- I feel a very special relationship to this song, the intelligent lyrics, the plaintive vocals of Nicolette Larson against a lushly produced musical track warms my heart every time I listen to it. I remember hearing it on WKBW Buffalo after the sun went down and the station came alive, and disappeared when the sun came up....I could not get WKBW during the day in Quebec City, it was the only english Top 40 US station that maintained my connection to the US after moving up here to attend college. I almost passed out when I found this Promo 12" version in Toronto at Peter Dunn's Vinyl Museum on Yonge St along with the Doobie Brothers "What A Fool Believes" disco version. I could not wait to get home and play it. I started working on this about five years ago, but it never advanced, so I let it sit and after a few years of tries, I dumped the file and started new this past week, and it finally came together. The punched up kick drum and bass on this 4:19 Promo Disco Version really make this one pop, and I'm glad I can finally put this out there. I hope y'all like it. Larson was born July 17, 1952 in Helena, Montana. She attended high school in Kansas City while working as a waitress and administrative assistant before she turned her attentions to creating a career for herself as a singer, something she dreamed of doing since she was a child. While working in a San Francisco record store, she donated her off time to the Golden Gate Country Bluegrass Festival as support staff member and she began to showcase her considerable voice in the Bay area. Her first paid gig was in Vancouver, British Columbia got her work with Hoyt Axton and doing background vocals for Commander Cody on his LP, "Tales From The Ozone" and then opened for Joan Baez in 1975. She joined forces with Emmylou Harris who put her in touch with friend Linda Ronstadt. One night when Linda and Nicolette were hanging out singing harmony for each other, Neil Young happened to call Linda to ask her if she could recommend a female singer for backgrounds. Linda quickly replied "Nicolette Larson" to which Young replied that since he already had three other recommendations from business associates that had given him the same name, he might as well gieve her a chance. Soon, Linda, Nicolette and Neil were jamming on the songs that Neil Young was preparing for his new album tentatively titled "Tonight's The Night". While he did not tape any of those sessions, he enjoyed the camaraderie. For his follow up LP, "American Stars N'Bars", he got Nicolette and Linda to come over and jam with him, but did not reveal until afterwards to the women that he had professionally recorded their vocals and they unwittingly became "stars in the background" billed as Bullet. Nicolette got her record contract with Warner Brothers and a credit as a backing singer for the Doobie Brothers LP "Minute By Minute" that spawned the #1 pop hit "What A Fool Believes" in 1979, produced by Ted Templeman. Templeman then helmed Nicolette's eponymously titled LP that contained her cover of Neil's "Lotta Love". That song is her defining moment, and she never repeated that success, the official follow up was "Rhumba Girl" (which plays a lot on Stingray 70's channel) did not even make top 40. I remember hearing "French Waltz" a few times on the radio. Further waxings did nothing to increase her popularity on the charts. In 1983, she joined a touring production of "Pump Boys & Dinettes", a country western musical that led to a new recording contract with MCA Nashville. With duet partner Steve Wariner she went Top 40 country with "That's How You Know When Love's Right". Larson suffered from liver failure and succumbed to complications that arose and she died December 16, 1997. In 2006 Rhino Records released "Live At The Roxy", a concert performance that was recorded in 1978 and promptly shelved. In the short time Larson was here, she garnered immense support from the rock community, that attended her funeral and celebrated her talent with tribute albums.
I’m a black man in my late sixties, I love this song and wished I could have met Nicolette, this song just takes me to a time in my life where I thought America was not as bad as it is today! There will never be another Nicolette Larson !!❤️
I’m right with you buddy when this song came out when I was a kid I think it’s just takes me back to the time innocence
Thats cuz it wasnt . Much better times ugh
Wish I could escape this crazy world and find myself back in the 1978 and 79 era. Back with my family and friends and never come back to this crazy existence of the 21st century
I agree with you I liked the 70’s the world has gotten more crazy as time goes by. What is of interest our creator taught us to pray for his government or kingdom to come to earth that will eliminate all this crazy stuff. The crazy things happening confirm we are in the last days as the good book says.
@@markjanfrancisco5156Humanity has a choice and was warned of the consequences for succumbing to depravity ahead of time.
We’ve always been given an informed choice but have willfully refused time and time again.
I’d be out of patience too.
I disagree with that. Some cities looked even worse in the 1970s than they do today! But at least the music didn't have any room for lyrics that glorified violence back then!
You got that right, friend. How I miss those days. Life was so much better then... I wish the youngsters could understand!
