Hey mate , there is a fuse you disconnect under the hood. It takes five seconds and stop start function will be disabled once and forever. It is the only permanent fix. I have successfully done it to my equinox
I drive a 2017 Chevy Cruz for work. After I come to a complete stop, I quickly release and reapply the brakes and the car doesn't go into auto-stop. I think it fools the computer into thinking you're just in traffic. You have to do it at every light, but I find it easier... it just becomes reflex after a while..
same here. after a while it becomes second nature and if it does stop a light up pressure on the brake makes it start again without letting the car move.
There's a guy on here posting unhook the hood latch electric wire the wire that shows its locked . But on my 2020 equinox it worked and it stopped the auto start ,but my key fob remote start feature stopped working till I hooked the latch wire backup

I cannot do this on my 2016 Chevy Malibu. I can set it to 2 but if I try to go higher, I get a message that says "shift denied." Now I can shift manually while increasing speed but I have to this manually by pressing the "+." Just like using a clutch but pressing the "+" as needed.
Hey so I tried this morning and it works. But with my 2019 Equinox it only allows me to go to 6 not 8 RPM. Is that ok?! And can I use the hack on highway and freeway driving?!
That is ok, and you can certainly drive in that mode on the highway. If you have any issues with it let me know and I will try to trouble shoot it for you
I am unaware of reason that would prevent you from doing that during winter. That is something that I would ask the service department at your local dealership about. Please let me know if they do in fact find something as I would like to know if there is a reason that is happening. Thank you
Driving in Low gear will not mess up anything. That is what it was put there for. Just make sure that you press the PLUS button the right number of times so you are not driving in first gear. The best way to find out is to press it as many times as you need before the number on the DIC stops increasing. That will let you know how many gears are in your vehicle
So I just got a 2018 equinox and I did this and it was still doing it. Are you supposed to leave it in the "L" mode? Or do you put it back in drive? Doesn't driving in Low burn up your transmission?
Leave it in "L". My 2016 Malibu works this way also. The GM mechanic assured me my trans will shift exactly the same with this technique. You do have to select + to highest gear each time you shift out of manual mode or restart car.
@@manicmurph that would depend on which transmission you have, the 6 speed or the 9 speed, generally the 1.5L engine had the 6 speed and the 2.0L engine had the 9 speed
Yours wouldn't go up to 9 i dont believe, but it should go up to 6. I believe the 14 was a 6 speed manual. I will check into this for you and let you know what I can find out
I own one of these and thought too I would hate it but I now have 20K miles on it and the start/stop feature is really not that big of a deal because it is pretty seamless. Yes, I know it may be considered a stupid EPA thing (yes), which has limited value, but GM has done pretty good job of implementing it. I've learned to modulate the brake a little when approaching a light that is "almost" green, and then it wont shut off. Equally, I approach a light that I know I'll be at for awhile and I'll go to right to the spot I'll be at for a minute and it'll stop once. Engine goes down and I stay there until I simply release pressure on the brake and BAM the thing is running WITHOUT hesitation. I've driven some Nissan's, Toyota's, and Jeeps where the software is so hideous and drive-ability stumbles so maybe that's where the "bad rap" comes from. Again, is it saving the world? No, but some just need to learn better driving habits and their fuel mileage will skyrocket. It operates entirely without driver intervention, doesn't change drive-ability, and doesn't "hurt" anything (other than your pride?) If it were up to me, I would disable it for my style of driving but I know there are places where it may save a minuscule amount. Remember, its all about that inaccurate EPA number on the showroom window. Minuscule changes sell cars - whether real or not.
@@inkey2 They use a whole bunch of parameters when deciding whether to shut off or not. Temp, batt voltage, history, etc so you'll find all sorts of conditions where they just stay running. I've also had them re-start before I release brake pedal when I'm sitting for a while and it needs to charge or circulate the coolant for the heater.
