Lost Ark is an isometric action MMORPG from Korea that released in the west in February 2022, after initially releasing in Korea in 2019.
I was obsessed with Lost Ark during its first 2 months of release and rated the game very highly, eventually though I fell out of the daily login routine then Amazon temporarily made it so you couldn’t connect to Lost Ark via a VPN which meant that for quite some time I couldn’t play the game due to my location.
By the time they reallowed VPNs my addiction to the game had ended and I didn’t really feel an urge to jump back into the daily and weekly chores that made up a lot of Lost Arks endgame at the time.
If you’ve never played Lost Ark before a quick TLDR would be that it has the best action combat out of any top down RPG out there, there’s a tonne of horizontal progression to work through, map completion, mounts, skins, storylines, the game has both PVP and PVE content although the PVE end game does seem to be the thing that players enjoy the most and the game is free to play, free to enjoy but you can definitely pay to win.
At this point it’s been almost a year and a half since I played Lost Ark regularly and now I’m feeling the urge to revisit the game, see what’s changed and ultimately see if the game can make me want to stick around.
What do think about Lost Ark in 2023? Is this MMORPG still work playing? what's your best class in lost ark? let me know in the comments below!

That's the name of the game. I dont recommend anyone to play lost ark non-casually. The gameplay cycle the devs use for the game will suck you dry over time. It is basically:
      1) Devs set arbitrary honing goal (like 1490, 1540, 1580, 1600) where it takes a lot of daily-gated effort to get to new content. It's required to access newest content and it's extremely resource intensive and honing gets worse over time. You will be baited by how free and cheap it was at first.
      2) Finally play the content, hopefully you have people to play with who wont flame u. Having 7 friends or finding an active, friendly guild is mandatory to avoid the toxic cesspit of raid-pugging
      3) Use the mats from the raid to upgrade gear to next level which act as a honing soft-reset, then wait for new content
      4) Once new content is out, old honing goals get nerfed by like half 4 months later (-30% resource cost or something), and really-old honing goals get nerfed EXTREMELY hard 8 months later (-80% resource cost or straight up given for free), meaning your effort you put towards current content is constantly being retroactively depreciated.
      5) Repeat: new arbitrary honing goal is set
In this video, he got to 1490 for free. Back in Nov 2022, that would've taken you some blood, sweat, and tears of replaying Vykas and Valtan raids every week to get to just farming gold. To earn gold, you have to raid until you get sick of them, and raiding unfortunately becomes compulsory chore content for something you were supposed to love doing. Now, those raids are obsolete content once new raids come out. Eventually, the new content will become old content and given for free to entice new players to get in, but the new-new content will forever stay ridiculously expensive to hone to. the name of the game is straight-up FOMO and so you should play very casually and wait for honing nerfs unless you want are willing to have your time or money drained from you. If you get bored of the chores, stop doing them and wait for the content you want to reach to get nerfed

    • @SpawnSenpaiowo
      @SpawnSenpaiowo 9 месяцев назад

@@kyuhnfukaikage1283 Vindictus has amazing combat, but I think it's strength lies in the interactivity of its environment - BnS is a much more PvP focused game, and I enjoyed how classes interact and counter one another. It at times almost feels like a game of street fighter or some other more traditional 2d fighting game, where combo's are used in different contexts to do certain things.
Vindi very much has set combo's that are optimal and should be used 90% of the time above others, and at times can feel quite cookie cutter. Very fun to do, but I find most classes lack variety. Still love Vindi though.
As for LA compared to Vindi, the two are very different and so it's hard to compare. I think LA is more responsive and snappy, but lacks the flow that Vindi does. LA has amazing combat but in all honesty I wouldn't recommend the game. LA has amazing core concepts and gameplay, but the progression system is absolute cancer.