Take me with you! I am more than ready! I miss my family and friends of the era.
This song is so awesome. I was 12 years old when it came out and it stuck with me. As a almost 57-year-old, its gonna take a lotta love!!! RIP Nicolette Larson, What a beautiful voice.
Me also...at 13 though....those horns! This version though so slick!
My god, she was so talented and an absolutely gorgeous woman. Thank you for the music and for gracing the world with your beauty. Gone far too soon. R.I.P. ❤
Nicolette Larson was by far the best looking Doobie Brother , in my opinion .A voice like an Angel !
Was 20 when this came out…now at 64 ❤still loving it❤’70’s music 🎶 is eternal
Siempre entenderé eso...
Luvvit! For decades!
Young people born in 1996 (like me), who like this type of music, who said I? Who listening in 2020?. I love this song!
OMGOSH I adore this song.!! I remember hearing it on the radio many times as I was growing up in the 70's. It truly was the best time of my life. You know I just don't like the world here in 2023. People have gone stark raving mad like it's the wild wild west or something like it. Meanness and evil abound. The times that I grew up in weren't perfect no but it wasn't like a walk thru hell either. My family and friends we all loved and cared about each other. Those things seem to have gone out of style. It's very sad and depressing. If I could choose to stay here or go back it wouldn't even be a question. I'd be outta here traveling like the speed of light and sound. First stop 1970.
Better yet, make a time loop in 1979 and wake up to this song on the radio every morning and just abide by it, forever.
I couldn't have put it any better. Why has the world gone so crazy!?
@atamnsixty because the music sucks now.
What an AMAZING song - Love, Love, Love Nicollette Larson!!!!!
I'm 58 from the UK. I thought I had heard it all, but I had never heard of Nicolette Larson and this track is new to me. I absolutely love it
🤔 59 AND IVE LOVED IT FROM DAY ONE AND WAS ONLY 14 YEARS OLD WHEN IT CAME OUT AND I STILL LOVE IT TO THIS VERY DAY AS WELL YOU INDEFINITELY HAVE A VERY HEAVY HEART AS I DO AND PASSIONATE ABOUT MUSIC AS WELL🧐😉👍👍
I'm not sure if this was even released in the UK, hence the reason you never heard it growing up. I'm in Canada this was definitely a popular radio song in my youth and it charted in the top 10 like it did on US Billboard. Better late than never is apropos I guess. Enjoy!
@@fantasyguru26 my hub knows all the music from the 70s and, although he had heard it before, he said it didn't reach our charts. I really don't know why, it's a great track.
58 year old dude here who also enjoys this jam. Brings great memories growing up in 70s with all the great artists of that era. Glad we have RUclips as an alternative to a Time Machine.
@@elgatogordo9523 I have been listening to so much I never knew existed. I’m discovering new music everyday.
One of those songs you never get tired of
That's for sure!!❤ Wish I had such a love!🙏🙏🙏
Love this old school music and brings my good memories
I was crazy teenager of 17 when this was released. Fun sneaking into hot discotheques around Dallas until past midnight!! Now I am 63, still boogying!
One of greatest completion of talent,voice,music...sentenced to eternity....
Much better than today's 'artists'. if released in 2021 would hit #1 & a Grammy! Miss you Nicolette!🧡
I arrived here by accident...and Boy am I glad I did..Im from the UK and have never heard of this wonderfully Talented Young Lady..I am now going to try and listen to as many of her songs as I can. IT'S ANOTHER SUNDAY,STRAIGHT UP 9 O'CLOCK ON THE PM SIDE IN MY LITTLE PART OF THE WORLD AND LIFE IS SO GOOD TO ME AT THIS VERY MOMENT IN TIME.THANKS FOR ALL THIS GOOD MUSIC DISCOCAT.ANOTHER WINNER WINNER FROM YOU BUDDY.
The driving force of the bass and drums and the magical rendering of her voice and saxophone is exquisite.
Yes, I’m hearing 3 mics on the drum set (or several takes with different mic placement) with its elements panned to left, right and center. Awesome texture, it’s the secret ingredient in any mix.
R.I.P. Nicollette, she sang like an Angel.
😢
You're Damn right!!!🙏💔🙏
她於1997 年12月6日。病逝于 加州大學洛杉磯分校附屬醫療中心。死因腦水腫和肝功能衰竭,享年45歲。🙏
And was too underrated!
i love this song.R.I.P. Nicolette
Senior year of HS, my first "love". Nicolette the voice of an angel
Todays music CANNOT come close to the beautiful music of the 70’s
Or the 60's
today's music is awful ; talentless lyrists , talentless composers , talentless producers , all awful
I LOVE THIS OLD SCHOOL MUSIC AND BRINGS MY GOOD MEMORIES
Nicolette was one of the best backup vocalists in the 1970's, often on sessions for Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, James Taylor.....so when the time came for her debut album containing this hit, they all sang backup for her, including this gem of a song written by Neil Young.
Yes, Nicolette left us too soon, but her memorable music lives on
Thanks for sharing about the backup singers. I never knew that.
In 1978, I was only 18,
I'm 1960 Boomer, and today I'm 61, I first listened to this song at Paradise garage yes with the great DJ...
Amazing. Larry
God !...What a truly beautiful voice. They just don't look for singers like Nicolette Larson anymore. So many great talents at this time.
I'm 29 and I love this song so much!
It’s gonna take a lot of love to change the way things are. Love you Nicolette and we miss you
Love this song.
Happy weekend to you all.

