  • It's been at least a month since I've uploaded a RUclips video. I filmed a couple DIY fails that didn't make the cut to post, so this one was a much needed DIY WIN!
    I have hated these wood-look vinyl windows since I bought my house a few years ago. Now that I know how easy it was to paint them, I wish I had done it a lot sooner!

      Hey Justin! It's held up so well. I was originally worried about when it got warmer that it would chip when having the windows open and closed so often, but so far nothing has chipped or worn off. The only thing I would change is taping off a bigger area. A few days after I filmed this I wiped the counter down and could tell there was some overspray. Then I went over all the cabinets and wiped them off. It wasn't visible just looking at it, but there was a very thin dusting of overspray. I would cover 2x the area I did, and also cover the floors near it. Not sure why I didn't think about the floors! 🤦‍♀️ It all cleaned up fine, but if you want to avoid any clean up then I'd cover more with plastic.

    Thanks, it does look so much better. I have mahogany brown frames on the inside of the house that are just so dark. So I'm going to have a go a this. They are old windows, way out of warranty so if this works, will save me replacing some of them just for cosmetic reasons. :)

    • @officiallybrittanynicole
      @officiallybrittanynicole  3 года назад

      Good luck!! The only thing that I would have done differently is tape off a lot more space. I didn't notice it until I was cleaning later but there was a very very fine mist of paint that got to places outside of where I had covered. It wasn't even noticable until I wiped it down and saw it on my cloth and it didn't damage or stain anything, but just keep that in mind. Spray paint goes further than you'd think!

    Of course it depends on the location and environment of the vinyl window (meaning which room, exposure to sun, adverse elements etc), but for optimal adhesion, the general rule for painting any vinyl windows REQUIRES giving them a quick sand with fine 200 grit sandpaper to remove any sheen ... then vacuum and clean thoroughly. You really don't want to leave this step out, especially in a kitchen where there is grease and routine heavier cleaning.

    • @officiallybrittanynicole
      @officiallybrittanynicole  Год назад +1

      They have held up great for almost 3 years now. So it doesn't appear to be REQUIRED in my case. I did mention that mine are faux wood look vinyl so there is a texture for the paint to grip to and the vinyl is matte. I've suggested sanding to everyone that has commented with additional questions though.

      I only wanted to paint the really thin part that had the wood design, not the entire inside that is white. That would have been too tedious to tape off to spray. I think doing that by hand makes the most sense with it being such a tiny strip. I did not get to it last spring (honestly totally forgot about it because it's such a tiny spot). I'll be doing it this spring, and might film a follow-up video for everyone as well!

      If I remember to do an update at the right time of day, I will! The camera won't focus well that close with bright light coming in through the windows. It might be easier on a cloudy day.
      The paint looks exactly the same as it did 2 years ago! The texture on my windows will likely be different because my vinyl had a faux wood texture, so it looks like black wood grain. If you have regular smooth vinyl windows then it will look different.

    I would not paint windows if it's under 60F outside. While you may feel warm inside, the cold from the outside will transfer to the window, especially if really cold out and you said it was 3F out, so that window had to be a lot colder than you think. I suggest using a lazer thermometer. If under 60F, wait until they are warmer. 65-70F being most ideal. And aside from a wipe down, did you do any sanding prep or primer? How has the paint held up over time?

    • @officiallybrittanynicole
      @officiallybrittanynicole  3 месяца назад +1

      The window glass was cold, but the vinyl was not. I didn't have any issues with it being too cold. It's been about 3 years and it still looks like it was just done. The windows have been opened and closed a lot - no signs of wear, no scratches, no peeling.
      I never did go back and paint the inside (because I honestly just didn't care enough to spend more time on it). I can't speak to how well that would hold up.
      I didn't sand them because my vinyl is a faux wood-look vinyl and already had a texture to it. If I was painting on smooth vinyl, I probably would have lightly sanded it first.

    Those windows come out, very easily. You should have just taken the double-hung windows out, painted them outside, and then brought them back in.

    The word "satin" does not have a pause between the syllables. It's not "sat in".

      I don't know what you're going through in life, but I certainly hope that making an unnecessarily rude comment on a stranger's video from two years ago made you feel better about yourself.

      It was merely an observation. I wasn't trying to be rude. I'm sorry if you took it that way. Great job on the windows by the way.

      @@malcolmmoffat2108 That sentence makes literally no sense. They have never stuck, chipped, bubbled, or anything. If the windows had been under warranty I wouldn't have done this because it can void a warranty, but that wasn't an issue here. I have no idea what you mean by rebates. But if you can't leave a helpful comment then go do something better with your time. Life is too short for your negativity.
