Surprisingly, the tape stays on like new. We posted a video of 1-year later that you can find on the channel and it still looks good as new today (a few years later).

How do I explain to the guy doing my annual pressure wash that I need him to skip over the windows and leave them dirty. Lol. Love it. I just built a home and it’s grey painted brick. I love it but think the windows should have been black to match the door. I think this is just what it needs. I know you said maybe not on a new window but I truly believe it will definitely give my new home a pop and curb appeal. We’re in Texas so I’m hoping the tape will hold up. Thanks.

My question is, do you think I could get away with just using the tape? I’m in TN so we get pretty much same weather as you. If so where did you get the tape? Love your videos I believe my windows are vinyl
Not at all, partner! We have another video of 1-year later and the adhesive actually sort of melts against the glass. We are going 2+ years strong and not a single bit of tape peeling with temperatures ranging from about 15 F to 100F.
I use Rust-Oleum 2X paint and primer spray paint it seems to do a real good job. I'm not looking for a showroom quality finish. I'm just looking for an affordable way to make my fading window frames look good.
@@MRGREGSHOWTO it actually turned out great. It was a nice smooth finish. I sprayed it about 8 or so inches back and put on two coats. It looks really good. I used semi gloss and I was really impressed. Rust-Oleum makes some really good spray paint products at a really good price. I didn't pay but 6 dollars and some change for one can and I did two windows with it.
Could I use brush methods for the interior frame, as opposed to spray? I sprayed one of our windows and nearly fainted. Paint went everywhere and the house was consumed with toxic fumes. Will not repeat indoors! What type of paint could I use with foam rollers & fine bristle brushes for the interior (on an aluminum frame)? Any primer you'd recommend? Thanks!
Yikes, partner! Sounds like a bad situation. I would recommend a DTM Acrylic Paint (direct-to-metal). Should not require priming. Just take your time and do your best to prevent the brush strokes. Spraying is the smoothest, but it can be difficult indoors. Please let us know how it turns out!
I also have white windows, but wish they were black. However, mine are vinyl instead of aluminum. I've been told that black paint on vinyl can overheat and cause the vinyl to warp? Is there a work around?
There are lots of black vinyl windows out there and they don't warp. I'm not convinced this is a long-tern fix (the paint may peel in a year or two, or three) but as far as warping, it won't matter.
Hi! Watching up in Canada. Wonder how this tape holds up in the cold. I've got an older colonisl red brick with white mttoned windows with a black trim around them. I've been thinking of trying this. Anyone know how it holds up in the serious cold? Zone 4. Thanks for a great video!
Hey partner! It has held up well in mildly freezing weather, but no prolonged deep freezes. You could slap a piece up to test for next year. So far so good down in the states. Thanks for watching!
Nope, partner! It has held strong for a few years in temperatures ranging from the teens - over 100F. Be sure to check out our 1-year review video for more details.
Hi Greg, I have been told that you cannot paint black on vinyl windows? What kind of paint did you use and did it hold up well? Thanks so much. Great video!
Howdy, partner! My windows are aluminum and we used a mix of standard spray paint and DTM (direct to metal) acrylic. For vinyl, they do sell varieties that have low-heat pigments that don’t run the risk of warping the vinyl because they reflect the heat rather than absorb.
Hey partner! The type of paint will depend partly on whether you have aluminum or vinyl windows. For aluminum, I would recommend a DTM (direct-to-metal) paint. For vinyl, you could probably use an acrylic. Best of luck!
No issue with opening and closing, but that could differ depending on window friction. I would test a small piece and see if you encounter any problems.
Howdy, partner! We are actually pushing 2 years since the initial project and they have not degraded one bit. Here is a link to our 1-year review: ruclips.net/video/8j2k7CS8n4A/видео.html
Hey partner! I have heard that black paint on vinyl windows can cause warping, but no idea if that’s true. I would probably test on one window before I tried on all. DTM acrylic is for metal, so you’ll have to find a paint that does well with vinyl. Good luck!
Hey partner! I did not prep other than cleaning them and they have held up just fine. But it never hurts to sand and prime if you want to go the extra mile. Good luck!
Hi Greg. I want to paint my interior kitchen windows and I love the fact that there is a solution for the grids. I am concerned about painting the latches but we never use them anyway. Would it be ok to do that? Also I am going to have to hand paint because of the way my kitchen windows are configured - Its an old house.. Tips please.
