Good to see you back in China with good spirit! The tradition of not having the ashes in a home is not necessarily a Chinese superstition. It is local as different villages different town carry different traditions. Just like the number “4”, folks of some regions don’t like the number because it sounds like death, but some area of China like the number “4” because it sounds like happiness in their dialect. After all, China is a multiethnic country. It is the rich culture that makes China interesting and lovable to explore and live.

Hi Kirk, I just got back to Nanaimo from China adter a 2 months trip, sorry to hear what happened to your family. I wish I could have offered my condolences earlier, but I did not have access to YT as you know it.
Oh btw, the estate left by a person that passed away doesn't automatically goes to the spouse if that deceased one did not leave a will that says so. Her living relatives also have a claim to the estate. If you want to keep her estate you will have to ask her living relatives sign a statement that says they give up the claim and you, Kirk can keep it.

Good luck on your property settlement. I myself did some research recently regarding Chinese law. In your case, the property should be shared between spouse, any children, and her parents. You don't have any kids together; that is not an issue. I guess you are the only survivor, and as long as you have legal marriage document, it should be straight forward. If there is a will, the will will take precedence. I guess in your case, either way will result in the same outcome. Once the court grant you the whole property rights, you will also need to go to the local registration agency to officially change the title to your name only. Sometimes, the court will ask you to prove that her parents are all deceased (you might need to get their death certificates as well). The Chinese system can get complicated because the children and parents have the rights, not like the western world, where the spouse is usually the only person entitled to the property.
How about her brother? It seems like the Chinese government wants to give it to her brother. And Wei Fong's cousin said the same thing to Gweilo.

You have correct advice going to court. The reason is that by going to court, the judge can order a search of her title that she own and freeze them, and no one can take without court permission. The is for your protect. I know this is that I just went through this when my friend passed away end of Nov, 2023.

Something that helps me when I am out and about alone is listening to podcasts and music.. I believe things are going to get much better for you Kirk and I am very excited to see that you made it back. (Not long ago returning to China took a lot longer than 48 hours)
