My MOT flagged my rear wheel bearings on my XKR, so it's pribably just the diff. Nice to know actually that it's probably fine. I had my floorpans welded up a few years ago as those had rotten through. I was told on the forums that second layer was just welded on during manufacturing to hold the chasis or something in transport. Jaguar never took it off making a rust trap. I daily drive mine, the wheel arches are rusting and so are the sill corners. There is an oil leak from the oil cooler pipes which I need to get sorted but I can't seem to find any good replacement hoses other then ancient Jaguar parts. I figure I will keep daily driving it until I figure it's time to retire it and replace it with something aluminium so I don't have to worry about the fucking rust so much.
It is always worth checking a hydraulic hose place ie they service hydraulic stuff jcb etc, and see if they can make you hoses, they often can exceed what you need and at half the price you expected. worth a try.
@@danstewart8218 Yea I was put in touch with one such company by the garage I use. The problem is I would have to take the ones I have on at the moment off to have new ones made which isn't really possible considering the car is my daily driver. It's a shame no one sells off the shelf aftermarket hoses of such quality because I would just buy them right away even if they where expensive. I would buy the OEM ones from jaguar directly but the prices are insane for 20+ year old hoses that will likely fail soon after installing.
@@Punisher9419found about 40 of what you require in my first google search, so I don’t know what you’re referring to with rare parts man. Your vehicle also uses the same hose as 9 other vehicles. One of which was last manufactured in 2013.
@@Hrossey Can you link to the newest production ones? I can find second hand parts but those aren't going to be worth putting on for such a critical part.
As someone that regularly welds up cars and vans, it really amazes me how people just toss food wrappers, pop cans and bottles and other trash in their vehicles. The treat them with no respect, but like a mobile trash can. They should be ashamed. A nice XK8 being abused like that, shame on them!
Greetings from Los Angeles, California. I just noticed your channel and remember you from the ignition makeover on Harry Metcalfe's Jag. Great video and looking forward to more. Take care.
Charge it 100% a lot of faults will go away. Take it from reading forums and this car for 5 years. That's the number one thing to do: have a full battery and a good one.
Hi Tom. Very interesting video - just identifying and naming the various suspension parts was interesting and helpful to me. I am sure that you and your gang will make this into a very nice car for the next owner. Looking forward to the next video already! Peter
What a great video really shows you the problems you can have with some of these beautiful cars. I am bringing mine along to you guys soon with what I believe to be an electrical issue. Fingers crossed nothing too bad. Look forward to meeting you all regards pete
Tom, if you’re selling G Wagon to Taylor, the price has just gone up by £10k. Fascinating seeing you review the XK, even though it wasn’t what you hoped 🫣
As a mechanic myself for 46 years and a long-time Jaguar enthusiast lifting the car on a two post lift I've been criticised letting the front suspension hang by cyberspace expert's saying I'm going to destroy the V Mounts. What's your opinions Tom ?
@Tom Lenthall's Workshop I would love to see a video on you Jag MK1 Tom, I had a 1957 MK1 about 30 years ago, It was 446 CJO which was the Practical classics car magazine ex-staff car I wish i still had it although i have a nice original 1964 MK2 3.8 now
You repaired the front chassis in my XKR quite a few years ago and you also did the rear chassis rails too! I did one of the floor sections as the other had already been done. I have also had the brake pedal fail. Having owned it for about 10 years and added about 50k miles, I think I have hit pretty much every one of the common issues 😞 Currently working through the rear arch and back end rust repairs. Still love the car though.
The suspected brake switch and cruise control (Cruise not available) can often be due to low battery voltage if the car has been standing more than a few days. With a fully charged car battery sometimes the issue is gone.
Did I spy you towing a grey XK-R (without any wheels on it!) on a trailer through Caton in Lancashire this morning? The car had a Tom Lenthall sticker on the rear. If so, I hope you enjoyed some northern hospitality!
Do you sell the Floor pan repair panels, and also do you have ready made panels for the chassis? As I am currently doing this work myself and ready made repair panels are always quicker.
Rusty and Jags seem to go hand in hand lol, I suffered plenty doing my X300s sills, I'd love to bring her down oneday, although a 18yr olds welding isnt really something I'd want anyone to see haha, great Video as always Tom
Not entirely true. ALL vehicles suffer with it, some worse than others. I weld up cars as part of my job. What car suffers the most from rust at 8-10yrs old TOYOTA AYGO! I have a 2001 XJ8 sat outside, it has rusty wheel arches but is sound otherwise, blimey its 23yrs old in June!
yeah, I mean I realise all cars rust, I remember seeing a very modern golf with rusty sills, I also have a very rusty mk2 mr2, well its welded up now, but yeah cars seem to just disintegrate in the UK lol
@@AlexanderAustin-Charlton-dd8fn Yeah, I live near the coast (within 3miles) which certainly doesn't help. Classic Mini sills become a 'service item' 😆
Really good video, I learn a lot from your expertise, but this car ia still worth every penny you paid for it, double or treble your nmoney after full repair.
That brake light switch is a regular problem, and yes it will prevent the cruise control from working. The switch is up top, the first stage of the fix is to hold a rag up around the pedal shaft anda absolutely lather it with silicone spray, this did it for mine and it worked for the 2 years I had the car. The second fix involves removing the switch, drilling a little hole and filling it with spray. I cannot remember were to drill, but Google it,its a regular problem. 3 fix is buy a new one.... $%&ing hateful car 😂😂
Tom, I've seen worse interiors than that. Women are the worse for looking after cars. Just be thankful you haven't found a pair of used knickers! We usually tell customers to clear out everything in their cars before repairs & only 2% do so we charge extra for the time. Just a question though on the rust, would that be from gritting the roads & moisture in the UK? We tend not to see it much in Australia but you do get rusty floor pans if a vehicle has been driven on a beach. I still think that Jag is repairable, ready to be given a new lease of life. I'm glad you've gone over it to show people what can happen.
Yep rust on UK cars is abysmal most of the time. It is mainly our weather and the salt on the roads but it does also depend on the car. Japanese cars are notoriously very very bad for rust.
Typical Jag DNA. From the MK2 all Jags have had double and treble skin dead air internally unprotected raw steel sections that rot at double and treble speed. To paraphrase Winston Churchill , "Never in the history of mankind has so much gone so rusty so, quickly and so completely" The cutting out rust and welding new metal in is easy and enjoyable. Removing the seats and carpets and protecting the interior and glass from grinding and welding sparks is a pain as is removing all the suspension and brakes and supporting the engine. Then you have all the electrical sensors and junk on a modern ........ all sourced from Joe Lucas ...... Prince of Darkness. Give me a 1960s Jag any day.
G Wagon just got more expensive
Yeah, I don't think it will be 41k, I think it will be 43k now!
😂
That XK is appreciating just by spending time in the vicinity of Tom Lenthall
and away from Alex and Taylor xD
Content every car-minded person can relate to; bought a car with a attractive price and find out whats´s wrong with it. Unbeatable!
👍👍
Your Channel deserves much more love! After leaving it in that state he should be plugging your videos 😂
I agree

Great tidbit about a bit of rear wheel play being a normal Jag IRS thing. I'm guessing it also applies to DB7s.

Yeah the floor pans, not too difficult to do. Takes more time to strip out the carpets than cut out the floor and weld in new metal.

brilliant tom,i could watch you all day,

Those Star Performer tyres are acually really good.. better than u think. Have had them sometimes and have been happy everytime.

Next time your out with Alex...dig the central locking and spray the interior with tart spray....would be hilarious.....
