Excellent work. Love watching you create brother. I know this video is 2 years old but keep it up! There’s a new camper born every day. God Bless you and all you love.
Wow! My compliments.. The thing is these rooftop tents are so darn expensive. You're giving me confidence that I feel ha I can make one too. I'm going to attempt to join you're FB group too. It's great that you're a humble dude and not arrogant as some others. Lol I appreciate your channel an I hope to get around to making one soon. Thanks again. Be proud and happy as you did a great job. Blessings to you!
This whole series is amazing and very educational. I have two suggestions on your doors. 1) The main door should have zipper pulls from the top as well for a high level venting in the summer. 2) if your side doors were reversed the open door flap could be held by the tent lid and the extra fabric won't cause sagging along the longest fabric span. Keep up the great work, can't wait to join the Facebook group
So inspiring to follow this project. Great job on the design and kudos for taking the time to record and share everything. The tent looks great. I actually think the shell looks great as is. I would just clear coat it and call it a day.
Patrick you did a good job I wanted to let you know the 4 poles you placed for the awning you could have done one as a hoop all the way around the awning. Just an idea but love love the camp trailer awesome job.
Thank you for the series, watched it all and must say their is a lot I learned. You have done it all, would like to see the the three of you in it. Kind regards.
Looks good brother!! Trying to see what other options out there than just buying one. It would be nice to build one with my son and have quality memories!! 😁
Awesome job on this. I've been considering building one of these for a while using the old felt & fiberglass over light wood frame. Love the paste you made with wood dust. And congratulations on becoming a dad... it's the best thing ever. Stay safe & thank you
Fantastic series, dude! Congrats on your crazy skills, your new baby and teaching us all how to take chances and actually DO stuff! (....and to the 10 ppl who rated this video a thumb down: I know you are the CEo's for REI, Tepui, Alucab, Front Runner, Yakima and ARB. I just know it. You are scared! You need THIS GUY on your staff...now!)
Thanks Patrick!!! This is exactly what I was locking for. I'm going to use your instructions to build a "VW Westfalia kind" pop up roof on my van that I'm converting to a camper/ home on wheels.
Brilliant effort mate! Looks great and functional. Make sure to fit the 'receivers' for the rods and use an epoxy on the wood before you push in the tubes... seals the timber and stops water ingress. Awesome stuff, cheers for sharing :)
Great job Patrick, Two suggestions SEAR or melt ALL edges of nylon material that was cut, prevents raveling. And maybe just start with a 4 inch wide piece of heavier material where the zippers would go to widen and reinforce the area so you would not have to readjust tent mounting and would strengthen zipper area that will get a lot of abuse.I made a couple of Frostline kits in High school so I might have an hour more experience then you. Very nice job on everything and I'm sure that you have kick started a lot of RTT's being made by the average Joe's out there...
Watching this in 2021. Such a great job, thanks a lot man. Will be building the same tents with my buddy . The only doubt I have is fabric part. Hope I will be able to do as great as you did it. Thanks again for your hard work
Awesome videos. Very informative. I like the step by step instructions and how to. You make it look so easy and give others confidence to do it themselves. 👍
Great video bud! Very informative. I’ve build six teardrops of various sizes and designs. Love them but think it’s Tim I build one of these. I like your first one due to the overall shape. This one is great too but there’s a few more of us lol. Keep it up, can’t wait to see what’s up next with you!
You are just awesome I got to see!! I've been wanting to do this for a couple years and watching you go through these different ones I'm going to build one kind of like what you have there but I am going to try to make mine out of fiberglass build a molding and make the bottom and then on the top make a little bit of a push out so it overlaps the bottom and hopefully with some rivets and some other things I'll make this work if anybody has any ideas about it please let me know again I think you're awesome
You did a great job on this build. I've been looking for some guidance on the fabric aspect of a rooftop tent build. Appreciate your time making these videos.
If you put a length of elastic centrally around the tent it will pull the fabric in when you close it. A lot of clamshell RTT’s utilise this simple design
Just a thought, if you have more material then you could make a separate (hem?) and tape it in between the zipper and the tent hem. Doing it on both sides of the zipper would give you the same hidden zipper as the main door zippers. Just an idea 💡.
Guessing you should seam seal the stitches for the zippers and the storm flaps? Since those all represent lots of tiny holes in the outside of the tent. Looks awesome.
Just a tip (all pro sewers do this), please put in a reverse stitch of about an inch when you begin and end sewing = locks the stitches in place (stops the thread from unravelling) + use a piece of extra material at the zip (both ends) for strength - also, it might an idea to use press studs instead of screws (if you have to keep removing the ripstop all the time for sewing purposes) - BTW your doing a good job!
