Honestly, this move was genius by Square Enix. I have a free trial account as well as a my regular account. On the Free trial Discord I've seen many a long time free trial player give in and sub just because that Stormblood to Shadowbringers cliffhanger is brutal and people just had to see it through.
It’s a good marketing strategy for both free trials and the game community to increase more popularity. Seriously.. EndWalker population dropped harder than Shadowbringers now
I have a full account and a Free Trial account because if my sub ever stops (it does sometimes cuz broke ass living off of 5k a year) I can still play during the sub lul. I love FFXIV.
@@Anakin.xx1 Well, before I became homeless my only source of income was donating plasma. I'm waiting on my SSI. I tried working but due to my sever mental health issues I can't keep a job so I was donating plasma for some income but they don't allow the homeless to donate soo....*shrugs*
Ive been on the free trial for ~3 years. Havent even left ARR (just did steps of faith, so close) yet because the person ive been playing with our schedules havent been very friendly so we dont get to play much. So i made a second character to do everything in ARR before continuing on solo....nearly 6 relics done lol
I have a friend who's doing that. They're on like onlyba few relics left and are pretty burned out. I don't think they've been playing as long as that though. They want all their relics done then a bunch of us are gunna help them do all the ARR extremes min ilevel.
@@mrfathed3129 thats fair, i knew i was going to need lots of materia so ive been stockpiling them since i made the character, even ones i dont know if i need for anything else. after 6 materia relic steps, i have enough for 1 more relic before i need to start grinding some more out. getting random ones while leveling lower jobs to 50 does help though since T1 materia is needed most
@@cutecats532 i dont touch the game everyday, some days i hop on for an hour and just do random things, other days i spend 4 hours working on relic stuff as for MINE EXs, i join everything ARR EX related when they pop up. ive done a couple MINEs and have currently cleared through T1-10 coils (not MINE) through PF progs
FFXIV really is an amazing experience. I played through the entire MSQ right before Endwalker came out, and finished Endwalker shortly after launch. I can easily say this is the best mmorpg story ever. And this is coming from a 14 year long WoW player.
If you love Final Fantasy as a franchise, there's a very good chance you'll love Final Fantasy XIV. It's a love letter to the series. There are so many references and musical cues, it would be impossible to list them all. I've lost count of the times I got goosebumps because of a reference, or song that took me right back to my childhood. It's one of the reasons that, while some have had issues with Endwalker, it's still easily my favorite expansion. It's a love letter to Final Fantasy IV, the very first RPG I ever played. Playing FFXIV is one of the best decisions I ever made, and easily the best gaming decisions of my life.

I remember trying to finish Stormblood back when EW came out while waiting in que for a while; While I have some issues with Stormblood, I ultimately really liked it and I've even seen some undeserved hate for it. I loved the characters and their motivations in this one, and this xpac introduced my favorite villiain in the entire mmo. I loved the Alliance Raids (being a huge FF12 fan) and anyone who hasnt tried yet, i urge to do so. Just be sure to do the trial first like Zepla said so you're not stuck constantly paying a sub fee while you're unsure if you even like it. I started FF14 back in 2021 after seeing it in my Steam Library after ignoring it for a while. This was right before the big Blizzard lawsuit, so i saw all of these new sprouts coming into the game as well and it was amazing to see. Also, even if FF14 didn't win best ongoing game (I'm glad Cyberpunk won they really brought that game back from the dead) it is really an amazing game with an amazing community and I still run into friendly players daily!
Free trial user here. Its nice though to not use other things, such as retainers or banks. Makes the crafting and gathering experience more interesting, as you need to research in depht for the recipe, all the necessary ingredients and items, and then actually craft. Entertaining, absolutely tedious with all the running and back and forth, but its a nice way to explore and immerse yourself in the world!
Was meaning to ask about this, given the limited inventory how tight is your inventory management? Obviously you won't be able to be a pack rat and horde everything but is it tight enough that you'd need to shed inventory slots just to craft something important? Like if you were to spend time making decent gear for one class only to have to throw it out because you are trying to level a different class later on?