It's the worse design feature I have ever seen on a vehicle. It's absolutely is idiotic. The wear and tear it puts on a vehicle is apparent Why should people change their driving habits for a moronic EPA requirement.
What if you’re parked in a way that you have to put the car in reverse? Do you start out putting the car in L6 then reverse to back out? If so, does it automatically go back to L6 once put in L ? Or, do I have to manually put it back to its highest setting (L6 on my car)? If so, that would take a long time to do after backing out in a parking lot.
I believe that you must first go in reverse and then go to the L position. You can push the + button more times than 6. So when you put it in L just hit the + button to get going until you know you are in L6
So you didn't start the car, how do I know that works? All the newer moldels with start/stop feature should have a backup feature to use a key to start them.
It works on ours.. Dealer told us about it beforehand.. I hate the start stop crap but my Lady Loves the lil truck so thats what she got.. Just seems like you couldnt get outa the way in a hurry if need be. (there is a back up key in the fob and the ignition is under the button) I'll tell ya one thing, that lil truck kicked ass when we had a ft. of snow this month.. I was verry impressed!
PROBLEM WITH THAT, SOME TIMES i GORGET TO PUMP THE NUMBER UP AND i REALIZE THE ENGINE IS SCREAMING BECAUSE i STAYED IN 1 OR FIRST GEAR. NO MATTER HOW I TRY I STILL FORGET SOMETIMES AND I WORRY ABOUT DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION !
This seems crazy to me that the cars are not coming with an on/off button. I have had start stop for years and like it, but all of my vehicles have always had buttons to turn it off. Most of the time I drive with start stop on but there are times (for example when I know I will be needing to turn quickly in high traffic situations) where I don't want my car to auto shut off - even if it costs me mere fractions of a second.
Now if I can just disengage the eco so that I can accelerate more quickly. I have the 2020 myself and hate this cars features. I’ve already had to replace my throttle body at about 70k miles. I will NOT be buying another Chevy. They just don’t make em as good as they used to back in the day.
Chevy did think of this, the starter they have in there is a heavier duty starter than they used to be, I have seen vehicles traded in with over 120k on them and the starter is still good and never replaced, my wife's Malibu has over 62k on it and is still going strong, thats better than I can day for my 01 Ford tarus that had to be changed roughly every 60k
@@ChevroletGuruThank you for informing me , I was worried that the starter would have to be changed in a couple of years. Good info. I bet GM is making a lot more money selling new starters that wear out prematurely. Battery replacement cost is through the roof (300.00) since you need a special AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery.
Actually the frequency at which a starter needs to be replaced has gone up, as they now come with a heavy duty starter in the vehicles. I can say on my 2 personal vehicles I have almost 80k on 1 and the other is approaching 50k and neither have had to have one replaced. If your battery shows 1-2 volts less than what is required start stop does not ingauge then so it doesn't wear your battery down if it is getting older
@@ChevroletGuru That's good news on the starter. My daughter took her car into a local Chevy dealer today as she was having trouble with the start/stop. The power steering was jerking back and forth if she had her tires turned while the start/stop started. The dealer did a battery test to find out that it was getting weak and needed to be replaced. 300.00 for a new battery sounded sky high until I started to read about it and found out that the battery is an AGM which is higher than giraffe balls. Do you know if you can use a normal battery as a replacement? Thank you.
@@rdrodd1799 I would suggest looking for a similar battery at your local auto parts store or a place like Walmart. It sounds bad as I work for a dealer but the batteries are jacked up in price at least around me. When I replaced a battery on one of my older vehicles I saved almost $100 by going to auto zone
@@ChevroletGuru I retired from the car business after 30 years. It was getting too hard to train the young kids in sales anymore. I checked with the Auto Zone and others and the cheapest AGM battery was about 270.00. I just need to find out if you can use a normal battery instead. Seems like if you do and bypass the start/stop function that a normal battery would last. The research that I have come up with is that AGM batteries are the same as RV batteries that are deep cycle to last longer which would make sense if your car is constantly having to restart itself.