Leaving a comment just before i roll a fatty make a coffee and watch this , can't wait as I've been looking forward to it 😄,,Great videos mate keep it up 👏(🇬🇧)
For each screw that you use to mount the tent fabric to the RTT, you might want to put small grommets in there, that will help keep the tent from ripping on really windy days.
Thank you, many great tips. But when sewing on a zipper, it is much better to sew it on, along the outer edge before you cut the fabric open. Then once you have sewn the zipper into place along the outer edge, you will cut the fabric from the other side. On the other side there will now be two paralell rows of stitches, you will now cut the fabric in the middle of those two rows of stitches, then fold the edge of the fabric you just cut, and sew it into place, exposing the zipper. That way the zipper will lay perfectly flat on the fabric, and the two pieces of fabric zipped together will be perfectly aligned.
Your work looks great! At 29:10 you mention trying to get the side door zipper covers to lay flatter. Is there room inside the ribbon edge to thread in some elastic cord? I think that would keep those covers flatter, and keep them from flapping in wind, while still leaving the zippers accessible.
And on that side door where you put that extra little piece of material you should put in a little bit of elastic in there and that'll pull that and keep it down if the wind blows and you've got water coming from the same direction the wind is blowing and it's blowing into that zipper that would help to keep it full shut so you won't wouldn't get so much in there
That cat is nuts. A feral black female moved in with me (after her shots, etc.!) and she climbs up a lilac bush and goes up on the roof of my house. Why?! She's nuts too.
I’m not planning on building a rooftop tent, but I do want to build a rustic cabin on a 20 ft trailer. I need to save weight as the cabin will be on the front of the trailer and the back will be room for my Harley, I think the filler and Epoxy will really help keep the weight down
Awesome! For something like that also get some 6in fiberglass tape to put in the corners. It will really help with strength and stiffness. It's basically just 6in strips of fiberglass. You just mix your epoxy and wet out the tape in your corners on top of your epoxy filets. Boatbuilder Central is a great place to source what you need!
I looked in the classifieds and there's some roof luggage boxes of 600 liters and 500 liters up to 220cm x 88cm x 30cm, for about 100 USD, there's loads of choice of them.
Hi there, on the side doors to put the zippers you make the cut and then add a strip of cloth with double hem to the one side of the cut and zipper to cover all the way the zipped seam
Buy the bungee cord to wrap around your tent it will pull it in when you close it so you don't have to tuck it in, it will do automatically. Great job though, I like it.
Longer bowed rods going from bottom to top. Also, I might try sheets of styrofoam on the lid frame with fiberglass for weather protection/ strength. Might save wright
Great work Patrick! And a beautiful final product. Did you abandoned the first design? Will be amazing if you make a series of that model, with all 4 corners up. Thanks for your share!
No, I know its confusing but in the finished product video I announced the Build series but said It wouldn't be that first design. I originally thought that the clamshell design would be easier to do and explain. It's not at all easier It's just different. Although, the hardshell for the first tent is built almost the exact same way as the clamshell that I'm building now. The only real difference is that one has 4 lifting arms and the other has a hinge and struts. I could convert this clamshell over to that box design if I wanted to. (might have to do that in a later video)
Good on you for creating a group, I dont have failbook unfortunately In regards to possibly securing the flap to the bottom, maybe sew in some magnetic strips and have magnets on the bottom of the platform so when you zip it up it'll just magnetically attach
Take some paracord and attach it inside where the hinge is and have it so it reaches the backdoor then as you close the tent you pull the paracord and it brings the hex70 in to make it close by one person.
Hello, Patrick. Great work! Could you please explain the reason you've made the first variant of the tent with the cover that can be rolled up all around and then the second one with the uplift only from one side? You didn't like the first soltuion? It wasn't save enough? Why?
I really enjoyed watching your build. I am planning on building my own while off at Christmas. I maybe giving you a call ( messaging ) you on some advice. Thanks again for sharing and giving me ideas
After about a year of what I hope for you, has been a year of use and enjoyment of your rooftop tent, how are things holding up, particularly the fabric you chose? I've started a foldout, tag along motorcycle tent, and I'm undecided on the fabric. Noticed the scooter in another of your videos, so that might be something for you to consider. Be safe and nice work, thanks
Nice job in all respects! I have a couple of questions? I didn’t see any videos about mounting the the fabric to the shell or painting the shell? How did you mount the tent to the vehicle?
the only thing I could say is those awning poles should be a little thicker they will only buckle and flap in the wind but other then that you've done a wicked job mate
Excellent work. Love watching you create brother. I know this video is 2 years old but keep it up! There’s a new camper born every day. God Bless you and all you love.

