the same. Which is okay sometimes, but....
I think one of the reasons mixes are becoming more watered down is what people are listening to music on. A lot of people just play out of there phone speakers, or listen on earbuds. If the mix is good and tight it’ll come through the best on those.
in regards to "cookie cutter" tones, nowadays its all plugins, edited, drum tracks and everyone sounds the same now. i see/hear it alot on instagram.. all sounds the same to me
Hey Glenn! Got a question: are there guitar tones you find are bad (or at least questionable) themselves, but sound awesome in the mix? An example that comes to my mind would be the guitar tone on Painkiller (don't get me wrong, it's still one of my favorite albums ever) Cheers from Switzerland
Glenn, have Audio Assault reached out to you about Reamp Studio? With proper EQ and when you blend two amps, it’s incredible. It should be out soon. I’ve got the beta and I’m in love. I’ve tried demos for most amp sims except for Fractal and so far it’s my favorite.
I’ve mixed with tape before in my undergrad. First, you have to spend the $20,000 to get an old studio tape player because no normal tape machine is going to give you a good experience with the amount of self noise most of them have (extra fluff built into the budget for when you inevitably have to get the thing re-capped by shipping it across the country to one of the 4 living people that know how to re-cap an old tape machine). After that you figure out which tape yours is meant to read then find a dealer for that specific tape (assuming one exists) and trust me it’s easier to find someone capable of dealing you weed by the ounce than to find a manufacturer for tapes who won’t absolutely fuck your brains out over a table financially speaking ($150 minimum for a single 17-18 minute reel). Now the best process I’ve seen for using tape in a modern studio is to do all of your mixing in the DAW of choice and use the tape as a glorified print track. Obviously you’re going to need a little bit more flexible I/O solution to get the signal both out and back into the DAW, but if you have a giant pile of infinite money to burn like my audio engineering teacher had, then buy into it! For the rest of us there’s plugins that do the SAME EXACT THING for literally hundredths of the price.
I'm no sound engineer, but a thought for the dude from The Phillipines about recording drums with only 2 mics... If you can, record each part separately. It's a major pain, but it can work. Set up mics and tracks for multiple passes at the same song, i.e. record kick and snare in pass 1, then move the mics and record toms and overheads in pass 2, then room mics in pass 3. Then you can either mix all 3 tracks down, or have them all in your DAW as a part of the overall mix. You just need to play the song the same way 3 times. And don't hit anything in each pass that you don't want recorded. I can't remember what record it was, but I read an article years and years ago about a drummer who recorded his drums separately from his cymbals using a technique like this.

Outtakes?! YES!
I love the mona lisa analogy
Glenn you are my spirit animal.
As far as unique guitar tones for their style, Fuming Mouth has a standout guitar tone among all their peers, as well as being heavy as hell
highly recommended, its deathcore in the most literal sense
death metal with hardcore influences super sick stuff
First time I've tuned in a while, you look completely different! Keep up the weight loss dude you're killin it!
Hell yes to Orange Goblin! Those dudes shred!
I'd love to hear your opinion on Weedeater!
I had some of the In Flames new "mix" videos in my feed and listened to it, and it screamed board room marketing level idea from people who had no clue.
Speaking of speakers. Orange speakers are pretty juicy imo. Played the shit out of my 212, loving it!
The orange loaded, not with vintage 30s
Yup. Interested in that plugin shootout.
in regards to "cookie cutter" tones, nowadays its all plugins, edited, drum tracks and everyone sounds the same now. i see/hear it alot on instagram.. all sounds the same to me
Have you tried the Waves "Scheps Omni Channel" plugin strip? Would love to see how it stacks up with the other favourites.
He has, but I’d love to see it in the mix of those other plugins.
Just checked out that Old Blood album. Really cool stuff🤘
Always listen with your ears
That was the smoothest intro shoutout I’ve ever seen. Respect!
Glenn, you're looking great 👍 Keep up the amazing work.
I was laughing through the whole video!! Thanks Glenn. And yes a comparison video would be cool. \m/ Peace \m/
Hey Glenn! Got a question: are there guitar tones you find are bad (or at least questionable) themselves, but sound awesome in the mix?
An example that comes to my mind would be the guitar tone on Painkiller (don't get me wrong, it's still one of my favorite albums ever)
Cheers from Switzerland
Glen, I love the shootouts. Its all contributes to original tone.
The new side shots are kinda cool.
Thank you for the great videos
Look kids! Proper mic technique!
I would love that DSP shoot out video. It would be really helpful
Glenn, have Audio Assault reached out to you about Reamp Studio? With proper EQ and when you blend two amps, it’s incredible. It should be out soon. I’ve got the beta and I’m in love. I’ve tried demos for most amp sims except for Fractal and so far it’s my favorite.
i really really felt entertained by this
Yes to all kinds of plugin shootouts please
You really did tore them a new one. I was laughing my ass off while walking through the city :)) cheers for all you do and ...Fuck, you, Glen! 😉🤘
Clayman 2020? did you mean Clay[REDACTED] 2020?
Don't change a thing Glenn-give 'em hell!!
saw one of your old videos before this, you were hardly recognizable! good for you Glenn \m/ (stoner metal band here BTW) cheers, FU
