You and your videos are more informative than anyone I have talked to in this window buying process. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Glad to help.
You have been the most informative source of information on windows. Thanks for your honest and expert guidance.
Thank you for watching
Awesome explainations, thank you from Quebec Canada
If I lived in Houston it would be a no brainer! What a fantastic video. Thank you for making it. You're a true pro.
Jon, thank you for watching and your comment. By the way, we know a lot of great window companies all over the country. You might want to check out JeffsList.com
I’ve been agonising over grids for sometime. Thankyou for this comprehensive breakdown.
watching from Canada! thanks! love your info and authenticity.
Very informative. Thank you!
Thank you for watching
What do you look for when you only want one grid right in the middle when you have a 36x75 window & 36x39 & 36x36.
This channel is great for Marvin info, i love your videos
Thank you for watching
Thank you for sharing helpful informations for layman on windows.
Thank you for watching, I'm glad it was helpful!
I just found your site! Great presentation! I had fun learning about grids! Awesome content and enetertainment!
Thank you for watching!
Great informative video, thank you!
Thanks for watching
Great video! Very informative.
Thank you!
Great Video!! Learned a lot from it. Thanks
Thanks for watching
Thank you so much. I have learned a lot. I wish you were closer! I am in Buffalo, NY.
Thank you for watching
Great video and explanation and wow! Lots of options you offer . We have mostly double hung windows (Marvin exterior clad with interior wood for 30 years now up north in snow country) that have the interior window side removable wood divided grids with metal pointed end clips at every end grid point where it pushes against the wood to hold in place. Cleaning the windows (twice a year when putting screens in the spring and out in the fall) and opening in the summer over the years the windows would hit the wood grids if ever so slightly out of perfect alignment to the window sash and they would break at the joints. (We have lots of 'tinker toy' broken wood grid parts from over the years... held in place in the windows with clear tape, lol. It is what it is... I like the look of divided lights with grids.)
I'd love new windows (ours are leaking now at the glass seal) with between the glass grids ...just for the ease of cleaning , less breakage, and no 'stick on grids'. ( 1" thick grids please in classic 3-4 over 2 style for our old farmhouse)
Though the exterior/ shadow bar/ interior grids you show here look fantastic, there is a lot of area for dirt to settle on from the outside ... and needing to clean each glass section inside and out on multiple windows?! No way. (Well, maybe homeowners in your area hire window cleaners to deal with that fun job... lol) 😉 Thanks for your helpful videos.
Thank you for watching and your comment.
Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge with us! I just got a new job with a dooring/window business and am listening and learning all I can from you for my new career. I want to know more about jambs and brick moulding. I will be assisting contractors and customers with quoting/ordering their door and window needs.
All the best!
what do you do about grids between glass that have fallen out of place
That will require replacing the entire glass unit.
So good, thank you!!
Thank you for watching
Man, this is amazing !! You are a great talker. You should have half a million subscribers :)
Totally, this guy is great!
I'm trying, I'm trying..
Great explanation
Thank you for watching.
I have never seen a better class on window grids. (mutts) As I am too old to buy windows, I am of no value as a customer. However,I still have a great interest in this subject. I love the true historic mutts , such as in Williamsburg Va. I did see one you had out that was close. My 30 year old M&W windows (historic grids) are still so beautiful. The up keep is the killer. From what I have seen on U TUBE I would be scared to buy any newer windows. Again, great education on modern mutts!
Thank you!
As a homeowner who actually enjoys washing the windows both interior and exterior, I don’t prefer grids on the exterior. I’m fine with them in between the glass but when using a squeegee it makes the job at lot harder and slower with grins on the outside of the glass.
I’ve been binge watching your content about windows and one thing I don’t appreciate is I’m in the market for impact windows and I still haven’t found a clip where you explain the anatomy of impact windows
Thank you in advance
Sorry about that... Since we don't sell any I do not have any products to display and discuss.
I like your videos clip.