Howdy partner! You can paint the latches, but if you have to open them beware that any tight scraping could mess up the paint. If you aren’t using them, you should be fine. Hand painting will be tough but should work. Long single brush strokes. Or tape very well and use very light coats of spray. Best of luck!
Howdy, partner! We are going on 2 years strong and they still look like new! Here is a video review of the tape after a year: ruclips.net/video/8j2k7CS8n4A/видео.html
Some people are way too critical. This is a very inexpensive way to update an older home. He's only doing the exterior so I'm sure it looks fine unless you are within a few feet. If you don't like how it looks, remove the tape and go a different route. I am looking to paint the interior so I don't think Scotch electrical tape is going to do the trick. Maybe get some flat aluminum bars cut to the correct size and spray paint to match. Seems like any adhesive would be hidden by the muntins on the other side and minimal gaps could be filled. I'd love any other suggestions. There's a site called New Panes Creations but it looks a little pricey to do for a lot of windows.
Well it's black to. So there is no sense on making it look like a showroom finish by sanding all the old paint off, priming it and using a paint sprayer when it's just going to fade in 5 years and you'll have to do it all over again anyhow on the outside.
Hey partner! It’s been well over a year and no issues yet. We have another video where we do a detailed review of one-year later if you want to check it out!
Howdy partner! I’m not a professional painter so I really don’t have any idea what it would cost. I’m sure You Can Too if you want to try it yourself, DIY-style!
Hey partner! I don’t see why not. You may want to test one window first just to make sure it works for your application. Best of luck and thanks for watching!
@@MRGREGSHOWTO I have vinyl window frames too. Which type of paint would you use? Acrylic, oil based? I'm in CA so I have limited paint ingredient options because of "climate change".
@@chellecat247 hey partner! I would ask your local paint store for recommendations. For aluminum you can use DTM (direct to metal) or oil-based. I would think an acrylic would work for you, but best to ask an expert. Thanks for watching!
Hey partner! Mine were aluminum, but I don’t see why not. You may want to test on one window and make sure the sun/heat doesn’t cause any problems. Thanks for watching!
Painting aluminum is fine but please, if any of y'all reading this have vinyl windows, do not just paint them willy nilly like this guy did. They will warp. You can only paint vinyl with a specific UV technology.
@@mmshaw6262go to sherwin Williams or Ben moore. They have vinyl safe colors. Vinyl safe typically means they have no black pigment in them. That will warp your vinyl
Howdy, partner! Mine has been on for a year in temperatures ranging from the low 20s to the high 90s and no issues yet. I’m going to do a video removing some soon to see how it comes off. Stay tuned!
Howdy, partner! I think it would work, but have never tried. They do sell special paint for vinyl that attracts lower levels of heat to prevent warping.
Were those mullions OR muntins on the home? If someone doesn't like the divided window look and it's muntins on one side which are aesthetics, just remove the useless frame. Unfortunately mine are double sided. The grid isn't on the inside or outside. It's in the middle.
Hey partner! You really can’t see it from the inside. If anything it just looks like a shadow. If you are considering I would recommend a little test piece. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Howdy partner! For the video I used a basic spray paint, but when I painted all of the home windows I used Sherwin Williams Pro Industrial DTM Acrylic in an airless sprayer. Good luck!
Great idea if there were no white grids between the panes. I just can't get past the electrical tape. Good idea though for those with a low budget though.
Thanks partner! It is a reversible option as well should the style change. I will say that we have been very surprised that years later the tape looks as fresh as the day it was applied.
Hey partner! If you really try from right up on the window you can see some white at an angle, but you can’t really tell what it is. I’d recommend you do a little test strip at your home before you paint if you’re unsure. Thanks for watching!
I can see my husband changing the window trim black by painting or spray painting but he is too impatient to deal with the tedious taping that part would require my patience. It looks good.
@@MRGREGSHOWTO it does look good, but as an electrician I can contest that electrical tape (will) shrink, it's designed to shrink, the adhesive is not fun to try and remove once exposed to heat like the sun,
Hey partner! You can pop the screen frame out and just spray the whole thing - screen and all. If you use black paint you won’t even see it on black screen. If you want to tape off the screen area you could, but it’s not necessary. Best of luck!
I took all my screens off! I don’t open the windows for air anyway. Gives a much cleaner look and no more gunk gets stuck in between the window and screen!❤
Love this. Thank you. Have you used the tape for inside windows as well? I wish I could paint the tape to match some of my interior window frames that I painted light French gray. But black is still more appealing than white,
Thanks, partner! The tape would certainly work indoors. I have not tried painting the tape, but that may be doable. If you choose to try, check out our video on how to mask French doors (could make it easier). They do sell electrical tape in other colors, so you may be able to find gray. That would certainly look sharp! Best of luck to you and thanks for watching!