The idea of being brand new to this game, being showered with items and systems you've never heard of, let alone how to play your class, and then being given access to endgame content just to be gatekept is actually insane. Nothing about that is good for someone trying the game for the first time. The combat, while easily the highlight of the game is not enough to remedy all the massive issues this game has. Which is why it has been bleeding a ton of its player population over time.

Got 2500 hours in, I quit around early September, the thing that made me quit was just burnout of doing the same shit every week again and again. Same three raids to get your gold of the week. Same weekly/daily activitities... This game was god tier at the start but once you got stuck in end game and had to repeat weekly raids/other activities with often a chance of getting stuck between gates of a legion boss because one guy in the group keeps fucking up, made me burned out. Especially if you have alts at end game too and had to do the same weeklies 5x in a row with the same consequences i mentioned.
Edit: i never had issues with gatekeeping because i was able to experience every raid at release, therefore getting my experience very early. And also, i played a gunlancer (favored class). If i had to introduce this game to a new player i would say to not bother... To much gatekeeping and toxic beheviour going on. This is definately something the devs should be focussing on, cuz new players will never get in if they can never touch a raid... The only way to properly get into this game is find yourself a group of friends/static that is willing to grind with you every week

After 2k hours and playing since launch, I got absolutely burned out. I found myself doing the samething every day and every week. Even with pretty good gear and Roster level I was left out the groups. I could have easily spent 20 or 30 min searching for a group. Most people don't have patience to teach or to try with other players. Besides, the pressure on Legion Raids you don't know is pretty overwhelming with people being very cruel. My joy became gradually a chore. And started being gatekept like new players. I don't regret leaving the game. It was very stressfull at the end.

I remember after 2-3months from the release, I wanted to level-up an alt from the beginning (I had used the pass, at that time). I'm a guy that enjoys the story of the games and the leveling up process, but this was a total disappointment. Until Vern, there were only bots. The game offers passes to skip everything, and go straight to the end game areas; for me this is a huge negative, since there is 0 immersion.

Honestly my biggest issue is just how intimidating the raids are. They are mechanically difficult and you have to memorize many different mechanics in a video before even attempting.
If you're new to the game, it puts a lot of pressure on you to not screw the entire party and cause a wipe. Even when you admit you're new and might need some help, then nobody wants to play with you.
If you dont have a guild and friends to play with then it is a tough game to keep progressing in once you get to the raids.

I enjoyed Lost Ark at launch. I loved the combat. going back to something like Diablo or really any other game as a Mage just felt weak. Skills in this game just feel soo good. But I just didnt care for the daily grind. I found myself hopping on every day to do the daily stuff, but just not wanting to progress the story after because the story is boring compared to dungeons, but because of that, I felt stagnant and bored. Completing things is what gives me motivation. I like completing areas, missions, etc. Grinding dungeons and stuff doesnt do it for me. I was still in T1 when I quit. trying to circle back as a T1 or play a new toon, and things like Guardian Raids are dead. Rarely found matchmaking last time I tried. and just felt like it wasnt worth it trying to upgrade my gear and constantly failing.

Played for a whole year since launch. Goal was to beat Brelshaza/Abrelshud. Once I managed to beat Brelshaza Gate 6, which was one of the most epic gaming moment in my life - the Legion Raid is simply fantastic, especially the soundtrack, Astalgia of Phantasm - , the FOMO (fear of missing out) just overwhelmed me to the point I had to quit, kinda like a task-paralysis of sort. The burnout was simply too much. I didn't even played that much compared to more hardcore players, around 1426 hours, but the chore nature of dailies, which are the main way to progress in the game, made me have enough of it.
I do miss the gameplay, it is just amazing. But the grind/FOMO and the awful community (overall) just keeps me away from it nowadays. Bunch of min/max elitists that don't allow you to join a raid simply because you don't have 1 to 4 percent more DPS thanks to builds diversity. They enforce blindly following the meta. And that DPS difference is not needed to clear the hardest content. Also, I got tired of having to reset a raid simply because a below average player didn't have the skills to run a high risk / high reward skill (Grudge) and died frequently, but still insisted on running it because it was meta., while it absolutely was not mandatory to clear the raid.
At least on hard games like Sekiro, Touhou and Dark Souls I know the reset was my fault. On Lost Ark not only the majority of the time it was someone's elses fault, which isn't an issue in itself since everyone dies eventually, but it was because following the meta to dish out ~4% more DPS (IF the player managed to survive the whole fight that is) was more important than managing to survive "survivable oneshots" to actually learn the fight faster and sooner rather than later beat it with experience.
The elitists play as if they're playing a minimum vitality Dark Souls build. Sure, eventually you'll learn how to perfectly roll every attack, but until then you will just die over and over again until they eventually, after tons of tries, can perfect the fight. On a singleplayer games there's no problem in doing that. On a multiplayer game, where you block other teammates' progression, you can bet it is a major problem.