What if your sitting in a parking lot for awhile? Mine will just turns off. Is there a way to disable this feature?
@@kevinstyles9442 once the vehicle is put into park the start stop will not engage
@ChevroletGuru well I can sit in a parking lot with my AC on, and then about 20 to 25 minutes, then car will shut itself off. Then I have to restart
@@kevinstyles9442 all makes and models have a time limit that you can sit and idle before the vehicle shuts itself off. That is nothing to do with start stop. And again all newer vehicles made after probably 2015 or later have this feature
@@ChevroletGuru thank you
I'm confused do you have to leave it in that L mode for this to work? once I go into drive or reverse the Auto Stop kicks back on.
Do you know if there is away to permanently by pass it?
ruclips.net/video/rBxw2-JIbVE/видео.html
The most stupid thing Chevy has ever done. And that is a very long list.
Auto Start Stop Technology should have never existed
Not just Chevy, I know of someone who has a new Jeep with this and hates it.
@@cutt1293 also lka. almost caused an accident.
I think the reason why they do that its for emission and gas saver i think specially if you have in traffic... But i was worried about my starter u think it wont worn out fast the starters? hehehehe
Hey mate , there is a fuse you disconnect under the hood. It takes five seconds and stop start function will be disabled once and forever. It is the only permanent fix. I have successfully done it to my equinox
do you have to drive the car in L the whole time?
Yes, once in L6 or L9 it will run just like you were in drive normally
Excellent Thank You for sharing the solution!
Is there a fuse you can pull or will that interfere with othe rfunctions?
I have heard that there is a fuse but it does mess with a few smaller things. I am not 100% on this info as I myself have never tried that
cant you disconnect the cable under the hood
I am unsure on this. I know GM doesn't suggest anything other than the way mentioned other wise run the risk of voiding warranty
Im trying this way too
same here. after a while it becomes second nature and if it does stop a light up pressure on the brake makes it start again without letting the car move.
This is what I do
I do this as well. No telling what unintentional damage is done to the vehicle by driving it in low the majority of the time.
There's a guy on here posting unhook the hood latch electric wire the wire that shows its locked . But on my 2020 equinox it worked and it stopped the auto start ,but my key fob remote start feature stopped working till I hooked the latch wire backup
They really don't like people using work around. It sucks i know, some of these engineers design things that make no sense and we have to deal with it
Thank you so much, didnt even know i could turn it off. I have read that this feature hurts the engine. Doesn't make sense to add it causes a problem fir you later.
THANKS FOR THE INFO
I cannot do this on my 2016 Chevy Malibu. I can set it to 2 but if I try to go higher, I get a message that says "shift denied." Now I can shift manually while increasing speed but I have to this manually by pressing the "+." Just like using a clutch but pressing the "+" as needed.
You should take it to your local dealer and have them look at it. As it should not give you that message
Garber Guys any update on what that error message means? I got the same one when I tried to do this
Do I drive in L after I do this then ?
After you hit the plus button the number of times your speed transmission is. Yes you leave it in L it will shift automatically than
Will you damage the gears by keeping it on Low
No, that is what it was made for, I have driven a 17 Malibu for 6 years and had no issues with it, put over 127k on so far
So leave in it the l9 position and just go?
That is correct
Hey so I tried this morning and it works. But with my 2019 Equinox it only allows me to go to 6 not 8 RPM. Is that ok?! And can I use the hack on highway and freeway driving?!
That is ok, and you can certainly drive in that mode on the highway. If you have any issues with it let me know and I will try to trouble shoot it for you
Your awesome. Thanks so much.
How can I activate back on? On winter didn’t work for me and now summer is coming but my equinox is no doing it anymore
Why ? :/
Thank you guys
I am unaware of reason that would prevent you from doing that during winter. That is something that I would ask the service department at your local dealership about. Please let me know if they do in fact find something as I would like to know if there is a reason that is happening. Thank you
@@ChevroletGuru thank you, I will let you know on my next oil change date👍🏽
Do you drive it in low?