You may can buy a durable tape near the gray color you are trying to match. I know my teenaged son used some gray duck tape he paid a few dollars for to repair his driverside window on his vehicle and the same tape has been holding it on for 6 years thru college graduation in hot Texas with no issues even though the car is rarely parked in covered parking. So it is durable and comes in narrow sizes bought from Walmart. Never has been replaced.
This is great! I’m excited to try.. I know this will vary but how many tape roll did you need for your home? I have about 8 mid size windows.. about how many rolls would you recommend? Also which finish did you prefer, the high gloss or semi gloss?
Thanks, partner! I think you would probably be able to get it done with about 3 rolls, depending on window size. The semi gloss is nice, but high gloss has more pop. Really up to you. I like semi gloss slightly more. Best of luck and thanks for watching!
Wondering how this would work on windows that are double hung and are able to “tilt in” and slide up and down? Would the paint seal the window? Or would you run a knife over the seal after paint dries? (Just a thought)
Howdy, partner! The good thing is that if you wanted to return the windows to original you’d just remove the tape and repaint the frames. A little work, but definitely doable. Thanks for watching!
Hey partner! I had never thought of that, but yes it probably would. If you have windows that would be open a lot and that people could see I suppose you could try to paint the inside tracks as well. Good observation and thanks for watching!

Look for peel and stick trim that can be cut with scissors. Only a suggestion for interior.
Thanks, partner! Appreciate you!
Well it's black to. So there is no sense on making it look like a showroom finish by sanding all the old paint off, priming it and using a paint sprayer when it's just going to fade in 5 years and you'll have to do it all over again anyhow on the outside.
How long does the pain last before it chips or fades?
Hey partner! It’s been well over a year and no issues yet. We have another video where we do a detailed review of one-year later if you want to check it out!
How much would you charge for this type of job?
Howdy partner! I’m not a professional painter so I really don’t have any idea what it would cost. I’m sure You Can Too if you want to try it yourself, DIY-style!
Any idea you or you had heard how much would be charge for it?
Can you paint over vinyl frames???
Hey partner! I don’t see why not. You may want to test one window first just to make sure it works for your application. Best of luck and thanks for watching!
@@MRGREGSHOWTO I have vinyl window frames too. Which type of paint would you use? Acrylic, oil based? I'm in CA so I have limited paint ingredient options because of "climate change".
@@chellecat247 hey partner! I would ask your local paint store for recommendations. For aluminum you can use DTM (direct to metal) or oil-based. I would think an acrylic would work for you, but best to ask an expert. Thanks for watching!
Quedó muy bien.
Muchas gracias, amigo!
Will this work on viynl windows?
Hey partner! Mine were aluminum, but I don’t see why not. You may want to test on one window and make sure the sun/heat doesn’t cause any problems. Thanks for watching!
Painting aluminum is fine but please, if any of y'all reading this have vinyl windows, do not just paint them willy nilly like this guy did. They will warp. You can only paint vinyl with a specific UV technology.
How do i know if i have vinyl 🫢
What is the uv technology for the vinyl?
Does it feel like metal or plastic?
@@mmshaw6262vinyl is plastic feeling and aluminum is a metal
@@mmshaw6262go to sherwin Williams or Ben moore. They have vinyl safe colors. Vinyl safe typically means they have no black pigment in them. That will warp your vinyl
where are you located? did your windows warp?
Hey partner! I’m in FL, USA. No warping at all! Thanks for watching.
We used to do the same with the engine light when flipping cars....
Great hack! I was going to paint my car black. Instead I just grabbed a few rolls of super 88 tape and she is good to go.
Great idea, partner! Let us know how it turns out!
🤣🤣
Does the tape weather and fall off?
Howdy, partner! Mine has been on for a year in temperatures ranging from the low 20s to the high 90s and no issues yet. I’m going to do a video removing some soon to see how it comes off. Stay tuned!
How bout vinyl windows?
Howdy, partner! I think it would work, but have never tried. They do sell special paint for vinyl that attracts lower levels of heat to prevent warping.
I new a kid that put duct tape racing stripes on his 74 nova, pretty ghetto just like this
That is awesome! I’ll bet it made the car faster, not to mention impressed the ladies!
