- I Was spearfishing with a buddy of mine when a wave pushed a Portuguese Man O’ War right over my head. I didn’t even see it, but immediately felt the tentacles on my neck and it sent me into a world of pain. Soon as I lifted my head out of the water I felt it push up against my lips and cheeks and the tentacles latched on to my mask and neck. Luckily my boy managed to grab it off of my face (you can still see it floating in the background) and i was still able to swim to shore where paramedics soon met me and sprayed me down with vinegar. Never dive alone!
As a portuguese i apologise for this man o wars behaviour

No more dangerous than in the surf right on shore.

That's really crazy. Makes me feel like I'd never want to swim in waters off the Florida coasts. And seeing that Man O' War next to you was weird. Man O' Wars just travel the currents and the wind. Theoretically you could find one anywhere but they prefer warmer waters
They’re in the Pacific Ocean too bro you might want to stay away from oceans in general if you don’t like these guys

I got really badly stung by one when I was a little kid. Wrapped around one of my ankles and sprawled over most of my torso. I legitly thought I was gonna die. The initial sting felt like electrocution but then I remember it just feeling like I was on fire for the next hour or so. Then I got really badly sick the next week. This guy is lucky he had a wetsuit on that prevented more contact with the tentacles.
The jellyfish has a good eye. The man does look Portuguese.
Why people swim in that water is beyond me. Aggressive sharks, jellies. Sounds so inviting

And I told my kids that and we looked at em and admired them from a far. I just decided tonight to look up what it was bc I knew it had to be dangerous. And tonight I found out it was the Portuguese man o war. So glad I had the brains to realize they had tentacles that looked like jellyfish stingers. Ive never been stung by jelly fish in 27 years, my secret is to
STAY TF OUT THE OCEAN
Right before I graduated from Texas A&M with my MS in Geophysics I went to Australia with my neighbor who was working on his Doctorate in Zoological Toxinolgy. We were at a Beach that had sting nets to keep jellyfish out. When I see people in panic mode bringing a young woman on shore. She had almost drowned after being stung by a very small Box Jellyfish that had managed to get through the nets. Not from the physiological effects of the venom mind you, but from passing out fr the actual pain induced by the small Box Jelly. We spoke with a Man that had been bitten by an adult Coastal Taipan 3rd most venomous snake on Earth. (Of course at that level of toxicity it’s really kind of pointless to compare 1-3 as that’s like asking which would you rather be shot in the head with? A 50BMG or a 44 magnum?) It just doesn’t matter at that point. But the man still survived. But the woman stung by a Jellyfish no bigger than a golfball is the one that almost died. Quite remarkable really, as had it not been for the copious amount of lifeguard and EMS working those beaches she wouldn’t have survived that incident.

In this video though its just a manowar which most beach going aussies get stung multiple times a year and you almost never hear of serious illness or deaths. Box jellies and irakunjis on the other hand as you say are extremely dangerous and the more surface area of your skin touches it the more likely you are to die. You can touch the ones (box jellies) that wash up with the tip of your finger and the pain will last for 5 minutes but if you wrapped it around your arm youd likely die and have extreme pain.
@@rileysmall4317 Florida box jellies arent as dangerous as the ones in austrailia but still if you are having symptoms of an allergic reaction get medical help

You may be. We have discovery channel in the US
It's interesting hearing from people from different parts of the world. Here (S. FL) they wash up on the beach frequently when we have onshore winds so everyone here knows what they are, but being from a different area I guess you guys never see one. Now you know, if you see it on the beach, don't touch it. The tentacles are what you have to watch out for, and they can be very long.
This is why I stay in the pool.
I've been stung multiple times. It's painful for sure, but not enough start screaming like a total wuss.

Bullshit.
No lie or exaggeration: My granddaughter and I were parasailing in Florida 1200 feet up, when the captain cut the engines for a dunk in the ocean (something they always do). I was looking around for sharks. Instead, we landed in the ocean, surrounded by thousands of jellyfish. Fortunately, we were not stung.

Man-o-war got him right in the face as well… ouch.
I remember having one of those wrap around my arm twice during a surf session. There was a point where cutting my arm off to stop the pain started to seem like a reasonable idea.
I met them in Siargao - Philippines at "Pacifico Beach" - Those creatures are NO JOKE.., very very painful - swimming to it can be in shock and drawn !
they were there? Thats the one beach I didnt get to go too. Went to daku and cemetary everyday. Never saw them.
And Pacifico is really on the outskirts, what did you do to remedy it?
That was a HUGE one! Where I live, they’re smaller than my hand. That must’ve hurt. I’ve gotten stung maybe 3-4 times by really small ones when I go camping. Hope he’s alright, you guys were far from shore!

I got stung last year on bare skin. It was unbelievable pain for 4 hours then the pain went away. The scar is very visible and it still burns from time to time.
Did they have a small boat nearby? I don’t know about snorkeling almost a half a mile from shore without any backup. Leaves no room for anything to go wrong imo.

@@james505ism How can you not comprehend that I said either they have a boat or they have nothing? Where did I imply there was another option?

Got stund when I was a 14-year old kid. Whole body full of tantacles and big waves... It is really painful. Luckily a lot of people helped me...
I got stung on the side of my stomach in Melbourne Beach, Florida when I was 12 years old... It was excruciating... probably one of the most painful things I've ever felt. I was there with my female cousin (16) and her 2 gf's, my sister (15) and her friend. I was in such pain and there was no adult there at the time, nor did we all know what to do.. This was a private beach and at the time literally no one was around to help. My sister ran up the beach staircase and took the bike back to my grandparents house to get my Mom, but was about a 10 minute bike ride there and 10 minutes back, and during that time I was really hurting, in tears.. My cousin's friend said that peeing on it would help the pain. I remember all of them looking at one another, stone-faced. The 4 of them asked who had to pee and after a quick back and forth, my cousin's friend said she would do it. Without hesitation she turned away from me, adjusted her butt near my side, told me to look away, and pulled her bathing suit down.. The first stream came out like a fire hose, right at the left side of my jaw... They were all hysterical laughing at this point; though she did eventually hit the spot. It did _very little_ to alleviate the intense burning. Ended with my Mom showing up and taking me to the emergency room. Never told her I was peed on though. 2 years ago (15 years after this incident) my Aunt passed away and my cousin's friend Karen (who peed on me) was there for the wake. She didn't recognize me, until my cousin went over to her and told her who I was. She didn't make eye contact or talk to me the entire time.. she's also close to 300 pounds, compared to 100 pounds back then.. Didn't age well.
I would have talked to her about it - That's a classic story from your childhood. Her weight today wouldn't make any difference to me...
Florida man is at it again
