When I was a semi truck driver, I went through Canada many times. One thing I noticed is the people were more friendly than the US. I became lost while driving my semi truck, and people were helpful in finding my way around. If I was younger I would certainly consider moving to Canada.
I had a man of color get scared during the 70's when I smiled at him and said hello...he told me he could be linched in his own nation for even talking to me... The USA and Canada are not that different. We have only 15% the population of the USA, and so there are fewer of us fighting over resources, making us more friendly and conservative...but increase our numbers to those of the USA and you will find the level of aggression increases with population. We are not all fighting over the limited resources available, water is in abundance but take that away and we would be just as violent as anyone else forced to live where choices are few and resources limited

I live in Canada 🇨🇦 and we love to have visitors and newcomers from around the world ❤. One thing we’ve noticed about visitors is that they are often unprepared for 1) cold winter weather and 2) the vastness of the country. Travelling around inside Canada can mean great distances! If you’re in Toronto, don’t expect to take a drive to Calgary for lunch. That’s comparable to driving from Moscow to Barcelona 😆
You mention not being prepared for the cold winters here, during the 88 Olympics in Calgary the Jamaican bobsledding team came here totally unprepared. I don't even think they had coats at least if the movie 'Cool Runnings' is correct in that.

I'm born Canadian. My family on my dad's side has been in Toronto for over 200 years (mom's only 95 years). I've never lived abroad but I've travelled the world extensively (370 cities, across 40 countries and counting). I love finding out about the places I visit, and love learning about other cultures. My wife is an immigrant and my grade school daughter is bi-cultural and speaks 3 languages fluently, plus one passable. This experience has always made me curious about what others think of Canada, especially those that come to live here for a time or permanently. I've watched at least a dozen RUclipsr channels on the new comer experience. Yulia, yours is one of the best. Snappy delivery and practical advise, with an eyes wide open point of view. I agree with other commenters about store openings and distances. My brother-in-law once wanted to visit the Yukon, while visiting us on a week long visit. I think the only thing you missed was be aware of how large the country is… If your going to Vancouver, Calgary or Banff, realize its a 4-5 hour flight to get to Toronto or Quebec and more to get to the east coast. I know Russians should know this, but its not always apparent to other nationalities. Cheers, interesting content.

I'm a cashier. Handle cash all the time. It DOES rip, if it gets a small rip, that becomes a big rip very fast. You can wash it, but DO NOT dry it. It melts. Leave cash bills on the dashboard on a hot summer day, it melts.

You forgot to mention tipping. There are lots of services you are expected to provide a tip for. If you by a meal for $20, you will be paying $26 or $27 by the time you add the tax and a 15% to 20% tip. Gets quite shocking when you pick up the tab for an expensive meal!
Yes. Like America, Canada’s servers typically make minimum wage so they rely on tips to make a reasonable living. However the minimum wage tends to be higher here than in the US, so perhaps they don’t rely on tips quite as much.
Living in Quebec does not required absolutely to speak french as long as you choose Montreal or close area. You can work english only and also get many choices of english schools. there is big pressure from a portion of the population to protect french, this is why Quebec government is pushing in that direction. In reality a big portion of the population does not care so much, they decided to be bilingual because it was the best choice in actual situation. This said I highly recommend to learn french if you decide to live here, it will just be easier on long term and it is a mark of respect to the local population. If you just visit you still welcome even if you do not speak a french word, population in contact with tourists (even outside of Montreal) normally speak english just enough good to get a nice experience.
Montréal is more flexible for the language at work because of several managers who dont have much respect about the french aspect of the city (the Montréal charter's first article states that its a french-speaking city) and the province... You're right, there's pressure from a major part of the population to enforce the use and respect of french but its nothing that, its also the very own governmental initiative of the provincial leaders. Its far from being accurate to say that a large part of the population doesnt care and decided to be bilingual. A wider portion of the people living here do care about the french aspect of the province. Most people knows english or a basic form of it, but that doesnt mean they live in bilinguality all the time. I am biligual in terms of technicalities, like for commenting on RUclips :), but i live my life in french at 99.9%. For tourism, we can all serve and help visitors in english if they desire so. You're kinda misleading and contradictory when you say early on that its not required to speak french to live in Québec, and couple of lines later, that you strongly recommend of learning it to live here. The best idea would be to just learn it and making effort in regard to its usage. Like you said, its a mark of respect for the population of the province and its heritage, it can only be good.

