I liked In Flames up to A Sense of Purpose. I know that was well into their pop metal era stuff, but it still felt like a decent album because of some standout tracks.
This EP though... just disappointing. They reinterpreted a lot of the old songs with their more modern style and it actually made me remember why I dislike a lot of modern metal. There's nothing that truly hits you, neither production wise or in the band's playing, nothing that gives you that raw and gritty sound that first made you attracted to metal. It feels like cheap metal songs recorded by session musicians who don't really listen to metal, and they were hired by corporate people to make these songs for commercials to appeal to kids who listen to rock. Just distorted enough to resemble metal but sterile enough to get airplay between sitcoms for the average family.
Sterile. That's really the word. I'm sure there's some who like this modern stuff, but not me. There's something really icky about modern metal production (not all, but a lot of modern metal bands have awfully clean and sterile productions), and you combine that with In Flames' current style and it's not really a good recipe.

What I find most confusing about this EP is simply why Clayman? Normally when a band releases an album that’s been re-recorded or remixed, it’s because the original version really had poor audio quality. Clayman doesn’t.
There should never be a debate on whether or not a release sounds better than the original, but in this case that debate can absolutely be had. The original sounds better.

I looked them up out of curiosity tonight because I used to consider them my #1......pre 2006. Started listening to Bullet Ride and I couldn't even finish it. It is so bad it actually pisses me off. It doesn't sound like In Flames it sounds like a shitty In Flames cover band. It's a fucking insult. Also I'm following your lead. I am NEVER going to look up any new release of theirs again. Hearing that garbage was a slap in the face.

Yes, Anders is trying to be Jonathan Davis. I actually noticed that many, many years ago. His vocal style; his change in fashion style; and even the re-design of the In Flames logo. It's beyond obvious that In Flames has been trying to emulate Korn/nu-metal desperately for nearly 20 years now. It's really fucking pathetic and just weird. In the early 2000s when the band started to get big in the US and they decided to change their style and musical genre, someone should have told them: "Um.... Guys.... Nu-metal popularity died out here. In fact, it's largely mocked. Korn is really not considered cool anymore. Sorry you didn't get the memo. But yeah, you guys are WAY behind when it comes to what's currently popular and trendy."

The early stuff remains my favourite. Namely "The Jester Race" and "Whoracle". The former is aesthetically more epic and raw, but the latter album has better production and song-writing. The original "Clayman" is a great record as well, and contrary to popular belief, I enjoy some of the mid-2000's stuff. "Come Clarity" especially is chock-full of ragin' tunes (need I even mention the ICONIC 'Take This Life'?)

A lot of Clayman 2020 being shit had to do with production. The production killed so much of it. ruclips.net/video/pcqf7OKnHb4/видео.html This video has a different production, and it is actually a lot better than the rerecordings that were released. It isn't better than the original, (Obviously) but it actually makes the rerecordings in my opinion, actually enjoyable. It isn't a perfect mix, but a random internet person did a better job than a guy who does production for a living in a professional studio. I enjoy newer In Flames, except for this, but if they had much better production like in this video, I could enjoy them. (Also I really like Themes And Variations in D-Minor, but with that production, I'd give it a 3/5 instead of a 1.5/5, since I agree with your opinion on the ones they released. Again, not better than the original, but for me, enjoyable, at least, with better production.)