i'd argue monetization was actually pretty fine, as in while yes, some people did spend a lot of money to be at the top of ilvl at all times, it was far from needed and you could easily stay at the current endgame with multiple characters as long as you played somewhat consistently, not even everyday but just enough to not be wasting too many resteds.
Personally i believe that what ruined the game for most people was the community's EXTREME gate keeping in guild invites and party finder due to build scrutiny as well as burnout from people thinking they had to do every single task on every single character every single day, which wasn't true.

I played my main, and 3alts funneling their mats to my main and joined a guild for the extra honing stuff buy. The amount of grinding (even with the bonus events) at higher levels is mind-blowing, the honing process is slow, the rng is atrocious and it hurts when honing fails. Without putting in some money, you will actually *understand* what gatekeeping means.

Everyone being excited for a new update, new dungeon and new bosses, discovering new things and having to learn the phases while communicating with others(while it had the downsides with toxic people and stuff, it was still fun sometimes.) It was also funny my friends going crazy how much I grinded and I already had like consisting 500 hours or so, playing every single day and not missing one. But sadly that things went downhill so fast, with bots taking over and it becoming more pay to win, the dev abandoning it for a while, no good updates and whatever else. My main problem with Lost Ark, as much as I've loved it, remains that there's only one way to play the game. Being a sweaty legion raider who needs to study advanced mechanics. Without this, there's really nothing you can do in the game after a few weeks of playing. Once you have most of your horizontal progression done, there's really only daily chores and legion raids left. I would love it if they added more ways to get the gear sets, and some more content focused more towards the casual players who don't want to spend tons of hours trying to learn legion raids just to be gatekept for hours trying to get into a group. It's also virtually impossible to play with friends who aren't on your level, cus all you can do is basically one guardian raid and weekly abyssals. Most of my friends don't want to create multiple alts, and they were stumped when they were content-locked so quickly out of doing anything in a group, pretty much. It made several of them quit the game.

If I remember correctly, It'll include every dungeon and raid below Vykas or Clown.
They said it'll help with newbies to train themselves for the endgame content since the combat is getting more and more hardcore, and people are barring out newbies on lower tier content due to the game being a massive alt focused game and older players want to finish those off as quick as possible.
They also stated that they'll never gonna completely make the game to be a single player game, since the devs has said that this game is in the end, a co-op game.
But they felt that they didn't need to push that idea throughout the whole game, but just the main endgame content where co-op will really matter.
So I think everytime a raid is no longer considered an 'endgame content', it'll get a solo mode in the future.

The guides are just too long most of the time. As for the daily stuff hopefully more of it changes, but sadly I don't think you'll see pheons removed maybe someday they'll take them off the cost of ability stones that's really the best case on that. The last thing that would be really nice would be to see some server merges this has happened in the EU servers somewhat but in na we have way too many servers for the amount of players and some merges would really help make the game feel more lively.