Yes you would leave it in L6 or L9
which vehicles use the A with an arrow around it?
Will driving in low gear mess with the transmission
Yes leave it in L, you will have to do that everytime you start the vehicle
@@ChevroletGuru so do I put it in 6th or 9th in L mode?
@@manicmurph that would depend on which transmission you have, the 6 speed or the 9 speed, generally the 1.5L engine had the 6 speed and the 2.0L engine had the 9 speed
I have a 2014 chevy malibu ltz has auto start I tried to do it with manual but it only goes up to m2. Won't go up to 9
Yours wouldn't go up to 9 i dont believe, but it should go up to 6.
Pls watch how to permanently disable the stop start feature.
ruclips.net/video/rBxw2-JIbVE/видео.html
My 2018 equinox seems to engage the shut off feature only in warmer weather. It doesn't seem to do it in cold weather.
Do I need to drive in L all the time then
Yes you would need to leave it in L for it to bypass the start stop
So you mention you have to do it every time you start the vehicle do you leave it in low or do you switch back to drive then proceed. Thank you
You would need to leave it in low gear
@@ChevroletGuruwould leaving it on low gear cause damage over time
What if you’re parked in a way that you have to put the car in reverse? Do you start out putting the car in L6 then reverse to back out? If so, does it automatically go back to L6 once put in L ? Or, do I have to manually put it back to its highest setting (L6 on my car)? If so, that would take a long time to do after backing out in a parking lot.
I believe that you must first go in reverse and then go to the L position. You can push the + button more times than 6. So when you put it in L just hit the + button to get going until you know you are in L6
@@ChevroletGuru ok, thank you.
Thank you for for “must be in manual mode It works 😀😀
So you didn't start the car, how do I know that works? All the newer moldels with start/stop feature should have a backup feature to use a key to start them.
It works on ours.. Dealer told us about it beforehand.. I hate the start stop crap but my Lady Loves the lil truck so thats what she got.. Just seems like you couldnt get outa the way in a hurry if need be. (there is a back up key in the fob and the ignition is under the button)
I'll tell ya one thing, that lil truck kicked ass when we had a ft. of snow this month.. I was verry impressed!
Also putting the shifter in neutral then back to drive almost like a manual trans . But thank 👍
So do you have to go to L every single time you start the car? Can you go back to Drive without having the Auto Stop reengage?
You have to keep it in L position the entire time. And everytime you start the car
Pls watch how to permanently disable the stop start feature.

Yes some vehicles come with a off/on switch for that.
Unfortunately mine didn't. (2020 Chevy Equinox)...video was helpful..thank you.
Now if I can just disengage the eco so that I can accelerate more quickly. I have the 2020 myself and hate this cars features. I’ve already had to replace my throttle body at about 70k miles. I will NOT be buying another Chevy. They just don’t make em as good as they used to back in the day.
So I’m assuming you drive it in L as well?
That is correct
I thought the Chevy Cruze 2019 with 9 speed auto had a separate button to turn off Stop/Start ? Please advise.....

Will the auto start & stop " shortened the life of the starter???? 🤔
To the best of my knowledge it doesn't hurt the transmission or anything else. I have been doing it on my wife's Malibu for over 3 years now and no harm yet
So, you’ve got to do this each and every time before you start the car for this to work?
One thing that may help. If the ac is set to LO, it will never shut off. Just found this out during a heat wave. If set to 61 and up, start stop will engage. LO stays running
Ok but how do you turn it back on??
You have to do that each time you start the vehicle. It is the only way to engage it
What if U don't have low gear but only have manual 1& 2 ?
Does this void any warranties or damage the vehicle if I were to turn this back on?
No this doesn't void your warranty, it was added just for that reason
Mine has manual instead of low, and it says "shift denied"
If it doesn't show L in the bottom position of the shifter than I am unaware if that will be able to bypass the system