I was 16 when this song was on the radio. I have mixed emotions over hearing the song. It brings back great memories of hanging out with my friends in the neighborhood. It also reminds me that life is fleeting and those years are far behind. Growing up in the 70’s was special. I was so blessed to have been a teen then!
Same .....16 living in Ohio.
was 11 from Buenos Aires , simply a wonderful voice and wonderful song
Right back at ya, Sydney Australia, was a big hit over here, traveling to the beach in dad's wagon listening to this on the radio 📻❤️
Born November 1961 ... yes the 70s and 80's were great
I was right behind you as I was born in 1971 and was a teen in the 80's
Brings me back to days of driving around in our 77 Caprice Estate Wagon! Car floated down the highway and this song was just as smooth! I miss those days!
A great loss in music and in Life. RIP Nicollete❤😢
I use to sneek and stay up late on friday night after my parents went to bed..lol.. to see the Midnight special..i remember seeing her..those were the BEST days of my life..

This song is from a time when music was art. Now is just business.
Yes!!!
Very true but alot of music is about having enjoyment to go with it.
Very true
Mehh, That's bullsh*t. Ya just ain't looking hard enough. If you only listen to the radio and other popular music sources, yes, you won't much with a soul. But if you look in the right places you will.
S0 true 70s 80s were the days and the best music
I was 16...i love this song so much..disco era..best of the 70s
I WAS VERY YOUNG...FELL IN LOVE WITH NICOLETTE'S....VOICE.
.BEAUTIFUL!!
Probably my most favorite year of my youth... 1978.... a lot of wonderful music that year and this version is so fantastic!!
I was 21 that year, rode a harley in Chicago, and your right, this is STILL the best version I ever heard. / My buddies joked with me about buying this LP,,, but none of them said turn it off. Some even went out and bought the LP, . The girlfriends loved it of course! / Yep, lotta good memories when this album came out!!!
@Holly Smith....your right, I'd just come out of high school. Thought Nicholette was so beautiful.
Mine too! Time went by so fast..
Indeed so true. I was only 9 years old, and boy what beautiful music and singing artist in those years. It will never be the same.... Fantastic memories!😉✌🙏
Without doubt
Very talented lady 👏
I bought the LP in 1978 when I was 28. We were married in 1974 and are still together... lotta love.
Wow what a great read Calvin....nice man! BTW I'm a railroader and relate to you muchly!

Miss those days ..."1979" ♥️ When MUSIC was REAL MUSIC & LOVE was REAL!! ♥️♥️
Golden Era..Timeless Music..❤
Semplicemente fantastica! Musica, armonia, leggerezza ..
This song has always brighten my heart and soul. One of my all time favorites!!

This song is very well organized and layered. The producer deserves credit too.

The way that she pronounced her R's.
You mean Neil Young
@@SMPMS8389 Neil Young wrote the song and even though he recorded it, Nicolette's version is the best, hands down.
Nicolette forever
I’m 58 years old, listened to music all my life and am sorry to say I’ve never heard this song before. I will be listening again and again, it’s brilliant. Thank you for uploading
We had it sooo good in the 70s -- and weren't bright enough to appreciate it as we should have.😢
I am a young 82 this song never gets old I loved it ever since it came out in 1978 Nicolette Larson had such a beautiful voice such a beautiful woman with a good heart I would like to see someone sing that song and that would be my choice would be seller Grace she said singer or Lonnie Gardner she's also a young singer I think that Sean would catapult them to number one and make everybody happy once again beautiful song can't get enough of it listen to it every day I know she passed on with Nicolette Larson dead but I still love her and miss her I will always sing her song everyday play her song Rather

I was 12 in 1979, and this tune still sends chills up my spine An incredible talent we lost too soon...
I was 5 yr old kid in '79 and still remember the whole tune, tempo, melody in my head. That tell you that I'm true music lover.
Yes I was listing to a transistor radio, I listen a station call WQAM, grandma used to say turn DAT radio down.Ans guess what it was da 70s boom

She was two years older than me, and I wish I could have met her. She is so beautiful and talented. Don't make em like that anymore. RIP pretty lady.
Song makes me think of my youth in the 70’s and early 80’s. Those great days are no more, but beautiful music like this one, give you a moment of how great things were and you recapture those same old great feelings. Also a reminder when times are good,, savor and appreciate it bc it may not come again.

Her voice fits the music just perfect soft smooth jazz Just relax and let this song take you there🎶🎶🎶❤️
Loved this song the first time I heard it and the next day I bought it. And there is another reason I love this as I was blessed twice in my life, the first was to meet and marry my first wife and was together for 42 years till my God needed her and the second time is to meet the woman I am with now. This song is so true as a lotta love can make bad times go away and good times so good.