Thank you for watching.
Very informative! Can grids between glass be mended if one of them looks as if adhesive has failed?
Between the glass cannot be fixed without replacing the entire glass unit. The exterior grids can be replaced if they fail for any reason.
Thank you for the great videos! We'll be building a custom home in Salt Lake City and you have had some great videos to educate us on windows. Know anyone in this area you would recommend? (or buy from you and have you ship?!)
Thank you for watching. We have a great window company near you. Please check out JeffsList.com
Great information. I would like to remove my grids from a few windows to give the home a more modern look. I tried to remove with a flat long blade but the tape is not budging. Is there a way to get the grids off without damaging glass?
You're 90% likely to break the glass. Anytime we do it we anticipate it will break. Is there a bar between panes? If so, you'll still see that.
You might just consider replacing the glass with gridless glass. Call a local glass company and get a bid.
What should be done if you have grids between the glass that have fallen out of place?
Can you do a video with the SDL grid of Amsco Artisan Series? Would love to see that as well!
Absolutely. I'll add that to the list.
Do you know anywhere I can get snap in grids (or removable). I have old house and want the charm of grids. You did a very nice job of explaining all this info. Ty
Try a local lumber yard.
I once saw (long ago) on This Old House where they had a window made to match the original historic look and they glued wood wide mutts to the outside of the glass, and as Norm noted, it looks exactly like the original. Wonder if it was a one of?
That's pretty cool. I think a good cabinet maker should be able to make those awesome.
Thanks for the sharing! Can I just buy some grids to decorate my window? Where can I buy it?
I'm no sure.. have you tried Google or Amazon?
New subscriber here. LOVE the videos. Now, a confession. I work for a big box hardware store in the Millwork dept. Our window selection is certainly limited. My dilemma is that I know little about actual Millwork. Can you recommend a book or online resource that I can use to learn more about all doors and windows?
Paul, thank you for watching and your question. I'm not aware of any books on this subject. Everything I've learned has been by asking questions from our suppliers and spending time in the field.
Please subscribe, hopefully I can be of help.
@@HoustonWindowExperts - the video on reading the NFRC label was such a wealth of info for me.
You also did a video on single hung versus double hung windows which was also informative. Keep in mind that in my big box we sell "our" brand and Pella windows. What little I know (so far) is geared towards those two brands. We fill a niche for people who need low cost windows, and I don't have a problem with that.
I just want to be a more informed salesperson. I'll keep watching (and I have subscribed)
Paul, good for you! You will be very successful by following your heart.
I like how even though you respect that some people want that traditional look, me included, it seems a little ridiculous to have a shadow bar.
Some companies make it with or without the shadow bar. That's totally your choice.
I’m watching from Spain and we have an old stone/brick house and so confused which windows to choose. This helps. But still confusing
I'm sorry.... Please tell me more.
Is there any option to remove the grids from the double pane window (wood)? Thank you
That would be hard for me to answer not knowing the specifics of your window. However, I highly doubt you can remove those grades unless they were built to be removable in the first place. I would contact the manufacturer of your window and ask that question.
Who do you recommend in Atlanta GA that could help with new windows
Thank you for watching. If you email our office, they have a list of people. we may have something in your area. info@houstonwindowexperts.com
My window size is 2.6 x3.6 what grill pattern would look best .I like the 3 bars from top to bottom of the top sash ,but maby my window size is to square not long enough to look good
If it's a fixed window, the three lite option is a good one.
Is it possible to add after-market exterior grids to a GBG window to change the grid color from white to black?
Yes, you could do that. The SDLs are affixed to the glass with a high-strength two-sided tape.
On triple glazed windows with grids, is there two shadow grids between each layer of glass?
No, there's just one. Depending on the manufacturer it may be on the external side or the internal side of the second pane.
Donde lo puedo comprar lo necesito
Do the grids in windows have any imapct on sound propagation/reduction?