Great advice Yulia! Make sure the weather you check is for the part of Canada you're travelling to though. It's a big country with completely different weather in each area. The electrical adapters for equipment you plan to bring is a good idea. However note that the voltage used in Canada is 110 vs the 220 volts in most of Europe. So your equipment from home that uses high voltage (kettles etc) will likely not work properly here and you will need to purchase replacements.
Re French: Ontario also requires French in much of the government jobs or in places like parts of South Western Ontario and much of Northern Ontario. Re opening hours are not the hard and fast closing at 5:00 pm. Check on the internet because some stores close at 5:00 but others will be open until 7:00 pm and still others will be open 24/7. But this is a pretty good guide overall.
Open hours are highly variable from province to province. Taking your example, IKEA, in Montreal on a Monday 10am-5:30pm. In Halifax it's 9:30am to 8:00pm

That's right. Here in BC, major malls are open until 9pm typically on Wed-Fri and sometimes Sat (but some things close early on Sat night). Other days they're open until 6 or 7. Large stores like Ikea are open until 9pm most nights except for Sunday and sometimes Saturday. But this advice is good: check before you head out!

Hi, first time watcher and U.S. citizen here! I live in the central plains of the U.S., and we get cold winters here. I own a fur coat, for which I’m grateful, and if I were to visit anywhere in Canada October to April (?), March anyway, I’d bring the fur to wear.
Unless you're goning to Yukon, North West Territories, Nunavut or Nunavik... You won't need that fur coat before late December and surely not later than the first week of March or late February. You can forget it for October, November and April!
There's a thing about shopping malls and stores. Not every province or city will have the same time opening or closing. You'll have to go online and check operational hours. Where you are, maybe everything closes at 5pm. Here in Winnipeg, some malls open at 8am and some at 9am. Then there's week operational hours. Monday to Wednesday even occasionally Thursday, most malls close at 6:00pm where I am. Occasionally Thursday or Friday to Saturday (due to those days being heavy shopping days, also with people getting paid on Thursdays & Fridays) most malls close at 9pm, or occasionally 10pm. Sundays always has the least operational hours. between 10am or 12 noon, to 5, or 6pm
Stores usually only close as early as 5pm on Sundays! The rest of the days of the week the earliest I've seen things close is like 6pm if it's a family business or something, but most big businesses stay open until at least 7pm so that people who get off of work can still come and get anything they need :) at least here in Ontario
Hey Yulia, pretty cool video, and I love your attitude towards Canada. There are a few other important things for foreigners to know. You said check the weather. Absolutely correct - but make sure it is the weather at your destination!! Canada is HUGE! Not quite as big a Russia, of course, but weather in Halifax is not the same as Toronto, or Montreal. Calgary and Vancouver have very different climates. There are over 7000 km of road between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific, so check the weather in the place you are going to be visiting. Also, your point on store hours is good, too. Here in Calgary all the big malls are open late on Thursday, and Friday. Of course at this time of year they are open late every day. We have had many visitors come to see us in Alberta, and they want to take a weekend drive to Toronto or Montreal!!!! That is NOT POSSIBLE!! It takes about 3 days to drive EACH way, and to see anything of those places you need at least a few days there. Maybe your next video can include ‘must see’ places from across the country. I hope you have the chance to go to the Bay of Fundy, Vancouver Island, the Calgary Stampede, Banff and Jasper, Vancouver’s Chinatown, and Prince Edward Island. Maybe someday, I will get the chance to visit Russia!! I know it is bigger than Canada. What do you think are the ‘must see’ places there? I know I would want to see the Winter Palace, the Black Sea beaches, Lake Urial, and the Red Square in Moscow.