  • @Eisi0wns
    @Eisi0wns 11 месяцев назад +2

The game is really great but as you said... the gatekeeping is a huge problem....
and honestly I don't think this can ever be fixed... it's simply a problem that consists within people themselves.
Even if you have strong enough gems, your build is perfectly done, got the raid titles, have unlocked everything in the card system, have high roster level, know all the mechs.... people will ALWAYS find one thing to gatekeep you on.
    missing 10 swiftness? Gatekeep.
You're not strongest DPS meta class? Gatekeep.
Play the other engraving because you enjoy it's playstyle more? Gatekeep.
I've seen as ridiculous scenarios as people gatekeeping you because you come from a specific server (I quote: "1-3 reclear 1540+, no people from Thirain" "reclear no EUW bozos" " "1580+, Asta = insta decline") LMFAO.
The only way you actually won't experience a lot of gatekeeping:
    - Play a support class (Bard/Paladin/Artist), since they are MANDATORY for any latest endgame content
    - find a guild with nice people or have friends who play with you, pugging is gatekeeping nightmare
The game is so good but the people who play it damage the reputation of this game.
Gotta find nice communities or groups to stick with through all the content... levels up your experience massively.
Also... let me add onto that when you started reaching 1600+, the honing RNG system becomes the absolute nightmare it is. You will keep doing honing attempts with a 2-3% chance.... going down further to 1%.

The legion commander raiding is what ultimately got a lot of my friends/people I played with to quit. They got stressed out at failing. Even that made me quit even though I wasn't being targeted by the one or two individuals who'd rage and flame. But I've come back to the game after almost a year of being away, and I decided to check out one of the LFG discords for my region and it's been a bit better. Sucks having to go outside of the game to find people to play with instead of just matchmaking for content that we're meant to repeat so often, but it is fun to do a true learning party. Gate 1 and 2 Brel went by super fast despite having someone who wasn't too interested in learning (he kept trying to say he had to attack instead of doing mechs) and no one showed that they were upset with him. We even did gate 3, which was far harder and managed to clear it. A bit hectic, but fun all the same.
So yeah, I believe there's room for a lot of improvement, but if you can find some people, which I'm sure as a content creator you can, who won't be pissy if things don't go 100% right, it shouldn't be that bad. The game IS fun to play, just tough to learn unless you go out of your way to seek a learning environment. Do agree about the skipping animation on honing and how they can easily fix it. They have that option for a lot of other things now at least.

if the MMO is fun and not driven by grind mechanics they won't mind losing, because losing is part of the game. if losing prohibits acquisition of resources in an allotted time, it's kind of a job. that's a problem most MMOs have.

Very good review in my opinion, as a long term player you end up learning how to aleviate the downsides of the game.
First, playing with friends is a reaaaaally good way to make sure you find groups for end game content, so if you are a new player, either find people willing to help you or a group of new players to learn the game with.
If you like being a PuG player and want to remain alone (just like I did for 3000 hours of my 3300 hours playtime), find parties that are learning or reclearing with your degree of knowledge, you can't expect to enter a group who cleared the raid 100 times when it is your 4th.
Whenever I see a group asking for help to clear a content it fills quite quickly, people on the game (me included) are willing to help, they just don't like when people fuck up the runs that are supposed to be quick. Just don't be the guy that fucks up the mechanic 10 times in a raid and doesn't say anything in chat, we see you :D It's ok to fail sometimes, we all do, and it is also ok to learn, we all went through this. If you are unsure of your skills, create learning parties, once you feel good enough, find reclear parties !
When it comes to the questing, it is as boring as any MMO can get when we don't follow the storyline, I know it isn't for everyone, but giving interest to the lore and universe of the game makes it way more enjoyable in every aspects.
The RNG is in fact boring but one day, as I was about to quit for not upgrading my weapon quality after putting more than 200k gold on it, a friend told me "set up a price you are willing to put into it before you try, if it doesn't work, just come back to it later". Everything is easier since then, every time I feel like I am out of luck I just stop trying and I come back to it later (unless I really need to get something for whatever reason but it is quite rare).
Anyways, LoA endgame content is in fact stressful to learn but just dive into it with learning parties, there's no pressure there, you are here to learn. We all went through that. Just don't sneak into reclear parties if you have no idea of what you're doing, and everything will be just fine x)
To me, the real issue with the game is the lack of "chill" content, LoA is known for its challenging PvE endgame but I think adding more content for casual players to enjoy would be awesome just so the playerbase gets more creative and starts doing more fanarts and all that kind of things. I think it is an important part of an MMO and Lost Ark lacks of it a little.

