NB: Thank you Tessa Dooms, Lynsey Ebony Chutel.
I watched your interview on TV. I am looking forward to reading your book .
I am very interested in My Heritage and decided to make a Family Tree.
I came across MyHaritage . I found family members and I have done a DNA TEST to help complete my Tree.
I am a 53 year old women with adult children, who is still experiencing severe pain from discrimination due to my heritage.
I have never chosen to be coloured, if that is possible. I was born into the “ Coloured Identity “.
People who look like me were and still are treated differently, from other coloureds who are light skinned with green / grey eyes.
If you are dark skinned then you are not coloured.
If your hair doesn’t have a certain texture, you are not coloured.
Should you be dark skinned and a pencil can pass through your hair, then you are not coloured, “ you must be Indian.
Should your hair not pass the pencil test and you are dark skinned, “ oh you definitely not coloured.” You are black.
In my case I am “ not even South African. “ “ You must be a Malawian” I was told ever so rudely by a colleague far younger than myself and my junior. “ If you are coloured, then I am also a coloured.” “ Look at me” { BLACK MALE colleague }
How do you respond to such a statement. I did not choose my ANCESTRY. I am Coloured, it is my identity. I know my ethnicity. I know that my Heritage is of ZULU WOMEN AND BRITISH SETTLER DECENT. BOTH MATERNAL AND PATERNAL.
So my response was, “ being coloured is not about the colour of your skin but the community that you grew up in and your DNA 🧬 .
It was the only thing I could think 🤔 of . Why should I feel attacked for being born a coloured person .
I have experienced many painful and unpleasant situations for the way I look and not Afrikaans speaking. From my fellow coloured people ( who don’t look like me ) as well as other races.
Then I think okay, if I am not good enough for the coloured people, I will be accepted by the Zulu people. No wrong, I am not Zulu enough.
So… from a not coloured enough .
Not black enough .
Not Indian.
Not white.
What am I?
I am A BEAUTIFUL CREATION OF GOD WHO IDENTIFIES AS COLOURED!!!!

Great topic... My sincere hope for all fellow South Africans is that we move towards respecting one another.
Thank you @michaelallan8254 for your comment. I totally agree. 👍
Thank you lady ,for making me proud to be called coloured
Thank you @ninadaniels1017 for your comment. I am happy that someone can benefit from this video, like I did.
@@ninadaniels1017 my dear, at the end of the day , a mixed person is colored, in another word called mulatto
It is seen naturally without telling anyone you're mixed
But it doesn't change the fact that colored is not an identity any individual takes up , literally everyone on earth is mixed : racially, ethnically or tribally
So when we talk about heritage.... a word confusingly stolen as a means to say colored ...
Heritage refers to the cultural traditions, customs, and values passed down through generations, often encompassing aspects like language, religion, and practices.
Ethnicity, on the other hand, relates to shared characteristics among a group, including common ancestry, cultural identity, and sometimes physical traits.
Heritage is about what you inherit culturally, while ethnicity is about group identity and origins.
So colored can't be what you replace as your ethnicity,
Your ethnicity is tied to your kinsmen
That is your identity
From your ethnicity, you come down to your exact tribe and village
P. S
People who can't pinpoint their identity is lost and confuse
To justify being colored as an identity
Thank you for your comment.
When people enquire about your ethnicity, they're not asking you to provide your POLITICAL identity. This type of answer is a cop-out.
Thank you @Van-Kaap for your comment. So as a coloured person, what would be my response? What is my ethnicity?
@@AssiduousZA Coloureds are a proto ethnic group.A multi-generational,multi ethnic group.More a collection rather than a singular item.Like the English.A nation rather than a tribe.Because your identity have been formed during colonialism,it also has the same characteristics as other ethnic groups in a similar position.Take White people who've gone native, like the Afrikaners or white Australians, Canadians, Americans etc. They ALL have a very poorly developed cultural identity(no national costumes, food, heritage of any kind).Slave communities (Coloureds,African Americans etc.)are in a similar position.Except those who've lived in relative isolation(people of the Caribbean,eg). The opportunity exists however to formulate our own cultural richness pro- actively if we so desire.
@@AssiduousZA Depends on which question you'd want to address. Can you identify Coloured identity? What are the characteristics of such an identity? What do you do on heritage day when you're supposed to celebrate your culture?I think we should have a common answer for these questions, and part of our problem is that we don't.
@@vankaapThe South Africans suffer colorism
That statement makes sense. So let’s start somewhere. We start with the uncomfortable truth of the past , conversations with kinds of mix of coloureds. (Meaning whatever ethnicity created that coloured.) To form one identity.
To react towards a label that OTHERS allocate to you is immature.
What matters is that every individual accepts him or her sélf, love and respect his or her own individuality, and be happy ... and go on with life.
It's immature to allow others to define who and what you are.
Most people in SA are stuck in a rut of racial classification that steals their joy of life.
Like perpetual teenagers that suffer from identity crises.
We must grow up in SA!
Thank you @user-rj4dr6bt6m for your comment. We unfortunately cannot deny someone’s lived experiences. I believe knowing who you are is a step towards the healing process. Healing is a process. Let us start somewhere.
This is going to be a topic for a long time, at least for me . 😂. "It's a difficult label to carry" . Especially if you dig deep its origins.
Thank you @Seeta_sa_gauta for your comment. I do believe that you are right there. Hopefully a topic that will be beneficial to all.