Marit, there are lots of winter activities. Skiing, snowboarding, ice skating to name a few. In the cities there are also indoor swimming pools, ice rinks, hockey games, and curling clubs in just about every small town. Christmas is a big thing. All the shopping malls and major stores begin to decorate as soon as Halloween is over - and some even before. I hope you have a great time in Canada.
Another thing is in some places in Canada the wether changes really quickly, is called a chinook, one minute is clear sky’s the nexts is really windy or snowing, can get frustrated some times
To get a higher level view of Canada remember the following. Canada, unlike most countries, is an amalgamation of a group of semi autonomous states. That's why the legal age to purchase alcohol and weed varies state to state. Your drivers license, health card, specific laws are issued and administered by the individual province.
Most people use their debit (or credit) card every time they purchase something ... cash is used less and less often these days. It's just so much more convenient as you don't need to go to the bank to get cash all the time. Personally, I use my phone (Apple Pay).

Not all malls close at 5pm especially not grocery stores. I've lived in many different provinces and currently live in Edmonton and I've visited many malls that close at 9pm from Monday to Friday with reduced hours during the weekend. Many malls drastically cut their hours during the pandemic but they should be back to their usual hours now. Maybe in smaller towns but I've never seen a mall close at 5pm unless it's a weekend or a holiday.
The first thing to know about moving to Canada is you can't simply drive a loaded truck to the border and say you're moving there. You have to go through a process - a process you cannot do at the border. Also note the temperatures she mentions are Celsius temperatures. Be prepared to be in a metric country.

The temperature in Toronto reaches -25 maybe 2 times per winter, not every year. And if you speak about "feels like", it different story. You forgot to mention, that "Beaver Tail" in Canada it's sweet pastry, and not the real beaver's tail.
To get around Canada your going to need a vehicle & drive. We only have public transportation in big cities. To travel around Canada outside of a city. Your going to need to drive. We don't have bus or train travel like in Europe. If u buy a vehicle in a province u need to register & insure it in that province. Buying a vehicle in one province & trying to insure it in a different province. Means the vehicle will have to pass a safety inspection.
Canada and Australia are the two most sought after countries to move to, so be sure you have a degree or something useful to offer the country. It’s not hard if you come from EU or something, but having high qualifications etc makes it easier to get a visa.
Mall/store hours change daily and with holidays. Downtown stores have shorter hours than malls, grocery stores and box stores (like Walmart)…. Those tend to be open longer hours
Each province is different on a few things that you mentioned. Taxes are lowest in Alberta with only 5% being added on to purchases and this is the Federal GST. Another thing is store/mall closing times and lots of malls are opened late on numerous days but it does somewhat depend on the city also.
You can't IRON the new notes. They shrink. You could iron the old linen notes. They smoothed out nicely, didn't shrink, and were easier to handle than the crumpled notes.

Once you drive out of Montreal there are fewer people who speak French especially if it's not a big tourist place like Mont Tremblant. Eastern Townships had a lot of people in customer service who only spoke French.
People usually understand it but because they never practice it, they aren't at ease to speak it. It's mostly older people. And yes even if they do speak it they don't feel the need to speak it just as if we go in calgary, I don't expect people to speak or understand french.

Most of this is very accurate, but as a Canadian, there are a few things I would clarify. Canada is a very big country and there are big differences from province to province. Here in British Columbia, you are much more likely to hear Punjabi or Cantonese than French. On the other hand, this video underestimates the number of Quebeckers who speak French only. According to the 2016 census, it's 50% and I've encountered many people in suburbs of Montreal and Gatineau, plus rural areas, who hardly speak any English at all. Also, except for bilingual New Brunswick, all the Atlantic provinces are overwhelmingly English speaking.
I guess the insurance depends on the province requirement however some countries like Belgium and France are exempted to apply for insurance in the Quebec area. Perhaps, some other countries are exempted in other areas as well.
It's because of the provincial government had some negotiations with France and Belgium to ease tourism. It's a kind of friendship ties with theses countries. Quebec always have strong ties with others french speaking countries.