as a player who start pretty late in the game (doing mi first playthrough from lvl 1-50 when vykas hard was latest raid) but plays it consistenly till the day with no fomo problems or something else the only recomendation i can give to new players are this:
    1) DONT BE AFRAID TO TALK WITH OTHERS xD i know its sounds dumb but LA its an MMO, a social game where finding people to play its fundamental, find a guild that has something in common with you. Usually there are people willing to teach some raids in "Learning parties"
    2) Be willing to spend time on learning the game cores mechanichs. as the video says now new players are put directly into endgame so their exposure to the early concepts of mechanics in this game (like tier 1 and 2 raids) its 0 so if you dont want to get frustrated and make other people frustrated learn basic stuff like staggers check and stagger in general, destruccion, counters, frontal and back atacks so when you are in new raids you hear stuff like "in 102x theres a stagger check" you know what it means and what to do. A lot of new players enters the game expecting other to carry and they just want to mush some buttons while playing (its not a bad if you are going to be chill but in this game teamwork its pretty necesary especially in latestcontent)
    3) (optional) Dont be a metachaser, in my experience everyone who seeks the best class in the game ends up changing main due to balancepatchs xd
    4) Before creating a new character SEARCH THE GAMEPLAY OF IT, sadly the preview in lost ark character creation its pretty far from content reality it shows the most pretty visual skills that not always are the ones that you are going to use or see in any guides. So if you want to know how 1 class plays in particular search in YT "CLASS X brelshaza raid gameplay" (for example) and see for yourself, even if you dont understand everything thats happening at least you are seeing real gameplay. Why this its important because some benefits like powerpasses and Mokoko express events are locked in the character you used it so if you regrets your decision you gets fucked xD
i dont think anything else on the top of my mind to says, srry for the giant text and the basic english its not my native language. If anyone wants to ask something feel free to ask im not an expert but in the server i play people were really kind to me and make me enjoy the game a lot so i want to give back the same uwu
currently im playing on South America Arthetine server. (remember you can do raids with other players from other servers but not other players from other REGIONS)

i remember redownloading the game and i instantly thought fuck that. I thought about the hours trying to learn new mechanics, get toxic groups, trying to find pugs and getting decline spammed... hard pass thanks. My immediate feeling was that the game is not designed for the average person, so the average person likely won't play it.
When the first thing you're met with is a one time redeemable pass, it sort of feels generous but you're immediately presented with a tough choice where you need to actually know what you're doing, sort of at a time when you're least in the know.
It also reminded me that if you want to play at a f2p level, you have no real agency in the game. I didn't get the vibes that the pay to win gear bullshit had gone, meaning i knew that i'd hit another hard wall eventually, and i'd be waiting on the generosity of the devs to allow me to progress again with another future pass, leaving me with a feeling of "why do I actually bother".
Perhaps much of that is unfounded but when you've been burned pretty hard, and the first thing you're met with is a million ways to spend money, you can't help but feel like you're constantly being guided by dark patterns to waste your time so you're encouraged to spend it. Yeah, no thanks. I really don't get the vibe that i'm coming into an online world to hang out and enjoy myself, I get the feeling that i'm being funnelled through a rat maze and I just can't shake that.