Cape Colored do they include both Coloreds from EC & WC then? By the way what about Coloreds from KZN,GP,NC,OFS etc? What is the difference between Cape Malaysian Coloreds than the rest of other's Coloreds? Do the KhoiSan has any link with coloreds or not really?
Cape Malayasian Coloured is a subsection of Coloured. Coloureds in the Western Cape and Northern are basically of Khoi, maleyu, dutch, german, portuguese, phillipino, bantu, french, indian, etc descendant. The further away you get from the Cape Town CBD, the stronger the Khoi DNA heritage because of less mixing. Some of us actually know who our last pure Khoi/San ancestor was.
The Malaysian Coloureds are those that managed to keep their muslim identity.
The Coloureds in KZN, for example, is mostly of Zulu, English, some khoi and Indian descent.
Thank you @richardmzingisinyila4 for your question. I far as I am concerned, anyone and everyone who identifies as coloured is coloured, due to your ancestry and heritage. I hope that I have answered your question.
The Cape Malay Coloured, I believe have Malaysian ethnicity.
Thank you @aalimah16 for your contribution to the community. I appreciate your answer, but I cannot say nah or yay. Hence my DNA Test to answer a few questions.
@@AssiduousZA It was just a generalisation of the potential admixtures. It does not mean every coloured has that combination. Will be looking forward to your result reveal. All of the best... yay!
Cape Colored, ethnically coloured but politically black, other coloreds, griqua etc interesting indeed?
Heritage is what , it should be called when you're racially or ethnically mixed
But your fathers tribe is your identity because you share his last name except you were born out of wedlock then you take up your mother's family identity
Colored makes no sense at the end of the day to be placed on any paperwork
Trying to indirectly creat more divide and rule
Just like the one drop rule in America
A child can be mixed , which in other word is colored or mulatto
But paternal is what should stand
Trevor Noah is mixed but white
Meghan Markle is mixed but white
Tiger woods is mixed but black
Creating another box makes no sense because at the end of the day, they bear their fathers last name and remain in the family with his kinsmen
Except someone proves to me
That theres a colored community where when a colored woman gets married, the colored community becomes her kinsmen and takes the bride price etc
Or comes out Incase of a funeral
If it isnt
The colored concept as a race or tribe will one day die a natural death or keep causing issues in the country
Am just trying to make common sense
@@k-dwanks2481 thank you for your comment.
@Magic_Kayyy take time to educate yourself on matters , not because the government says so
Do you really understand what heritage is ?
Does colored not mean the same thing everywhere?
Does other nation , not have mixed people?
What's the difference between other nations and SA? ... Segregation!
It happened in USA, where then an individual is being grouped and called by their skin tones no matter the mixture in certain regions of USA
You look the skin tone like Meghan Markle... You're called yellowbone
Like Beyonce... Redbone
Like tiger woods.... Melungeon
Like Tina Knowles.... passing as white , etc
But today that stereotypes are gone , including the segregation of being inter racial
You have a last name and that is your identity, except your last name is called colored
Most of this people need to re-educate themselves
Please learn what , Heritage is ?
Ethnicity? , Tribe?, Nationality? , indigenous?, Citizenship? Etc
May God help you people
@@k-dwanks2481 thank you 🙏🏽
Girl, you Zulu, no one can say you, not Zulu, just because you are not speaking Zulu. Duduzane Zuma, a son of Zuma he doesn't speak Zulu but he is Zulu
Thank you @mziwethumbotho33 for accepting me. I do speak Zulu very well. I know both my Zulu and British family down to my 5th generation.
The English came here & started calling Africans coloureds they called themselves Oorlams Afrikaners Ashley Kriel didn't fought to be called a coloured not even Dulcie September Those who identity themselves as Coloureds must let them put it on they id books Because the Khoi , San, Nama & Griekwas who lost they ancestral lands are still fighting for they land & justice The Kallurds Muslim & Christians must stand behind they struggle because they gave them a language & Culture
Thank you @gregvdm9434 for your comment. Unfortunately I don’t know much about the Cape Coloured history. I do however respect everyone else’s opinion and choices.
These so called ignorant political leaders should have learned from Mahatma Ghandi's wisdom. They are so much in confusion by combining economy/politics and reliogion. They should start to choose where they want to belong
Thank you @estellplatt4149
Thank you for your statement. The sense of belonging gives every human being the feeling of security and support. When there is a sense of acceptance, inclusion, and identity for a member of a certain group. It is when an individual can bring their authentic self to work. When employees feel like they don't belong at work, their performance and their personal lives suffer. diversity.cornell.edu/belonging/sense-belonging
The same Mahatma who was racist? Novels nithethe ububhanxa
It's an insult to person call coloured
Thank you @marcusmaggott6 for your comment. I understand how you feel. Though for many including myself it is my identity. Which cannot just be brushed off as an insult. We need acceptance and restoration first before we can say that Coloured no longer exists, just black.
Correction not BLACK , just AFRICAN.
@@AssiduousZAHave you ever heard of the term colorism? This exist in many countries from the same ethnic groups that did the oppression but coloured died due to the death of Anglo-Saxons war of division.
@@AssiduousZAStudy America blacks the FBA. The unity of the coloaiton of colour's created 1 black group to fight colorism. We call them the house N***** and the field N***** but at the end of the day our biological morphology and DNA share the same ethnic culture history. SCIENCE does not lie nor does the global tatics of war but for some reason South Africans never broke the mental slavery.
I stand corrected. Thank you @marcusmaggott6. Going forward we as a nation need to accept that.
Please watch the video coming up, I have educated myself and wish to educate my fellow South African citizens.