Great job on this project. I am watching for tips on my own build using a my pickup with a hard tonneau cover.
What a build journey. Great work Patrick.
Patrick, one word 'AWESOME' !!! Be proud fella its great.

Love it I am starting a pop up topper for my truck and you have given me so much info with this
All I want to say is thanks this was a cool series,, and your presentation, this gave me some ideas to do for my pop up van.
So inspiring to follow this project. Great job on the design and kudos for taking the time to record and share everything. The tent looks great. I actually think the shell looks great as is. I would just clear coat it and call it a day.

Your awesome to come up w the idea to grow a community of this DIY RRT. Awesome work!!
very nice.....so happy to have found you....was looking for ideas......and brother did you give me some!!!!

Man it is looking super! Keep up the great job and thank you for posting it.
Insightful And Impressive ! Gr8 Job!!
You did a great job on this build. I've been looking for some guidance on the fabric aspect of a rooftop tent build. Appreciate your time making these videos.
Looking forward to the finished product. I'd like to see the weather stripping, mounting to the roof etc.
That looks so great
Great job dear 👍

I was thinking the same thing. should keep it tight but forgiving.

NICE JOB!! Truly impressed!!
Absolutely perfect Patrick! Another great episode! Love the FB idea. Headed over there now!

Me sirvió mucho, estoy armando una. Felicitaciones eres genial 👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍
Great job! I got a lot of good ideas. Cheers from Tennessee. R.
Guessing you should seam seal the stitches for the zippers and the storm flaps? Since those all represent lots of tiny holes in the outside of the tent. Looks awesome.
You did such a good job! Thank you so much for documenting all of your work.
This was a fantastic home build series, thank you Patrick, Did you get to paint and mount it?
I'm really impressed with this build. It came out sooo good man, awesome. Great job
Erik

Awesome build series.
cool,i need to copy and build this, thanbks for sharing.
Well done buddy,
Cracking job mate. You’ve inspired me!
For each screw that you use to mount the tent fabric to the RTT, you might want to put small grommets in there, that will help keep the tent from ripping on really windy days.
Vinny Gullotta yeah I was thinking like brass grommets that you crimp on
31:35 A laser level would help with setting that tape up. ;-) Love the build. I'm gonna have to build one myself.
I'm bout to join the group
Thank you, many great tips. But when sewing on a zipper, it is much better to sew it on, along the outer edge before you cut the fabric open.