When I was a semi truck driver, I went through Canada many times. One thing I noticed is the people were more friendly than the US. I became lost while driving my semi truck, and people were helpful in finding my way around.
If I was younger I would certainly consider moving to Canada.
I had a man of color get scared during the 70's when I smiled at him and said hello...he told me he could be linched in his own nation for even talking to me...
The USA and Canada are not that different. We have only 15% the population of the USA, and so there are fewer of us fighting over resources, making us more friendly and conservative...but increase our numbers to those of the USA and you will find the level of aggression increases with population.
We are not all fighting over the limited resources available, water is in abundance but take that away and we would be just as violent as anyone else forced to live where choices are few and resources limited

I live in Canada 🇨🇦 and we love to have visitors and newcomers from around the world ❤. One thing we’ve noticed about visitors is that they are often unprepared for 1) cold winter weather and 2) the vastness of the country. Travelling around inside Canada can mean great distances! If you’re in Toronto, don’t expect to take a drive to Calgary for lunch. That’s comparable to driving from Moscow to Barcelona 😆
You mention not being prepared for the cold winters here, during the 88 Olympics in Calgary the Jamaican bobsledding team came here totally unprepared. I don't even think they had coats at least if the movie 'Cool Runnings' is correct in that.

Most malls in Canada are open way past 5 PM, depends on the day of week! Sunday hours are shorter vs Mon to Sat

I'm born Canadian. My family on my dad's side has been in Toronto for over 200 years (mom's only 95 years). I've never lived abroad but I've travelled the world extensively (370 cities, across 40 countries and counting). I love finding out about the places I visit, and love learning about other cultures. My wife is an immigrant and my grade school daughter is bi-cultural and speaks 3 languages fluently, plus one passable. This experience has always made me curious about what others think of Canada, especially those that come to live here for a time or permanently. I've watched at least a dozen RUclipsr channels on the new comer experience. Yulia, yours is one of the best. Snappy delivery and practical advise, with an eyes wide open point of view. I agree with other commenters about store openings and distances. My brother-in-law once wanted to visit the Yukon, while visiting us on a week long visit. I advised that was not possible... with normal travel methods. Nonetheless, kudos Yulia! I'll check out a few more of your posts. I've liked and subscribed.

I think the only thing you missed was be aware of how large the country is… If your going to Vancouver, Calgary or Banff, realize its a 4-5 hour flight to get to Toronto or Quebec and more to get to the east coast. I know Russians should know this, but its not always apparent to other nationalities. Cheers, interesting content.

You forgot to mention tipping. There are lots of services you are expected to provide a tip for. If you by a meal for $20, you will be paying $26 or $27 by the time you add the tax and a 15% to 20% tip. Gets quite shocking when you pick up the tab for an expensive meal!
Yes. Like America, Canada’s servers typically make minimum wage so they rely on tips to make a reasonable living. However the minimum wage tends to be higher here than in the US, so perhaps they don’t rely on tips quite as much.
This is normal - near 20% tip. In proper managed places, the tips split between all workers. It also nice to tip even if you do the take away.
Living in Quebec does not required absolutely to speak french as long as you choose Montreal or close area. You can work english only and also get many choices of english schools. there is big pressure from a portion of the population to protect french, this is why Quebec government is pushing in that direction. In reality a big portion of the population does not care so much, they decided to be bilingual because it was the best choice in actual situation. This said I highly recommend to learn french if you decide to live here, it will just be easier on long term and it is a mark of respect to the local population. If you just visit you still welcome even if you do not speak a french word, population in contact with tourists (even outside of Montreal) normally speak english just enough good to get a nice experience.
Montréal is more flexible for the language at work because of several managers who dont have much respect about the french aspect of the city (the Montréal charter's first article states that its a french-speaking city) and the province...
You're right, there's pressure from a major part of the population to enforce the use and respect of french but its nothing that, its also the very own governmental initiative of the provincial leaders. Its far from being accurate to say that a large part of the population doesnt care and decided to be bilingual. A wider portion of the people living here do care about the french aspect of the province. Most people knows english or a basic form of it, but that doesnt mean they live in bilinguality all the time. I am biligual in terms of technicalities, like for commenting on RUclips :), but i live my life in french at 99.9%. For tourism, we can all serve and help visitors in english if they desire so.
You're kinda misleading and contradictory when you say early on that its not required to speak french to live in Québec, and couple of lines later, that you strongly recommend of learning it to live here. The best idea would be to just learn it and making effort in regard to its usage. Like you said, its a mark of respect for the population of the province and its heritage, it can only be good.