The P2W only really applies to the MVP board at the end of a fight, IMO, or access the hardest content day 1, which the game doesn't force you to do (i.e. I still can't do Akkan Hard, but I won't be "late" for the next raid release by only doing Normal mode). With the amount of free passes and mats the game gives you, and if you are at least a semi-regular player, you'll reach the current content quickly and get gatekept only by toxic groups that you don't want to be in anyway. Find a group to play with that has the same goals and pace as you do, and those issues are less prominent.

To be accepted into latest content, you have to be a certain item level(honing), have level 8-9 gems, have title (10x clears), and have full level 3 set (lots of Kayangel clears). That means an insane amount of time playing just to get in a party to try the dungeon for the first time.

Lost ark is no exception. My first raids, I went in ''blind'' , which is how it was intended to be experienced I believe.
Whenver i watch the koreas prog a new raid for the first time, i share the excitement of dying a thousand times but learning something each time. It's exhilirating.
I would like to see more practice modes ( they've added some, but not for every raid / every mechanic ) because raid anxiety is a real thing.
People feel all this pressure to know all this stuff but they were never meant to have to know anything more than what the game tells you. Some mechanics are meant to be puzzles. The pleasure is not in the answer, but finding it rather.

My advice : Unless you don't mind the never ending daily and weekly extremely repetitive grinds like nearly every other Korean MMO out there, then stay clear of this one. It has the best combat but it also has the worst monetization and the more you reach higher gear levels, the more apparent it becomes that Lost Ark wants you to either play a single class for your entire time playing the game, or wants you to grind 24/7 with every single one of your characters to keep up with the absurd requirements and extreme RNG.
Try it out, but don't expect much because at the end of the day this game isn't made for the casual players but for the top 0.1% super big spenders.

      @Scyths1 11 месяцев назад +2

@@windtaker11 -- It's not like that. What casual players will struggle doing is enjoying the last few content with multiple classes. But here is my big warning to you : Don't ever have a thought like "Hmm that class looks cool, should I try it out?". Just don't, because it'll make you quit the game faster than anything else. Paying makes your alts be on par with your main or very close to, that's all it does. It makes you enjoy more classes and you're not stuck with one. That is of course if you don't mind doing Chaos Dungeons, Guardians raids and all the other daily and weekly grinds with every single one of your characters to try to get gear levels on your alts.

I was interested in playing and raiding in this game until I saw a video of a 40-minute fight with countless phases, where one mistake made by ONE player in all those 40 min can get you wiped and start over and I said nope, not for me. I can't even handle wow boss fights sometimes doing the same rotation for 5-10 minutes without getting bored of repeating mechanics and perform so flawlessly that I would totally give up doing it for 40 and wiping the group.

I haven't played in forever, but I feel this, it's the reason I quit. The amount of times I got chewed out for failing a mechanic instead of anyone helping me understand it was insane. I had so many groups that would just vote to abandon as soon as the group wiped, or even as soon as a single player died. It made it incredibly difficult to learn anything, and made matchmaking incredibly stressful...
And this was near launch, when you'd think people would be more open to people learning, so I can't imagine how bad the gatekeeping is now. It is legitimately the only thing that keeps me from playing it again, which pains me a lot, because I LOVE the combat and the boss encounters.

Day 0 player here. Still playing on and off. Would love less RNG in honing, more material gains, and continued reduction in “homework” and single person Raid wipes (make the game more new player friendly).

Deathboi523 has insanely good guides on all the updated fights! Cannot recommend him enough. I was a returning player(quit after argos 1380ish). His guides helped me in the past 2 weeks to clear everything including Brel g3. I’m 1520 now making loads of new friends having a great time. Sure some raids wipe but there’s plenty of good ppl around that don’t complain after 1-2 wipes. Good to see you’re in the same boat!

I tried getting back into this game a couple months ago, but the amount of work just 'qualify' for raids was just too daunting. If I have to fight my way past gatekeeping and RNG just to attempt a raid, I don't even feel like I'm playing the game.