Are these vinyl windows?
Nope, partner! These are aluminum, but I’m sure vinyl would work just the same. Thanks for watching!
what's the exterior color of the house?
Hey, partner. The color is Pure White by Sherwin Williams.
This is brilliant! 👏
Thanks, partner!!
Are these windows vinyl? I had read you can’t paint vinyl black, but I want to do badly on my boring white replacement windows.
Hey partner! These windows are aluminum. Not sure what the rules are on vinyl. Best of luck to you!
Were those mullions OR muntins on the home? If someone doesn't like the divided window look and it's muntins on one side which are aesthetics, just remove the useless frame. Unfortunately mine are double sided. The grid isn't on the inside or outside. It's in the middle.
Howdy partner! For my windows, the aluminum is between the glass panes. Best of luck on your project!
What does the tape look like from the inside though?
Hey partner! You really can’t see it from the inside. If anything it just looks like a shadow. If you are considering I would recommend a little test piece. Good luck and thanks for watching!
What kind of paint did you use?
Howdy partner! For the video I used a basic spray paint, but when I painted all of the home windows I used Sherwin Williams Pro Industrial DTM Acrylic in an airless sprayer. Good luck!
Gorgeous
Thanks, partner! The windows came out pretty good too, right?! ☺️
How does it hold up to cleaning?
Pretty good, partner! I haven’t scrubbed it, but does fine with hose and rain. I don’t see any issue with normal cleaning. Good luck!
Great idea if there were no white grids between the panes. I just can't get past the electrical tape. Good idea though for those with a low budget though.
Thanks partner! It is a reversible option as well should the style change. I will say that we have been very surprised that years later the tape looks as fresh as the day it was applied.
Can you still see the white muntin bars at an angle?
Hey partner! If you really try from right up on the window you can see some white at an angle, but you can’t really tell what it is. I’d recommend you do a little test strip at your home before you paint if you’re unsure. Thanks for watching!
yesssss thank you ..
You’re totally welcome, partner!!
I can see my husband changing the window trim black by painting or spray painting but he is too impatient to deal with the tedious taping that part would require my patience. It looks good.
You can too, partner! A little tedious, but not hard at all. Thank you!
Incredible! This video is what I've been looking for! Thanks
You’re welcome, partner! Best of luck to you!
How thick is the tape?
Hey partner! The Super 88 tape is 3/4” wide. Best of luck to you!
Has the tape lasted?
Hey partner! It has been up for about 6 months with no signs of wear. Still looks and sticks perfect!
@@MRGREGSHOWTO it does look good, but as an electrician I can contest that electrical tape (will) shrink, it's designed to shrink, the adhesive is not fun to try and remove once exposed to heat like the sun,
Love it
Thanks, partner!
How did you paint the screen? Did you have to cover the screen area?
Hey partner! You can pop the screen frame out and just spray the whole thing - screen and all. If you use black paint you won’t even see it on black screen. If you want to tape off the screen area you could, but it’s not necessary. Best of luck!
@@MRGREGSHOWTO Great to know, thanks!
Hey partner! I think it would be fine so long as you make a cut at the seal. Good luck!
what happens to the tape when you wash your window? LOL.
LOL partner! No issues yet at all, but will keep you posted.
This is cool but a big problem when you go to resell the home.
Howdy, partner! The good thing is that if you wanted to return the windows to original you’d just remove the tape and repaint the frames. A little work, but definitely doable. Thanks for watching!
Won’t some of the white show when the window is open?
Hey partner! I had never thought of that, but yes it probably would. If you have windows that would be open a lot and that people could see I suppose you could try to paint the inside tracks as well. Good observation and thanks for watching!
Holy H3LL dlude...Thanks
You’re welcome, partner! Good luck on your project!
I’ve been wanting to do this so badly but I have two upstairs windows that have those grids…….. problem solved!!
Awesome partner! Glad we could help!
Good from far, far from good
Or perfect from close, close to perfect?
@@MRGREGSHOWTO exactly! 😁 all jokes aside, it's actually a really good way to make a quick change like you said! Thanks for sharing it it's inspired me to do mine
@@tomw5733 thanks. Amazingly, it’s been a few years and it looks like new. No one has ever been able to tell, even from 5 feet away. You literally have to touch it. Good luck and thanks for chatting!
'Muntins'...? Had to look that up as I've only known them as 'Mullions'! Who knew?!?!
Hey partner! You say tomato and I say tomado! ;)