These fraudsters making such videos are actually into inducement & allurement type of business using the techniques of convincing, confusing and cheating. So better not believe in their tall video stories, else you can fall in their traps.
Great advice Yulia! Make sure the weather you check is for the part of Canada you're travelling to though. It's a big country with completely different weather in each area. The electrical adapters for equipment you plan to bring is a good idea. However note that the voltage used in Canada is 110 vs the 220 volts in most of Europe. So your equipment from home that uses high voltage (kettles etc) will likely not work properly here and you will need to purchase replacements.
Re French: Ontario also requires French in much of the government jobs or in places like parts of South Western Ontario and much of Northern Ontario. Re opening hours are not the hard and fast closing at 5:00 pm. Check on the internet because some stores close at 5:00 but others will be open until 7:00 pm and still others will be open 24/7. But this is a pretty good guide overall.
Open hours are highly variable from province to province. Taking your example, IKEA, in Montreal on a Monday 10am-5:30pm. In Halifax it's 9:30am to 8:00pm

That's right. Here in BC, major malls are open until 9pm typically on Wed-Fri and sometimes Sat (but some things close early on Sat night). Other days they're open until 6 or 7. Large stores like Ikea are open until 9pm most nights except for Sunday and sometimes Saturday. But this advice is good: check before you head out!
Same with Washington when it comes to checking the weather several times a day, and choose an umbrella carefully so as not to create a sail.
Hahahahaha, good point. A lot of people (Canadians especially) think the weather, good or bad, stops at the 49th parallel. The Cascades (& the wet or snowy conditions) don’t stop at the border, the semi desert of eastern Washington continues north, well into the Okanagan…..

Hi, first time watcher and U.S. citizen here! I live in the central plains of the U.S., and we get cold winters here. I own a fur coat, for which I’m grateful, and if I were to visit anywhere in Canada October to April (?), March anyway, I’d bring the fur to wear.
Unless you're goning to Yukon, North West Territories, Nunavut or Nunavik... You won't need that fur coat before late December and surely not later than the first week of March or late February.
You can forget it for October, November and April!
There's a thing about shopping malls and stores. Not every province or city will have the same time opening or closing. You'll have to go online and check operational hours. Where you are, maybe everything closes at 5pm. Here in Winnipeg, some malls open at 8am and some at 9am. Then there's week operational hours. Monday to Wednesday even occasionally Thursday, most malls close at 6:00pm where I am. Occasionally Thursday or Friday to Saturday (due to those days being heavy shopping days, also with people getting paid on Thursdays & Fridays) most malls close at 9pm, or occasionally 10pm. Sundays always has the least operational hours. between 10am or 12 noon, to 5, or 6pm
Upstate, NY (where I live) is very similar climate wise to Ontario and Montreal.
Stores usually only close as early as 5pm on Sundays! The rest of the days of the week the earliest I've seen things close is like 6pm if it's a family business or something, but most big businesses stay open until at least 7pm so that people who get off of work can still come and get anything they need :) at least here in Ontario