If they do, it's so minute that it does not register in the testing.
planning to install windows i am a beginer, nervous, confused, inexperienced, i have a 2 inch on the corner of a window. aluminum frame orig of the house that led me to answer a power saleman to sched an time. and now i am in the 3 day decision. this flix have given a little insight, i am still on bind. because of a conner crack on one of the windows. i feel alumunum windows are better and stronger that the pelle windows and can last over60 years if properly maintained, but the saleman says that virgen vinyl not recycled vinyl is stronger, what do you say. looking forward your comment on this question. thank you. sincerely robert
I'd run from power windows. They are scammers. Contact a local, family business for your best advice. Go see if we have any good window companies we can recommend near you.

Do you just sell the SDL grids without the glass?
You can probably find some at a local window company near you.
Any guide lines for width of grid selection on a SDL? My proposed window Aluminum clad casement that is 33X49 rough opening with 3 lites across and 4 vertical. . 5/8" or 7/8" are my options. Will 7/8" be too much grid? Any considerations like shadow bar alignment etc.?
On a window that narrow, I'd avoid anything more than 3 wide on the grids and I'd keep it to the 5/8" grids.
I'd strongly recommend seeing something in person before proceeding.
@@HoustonWindowExperts I'm replacing a older double hung with a casement and want to maintain the look of divided lites like old window pattern but meet egress. Old double hung is only a couple inches wider.
Gotcha
I just ordered a full house of Andersen large crank Dark Bronze casement windows with a two over two grid in bronze, between the glass. I thought the between the glass was also lending to a modern look, and also they are easier to clean, but now I get the impression that it’s viewed as a cheap window. The grid is a criss cross on each side of the two part window. 🤔
Joelle, I'm sure you will be happy with your new windows. It is "cheaper" to get the grids between the glass but it's very common.
All I'm saying is that the surface grids look more realistic because the low-e coatings do not obstruct the view of the grid.
Thanks for watching and your comment.
I have a rear door with the plastic inserts over the solid window . 3 parts of the insert have broken over time (probably our lab Marley .. lol) We want to delete the inserts & have the solid Payne. What we can’t find is the plastic frame that has no Payne inserts to put back on once we take the screws out & pull the Payne frame out. Where can we find this ? Ty
You can find inserts like that at most big box hardware stores or building supply companies. Thanks for watching!
I'm not sure I understand your question. Can you elaborate?
Do you know who manufactures the unit?
Is it normal for my prairie parimeter grids in my picture windows that are near an entrance door to have alot of play when shutting the door? They don't rattle against the glass but the definitely wiggle like spaghetti.
That's not typical, but it's not unusual either. If I see it at all, it's typically in a really large window where the grids have a very long span to go across. Perhaps the one next to your door is doing that because your wall construction is not extremely sturdy and when you close the door it rattles the window. Could that be the case?
How do I clean between the grid and glass?
If the grids are between the panes of glass, you will not be able to access them. If they are on the surface, they will be glued tight to the surface of the glass and there is no way to reach back in there to clean. Obviously dirt can't get in there either.
TDL is the way, can repair easy yourself. Contractors prefer the other because you're dependemt on them and they screw you. What costs maybe 100 bucks is 1k or more.
How can I get windsor windows in Stockton Kansas?
Please email our office, they may have someone in your area that we can recommend.
info@houstonwindowexperts.com
Can you do a vid on black in black out windows?
I think we have one. It's called Black Window Trends.
Question - obviously I'm shopping for new windows, thus the RUclips education. I was told by my first salesman that vinyl is better than aluminum frame because aluminum conducts heat and damages the impact laminate, causing the window to delaminate quicker. Therefore vinyl is the better window.
In this video you say "if you want to save some money use vinyl" (I'm paraphrasing).
Is there any truth to what salesman #1 said?
Follow up, which is better vinyl or aluminum frame?
Thank you for watching and your question. Salesman #1 must not offer aluminum. Otherwise what they are saying comes from a place of ignorance. I have no idea how aluminum would delaminate.