That way the zipper will lay perfectly flat on the fabric, and the two pieces of fabric zipped together will be perfectly aligned.
If you run a length of thin cord down the inside of that folded fabric, it'll prevent the zipper from getting caught up in the fabric
Mighty Moto thanks for the tip!
Fantastic job!
Respect, bravo sou
Your work looks great!
At 29:10 you mention trying to get the side door zipper covers to lay flatter. Is there room inside the ribbon edge to thread in some elastic cord? I think that would keep those covers flatter, and keep them from flapping in wind, while still leaving the zippers accessible.
hook and loops (Velcro) on the bottom of the doors will help seal it from rain. put the hook part on the wood
That's what I did
Great job !
Awesomeness brotha!!!!!!
Oh Man I have been waiting to see this one! I can't wait to watch it!

I have watched each on an this one I looking good
Looking good man i was wondering what i was going to use for the rainfly rods thanks.
I almost used modified fishing rods.
I looked in the classifieds and there's some roof luggage boxes of 600 liters and 500 liters up to 220cm x 88cm x 30cm, for about 100 USD, there's loads of choice of them.

have you tracked your spending on this? Sweet tent and I love building things. This does make me want to give it a shot!
ขอบคุณมากครับ thank you so much😍
....I would have just used cardboard templates for doors and windows with bug screens folding down for windows! Looks beautiful!
Where did you show how to finish off the extra lengths of zips please? I totally LOVE this build too. Xx
Holy @#$%, first comment! Yay. Thank you for posting your build it has helped me build mine for my tj . Keep up the good work
aaron r heck yeah! Join the fb group! Would love to see the build!
Maybe u cn add something like a dormer on the hardtop side..... Ur project is awesome.....
Buy the bungee cord to wrap around your tent it will pull it in when you close it so you don't have to tuck it in, it will do automatically. Great job though, I like it.
see I knew there were other men that could sew.
That face at 24:23 hahahahaha that’s gonna be me when I do this too 😂🤣😂🤣
Longer bowed rods going from bottom to top.

In regards to possibly securing the flap to the bottom, maybe sew in some magnetic strips and have magnets on the bottom of the platform so when you zip it up it'll just magnetically attach
Well dang.. maybe you can borrow someone’s login front time to time..
Patrick Remington maybe use my wife's. I added some thoughts to securing the backdoor in my first comment
Take some paracord and attach it inside where the hinge is and have it so it reaches the backdoor then as you close the tent you pull the paracord and it brings the hex70 in to make it close by one person.
I think you have made an Awesome impact on the back country traveler! I look forward to additional videos! Thank you! Where is your Patreon link?

It looks just like the lunar lander.
Hey Patrick would love to see an overview of this one once you’ve camped it 🤙🏽
PS what’s the build cost on this beaut?
Very nice. Good job on sewing, did you teach yourself? I own an upholstery shop and I'm impressed.
Yep, Learned right here on youtube. Sailrite's youtube channel helped me the most!
@@PatrickRemington Cool.
This is awesome.
I really enjoyed watching your build. I am planning on building my own while off at Christmas. I maybe giving you a call ( messaging ) you on some advice. Thanks again for sharing and giving me ideas

Отлично🙌 !!! А какой вес? Этой палатки. Руки ростут у мужика из нужного места!! Респект!!
Nice job in all respects! I have a couple of questions? I didn’t see any videos about mounting the the fabric to the shell or painting the shell? How did you mount the tent to the vehicle?
Isaac asked about awning poles. Check into driveway marker fiberglass poles. Lowes or Home Depot . I think maybe 2. 99???
the only thing I could say is those awning poles should be a little thicker they will only buckle and flap in the wind but other then that you've done a wicked job mate
Yeah I thought about using modified fishing rods