Hey Yulia, pretty cool video, and I love your attitude towards Canada. There are a few other important things for foreigners to know. You said check the weather. Absolutely correct - but make sure it is the weather at your destination!! Canada is HUGE! Not quite as big a Russia, of course, but weather in Halifax is not the same as Toronto, or Montreal. Calgary and Vancouver have very different climates. There are over 7000 km of road between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific, so check the weather in the place you are going to be visiting.
Also, your point on store hours is good, too. Here in Calgary all the big malls are open late on Thursday, and Friday. Of course at this time of year they are open late every day.
We have had many visitors come to see us in Alberta, and they want to take a weekend drive to Toronto or Montreal!!!! That is NOT POSSIBLE!! It takes about 3 days to drive EACH way, and to see anything of those places you need at least a few days there.
Maybe your next video can include ‘must see’ places from across the country. I hope you have the chance to go to the Bay of Fundy, Vancouver Island, the Calgary Stampede, Banff and Jasper, Vancouver’s Chinatown, and Prince Edward Island.

Marit, there are lots of winter activities. Skiing, snowboarding, ice skating to name a few. In the cities there are also indoor swimming pools, ice rinks, hockey games, and curling clubs in just about every small town. Christmas is a big thing. All the shopping malls and major stores begin to decorate as soon as Halloween is over - and some even before.

To get a higher level view of Canada remember the following. Canada, unlike most countries, is an amalgamation of a group of semi autonomous states. That's why the legal age to purchase alcohol and weed varies state to state. Your drivers license, health card, specific laws are issued and administered by the individual province.
Most people use their debit (or credit) card every time they purchase something ... cash is used less and less often these days. It's just so much more convenient as you don't need to go to the bank to get cash all the time.
Personally, I use my phone (Apple Pay).

Not all malls close at 5pm especially not grocery stores. I've lived in many different provinces and currently live in Edmonton and I've visited many malls that close at 9pm from Monday to Friday with reduced hours during the weekend. Many malls drastically cut their hours during the pandemic but they should be back to their usual hours now. Maybe in smaller towns but I've never seen a mall close at 5pm unless it's a weekend or a holiday.
The first thing to know about moving to Canada is you can't simply drive a loaded truck to the border and say you're moving there. You have to go through a process - a process you cannot do at the border. Also note the temperatures she mentions are Celsius temperatures. Be prepared to be in a metric country.

To get around Canada your going to need a vehicle & drive. We only have public transportation in big cities. To travel around Canada outside of a city. Your going to need to drive. We don't have bus or train travel like in Europe. If u buy a vehicle in a province u need to register & insure it in that province. Buying a vehicle in one province & trying to insure it in a different province. Means the vehicle will have to pass a safety inspection.

Canada and Australia are the two most sought after countries to move to, so be sure you have a degree or something useful to offer the country.

Each province is different on a few things that you mentioned. Taxes are lowest in Alberta with only 5% being added on to purchases and this is the Federal GST. Another thing is store/mall closing times and lots of malls are opened late on numerous days but it does somewhat depend on the city also.

Once you drive out of Montreal there are fewer people who speak French especially if it's not a big tourist place like Mont Tremblant. Eastern Townships had a lot of people in customer service who only spoke French.
we drove all across Quebec and the only place where people didn't speak French was camping up North. I guess it depends on the people 👀
People usually understand it but because they never practice it, they aren't at ease to speak it. It's mostly older people. And yes even if they do speak it they don't feel the need to speak it just as if we go in calgary, I don't expect people to speak or understand french.

Most of this is very accurate, but as a Canadian, there are a few things I would clarify. Canada is a very big country and there are big differences from province to province. Here in British Columbia, you are much more likely to hear Punjabi or Cantonese than French. On the other hand, this video underestimates the number of Quebeckers who speak French only. According to the 2016 census, it's 50% and I've encountered many people in suburbs of Montreal and Gatineau, plus rural areas, who hardly speak any English at all. Also, except for bilingual New Brunswick, all the Atlantic provinces are overwhelmingly English speaking.

I guess the insurance depends on the province requirement however some countries like Belgium and France are exempted to apply for insurance in the Quebec area. Perhaps, some other countries are exempted in other areas as well.

It's because of the provincial government had some negotiations with France and Belgium to ease tourism. It's a kind of friendship ties with theses countries. Quebec always have strong ties with others french speaking countries.