Vinyl is better in a cold climate. Otherwise, aluminum wins every day.
Is it possible to add this to existing windows?
I believe it would be possible if you put them on the surface of the glass. However, if there's nothing between the glass the serve as a shadow bar then you will be able to see the back side of the opposing grid.
Are the gbg grids able to get removed?
No.. they're sealed between the panes.
Can we buy just the grids and Install them on plain windows?
It is possible but on a double pane window you will see the backside of the tape that holds the grid onto the glass unless you have an internal grid between the panes of glass.
I have been living in my house for 16 yrs and today because of watching all your videos I noticed that we have 4 windows with grids and the rest are just plain windows. I cannot believe that I had not noticed this before. We have 2 windows in the front of the house and they have grids and just off that room there are 2 with grids and they end there. Can u tell me if that is normal operating procedure?
before.
It is normal to see grids on the front and not the rest of the home. If there are grids on the side it's likely because they wanted any room with grids on the front to also have grids in the other window of the same room.
@@HoustonWindowExperts Thank you! That makes sense.
You're welcome
Why are some of my GBG changing color as years pass. Some are the same color as when they were installed and some are darker now.
That's really strange. Is this happening on the same window or do they look different from window to window?
Do some windows get more sun than others?
How do you take out gbs?
Grids between the glass? You can't. You'd need to replace the glass unit but not the window frame itself. I hope this answers your question.
How to remove the internal grids?
You can't
Are you saying that Windows with grids will always cost more vs. Ones without grids? I just had 9 Windows replaced in my very old house built in the 1930's in L.A., CA. They are nothing fancy, vinyl, - retrofit (?), is what the contractor called them. I ordered with grids, but they came w/out grids. They would have taken them back, but I let them install them as the contractor convinced me that the Grids are only esthetic value, don't add more security, etc. But, he claimed that they are actually a better value than the ones with grids (I don't recall the reasons he quoted) & would cost more if I intentionally ordered them that way. Was I bamboozled? Am I due a refund for my grid-less Windows?
I am not aware of any brand of window that cost more for no grids. Think about this, adding materials and labor to any project should increase the cost. Do you agree?
@@HoustonWindowExperts Thank you for your response.
I'm glad to help.
Do you know of an expert like you in Columbus OH?
I think we do. I do not recall off the top of my head. Why don't you go visit JeffsList.com and see?
Thank you for watching.
My grids are plastic tape that has broken between the double pane , now what?
Yikes. Do you know who the manufacturer is?
@@HoustonWindowExperts thanks for answering, no I didn’t see a name, they look original , the house was built in 1979. I was just going to have them replaced, unless there’s a way to get inside the double pane to remove the tape
Unfortunately I don't think there's any way you can fix that. I would consider trying a glass company before I would call window company. Sometimes it last company can just replace the glass instead of having to replace the entire window.
@@HoustonWindowExperts great suggestion, much thanks!
Ugly ? That aluminum True Divided Lite is actually way classier looking than all these Simulated (read “fake”) divide lite (SDL) window sashes that have over built muntins. Who makes the thinnest Looking double paned windows ?
I wouldn't say that they are ugly, if I did please forgive me. There are a lot of choices out there you can even go with single pane laminated glass that gives you the benefits of double pain but with no need for a shadow bar in the middle. The options are endless if the budget is.
I hate grid on Windows. I'm okay with true original ones. But the newer windows with grids I hate. I live above the ocean and I don't want my view blocked by bars. If I wanted that I would have gotten security bars
Exactly
Standard vinyl windows with internal grids are fine for every home. Shadow bars and just more bs to make a 15k job into a 45k job. I mean if they got the money great but if I get to them with a bid, your losing that client.😂
Grids…the Devil’s playground
Yes
What what the model of the Windsor Vinyl window where you like the depth of the Grid?
The Windsor Classic Series.
