For those wondering, this song actually dates back to the 1930s and was written by a composer named Samuel Barber. It was originally written for stringed instruments, hence it's original title, "Adagio for Strings". About 30 years later in 1967, Barber arranged it in a choral-arrangement with Latin words from the liturgical mass "Agnus Dei". This is what we're hearing in this video. It is known as "Agnus Dei". In my opinion it is even more beautiful than his original Adagio for Strings. The recording in this video is much faster than the original tempo, but I still think it sounds beautiful.
I remember playing this game when I was about 15 years old and seeing the world burning, hearing this song start and Karen Sajek telling you that you and 60k people in stasis are all that's left and enemies are incoming, it was rough. No other game had ever done that to me by that point in my life, changed what I wanted out of a video game forever more.
+BigBadBampa Perhaps the best space RTS ever made. A masterpiece. Those words from Karan S jet "No one's left, Everything is gone!... Kharak is burning.."
Mega Trit Yes Indeed! Modding Community made great works.. PDS, Homeworld 1&2 enhanced, HW Complex , R.E.A.R.M., HW complex simple, all wonderful mods by the community that improves playability and strategy in vanilla game. Thanks to this wonderful community my favourite RTS is still shining in this universe....
I fell in love with this game when it was released. I have never been without a copy since. Beautiful cinematics, gripping story, unmatched gameplay and just stunning choice in soundtrack. No other game before or since has taken me like the original Homeworld has.
+Big Jay Homeworld and Homeworld 2 are now available on Steam. Both have been updated to work nicely on today's HD-capable PCs. Sadly, Homeworld: Cataclysm was not created by the same development group, and so far they haven't been able to transition it to Steam.
What a hauntingly beautiful and moving piece! The absolute joy that I feel when listening to this piece brings tears to my eyes. It is used in the movie "We Were Soldiers," fittingly, near the end of the movie, while looking at the insane death of men and carnage of battle and war, as if Creators Angels themselves were crying.
I used to love this soundtrack and this game. Bought the game the day of release. 16 years later I'm watching Tenacious D and hear this song and I remember that I've heard this song in a game before. Finally tracked it down and all the memories came flooding back. Kharak is burning 😔
It is the best and mot moving version of Agnus Dei i've ever heard. Hearing this version again after so many years made me reassess my opinion of it after the last time I had heard a version of it (which it was exceedingly irritatingly oversused in the film "Platoon"). When I was 11 years younger (ie 10/11) playing Homeworld for the first time this scene made me cry, which shocked me as I'd really not been taking any notice of classical music at all. Powerful indeed! The Quire of Voyces fyi
This has always been my favorite version of this piece. I'm always amazed that it comes from a video game. And it's slower than some of the orchestral arrangements I've heard. All-around lovely.
Its not just any religious text, Any catholic worth their salt knows just how extremely appropriate this song is for this moment in the game. It is a call to god for mercy, for forgiveness... There could have been no more appropriate a song. you may recognize it by it's english name.... Lamb of God... you who take away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Lamb of God, you who take away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Lamb of God, you who take away the sins of the world, grant us peace. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.
who cares about the catholic meaning? the text is almost meaningless. The beauty lays within the music not the words. The words are found 1000 times in different songs and only in Latin they sound so beautiful
Played the demo back in 99` (when they actually had DECENT demos) for an unhealthy amount of hours. I was blown away! So I bought the game when it came, it was amazing and changed the way I wanted to play RTS-games. The Homeworld series is actually the last RTS-games I really enjoyed and played for real! Now I am looking forward to the remastered versions from Gearbox, and I hope they dont f*ck this up..
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.
I'd agree in other contexts but the pace is perfect for its usage in this game, somehow. Any slower and the unique combination of urgency and poignancy would be lost.
Well... I was rather thinking that better to capture them, so I could keep them in a cell and visit from time to time to torture them and watch them scream. In person. Much better, than just watching some spaceship blowing up...
I had to come find this comment because.... well, I enjoy that dissonance! I listened to the original Agnus Dei earlier and was caught off guard by the solo soprano.

Thank you for those information!
Can confirm. 18 years later and still brings tears to my eyes.

What a beautiful sight

A remake/remaster/redo of the game is coming out on the 25th of this month. Check it out!
I know! Can't wait to see what improvements (if that were even possible, short actual in-game content)
+Big Jay They should really just make a Homeworld 3, I've played them al l and still waiting for 3!

One of Sierra's greatest games and choices of soundtracks
when i played home world for the first time this song made me cry...so moving and powerful
I agree with Imperial. You do not forgive anyone for this type of crime, you make them regret it for every second they have left too live. .
I used to love this soundtrack and this game. Bought the game the day of release. 16 years later I'm watching Tenacious D and hear this song and I remember that I've heard this song in a game before. Finally tracked it down and all the memories came flooding back. Kharak is burning 😔
One of my favorite songs of ALL TIME.. So beautiful..!
This remains, ever, awesome...
Kharak is burning. There's nothing left for us here. Lets go.
Been looking for this for a long time. Thanks for posting it....

The Quire of Voyces fyi
The only upload of this song that doesn't have a long argument between Darwinists and Creationists.
Really one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. Thanks a ton for posting.
A great soundtrack for a great game.

@Miša Brežanac I had no idea the composition was that recent, especially the choral version. I figured it was 18th century.
who cares about the catholic meaning? the text is almost meaningless. The beauty lays within the music not the words. The words are found 1000 times in different songs and only in Latin they sound so beautiful
one of the few songs that can crack my shell

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.

Great soundtrack.

Kharak shall never be forgotten.
Kharak is burning. Everything is gone. We're all that's left.
Божественно
Эта музыка. Она божественна. *_*
I always thought it was from movie Platoon
Well this is clearly Adagio for strings - Choral version.
Adagio for strings is otherwise played with string instruments only.
Well... I was rather thinking that better to capture them, so I could keep them in a cell and visit from time to time to torture them and watch them scream. In person. Much better, than just watching some spaceship blowing up...
They just don't make games like this anymore...
the solo soprano at 1:01 is one halftone too low...cruel
I had to come find this comment because....
well, I enjoy that dissonance! I listened to the original Agnus Dei earlier and was caught off guard by the solo soprano.
Why does this remind me of platoon?
played when William Dafoe was running from the enemy and was shot down
@ryanjurek I love their tone and balance, but I agree that it's way to slow, this piece is absolutely a 10min piece, not 6min.
copy and paste "KkObnNQCMtM&feature=fvw" into search.....this is a sped up version, sounds too quick and "off". Good Game.
You'll regret it as soon as you get to your sister ship.
Welcome to the Garden Of Kadesh.
It needs less noise samples
sorry, but way way too fast.
:'( A tear shed for the American heroes who fought in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
Yeah... what a fail!
this was totally ripped off or some battlestar scenes
Actually. The reboot of BSG (2003) came AFTER Homeword (1999). If anything was inspired from something, Homeworld isnpired BSG!
The BSG writiers actually confirmed that Homeworld inspired them