16:40 let's be honest here, this video is info for subbed players to know limits of free trial when baiting others to pick it up. Like i was wondering if free trials could pick up dancer etc but was not motivated to look it up, now i know they cant. Party creation limitations are super important i had no clue existed, now i know i need to be present when ppl i know unlock sestasha to at least party them up if i didn't have time to run with them.
Honestly this was the bestest gaming experience of my life. Getting into FFXIV pushed me to let go of the handful of games that I was clinging to for years as my favourites.
There's something very important that I want new players to know...i do not recommend buying the full game or complete edition before finishing all the free trial content because free trial gives you unlimited time to finish the main game and 2 expansions, I don't need to tell you how many hours you need to complete all that😂 if you buy the complete edition from the start you gonna have to do base game and all 4 expansions in only 30 days..you just can't..trust me , it's much better to finish the base game with the first 2 expansions without a time limit then start your 30 days subscription right from the third expansion.. unless you care about all the free trial restrictions or don't care about paying 15$ every month to keep playing , i actually spent more than 1000 hours in the free trial just to take advantage for not having to sub every month even though i can upgrade whenever i want, the amount of content they give you for free is insane
I started the free trial about less than a month ago. And I have been enjoying it thoroughly. The limitations do not interfere with the game experience. The essentials for a successful and fun playthrough are present. The Novice Network, has a mix of rather new players and mentors and it's an amiable environment. Currently level 63 bard and there still is lots for me to do. Duty Finder also has been a very fun experience (the 3 tpk's v. Fenriri aside). lol. I'm glad I started playing. Also, Zepla's videos are a wealth of support for any sprout seeking sunlight. Lest you are a bunny seeking a new burrow... lol...

Some of those restrictions on free trial accounts are pretty brutal for my play style. Totally moot in my case anyway. Because I was a veteran of FFXI for well over a decade. So I knew what I was getting into with FFXIV and was happy to pay from the outset.
I was probably 150 hours in before I even noticed the Gil/marketplace/party finder restrictions and at that point was sold on the game so happy to purchase it and subscribe.
Been playing this game for 3years straight and I'm just now reaching a point of burnout. I'll join back on once the new stuff happens but the game has treated me well. Also that skit was hilarious in the beginning 😂😂😂
I liked the free trial so much I registered for another one even after getting a full account! Advantages to this: - Can 'Solo' A4S without worrying about Nisi - Can help a friend get into the 50/60/70 Alliance Raids unsynched to take screenshots when they don't want to use Explorer mode for whatever reason - Can semi-AFK heal with scholar fairy in content such as PotD/HoH and 60/70 treasure dungeons
🐇I'm new to FFXIV, just started playing and I'm a little LVL 12 sprout. I love it so much already and predict a hardcore addiction. I was going to upgrade because I want to be a BUNBUN! but you've convinced me to take it slow, enjoy the story and not mind too much about unlocking everything right away. Thank you Zepla!
I've been wanting to play this game for...years, I'm ashamed to say. The reason being is that it looks so overwhelming and complicated. I've never played an MMORPG before so even the lingo and gameplay is completely foreign to me. Also trying to play along side other players is intimidating (lol I don't want to mess up and get yelled at!) Last time I heard about the free trial, iirc, it was capped at Lvl 30, so hearing that it now goes to Lvl 70 and there's other installments that are included, that does draw me in a bit more. So I really appreciate you for making this video with updated information but also being real about what is included and what isn't. I'm not in any state to jump fully into a subscription but if playing the free trial is just as enjoyable I will have to seriously consider it. Thanks!
If that may make you feel at peace, most of the game's dungeon-type content can be played solo with NPCs now. As such, you can take your time when going through it without feeling the pressure of other players. (That said, it applies to mostly just the main story content. Side content will typically not apply, but a lot of content can be played solo anyway.)
Yeah, to piggyback on this just a bit. There are 3 types of group instances(not counting pvp) you play in the game. Dungeons, trials, and raids. As of now, every dungeon needed for the story has the NPC backup option(optional dungeons not in the main story do not), as do the early game trials. You currently arent "forced" to group up for anything until after you beat the base game(ARR 2.0) at level 50. Thats when you find the one required raid series(the crystal tower saga) and the first of the trials that require a group. So thats a lot of time to get used to the game before you NEED to play with others even a little bit.
In my experience, messing up as a new player only gets more help and tips. I've never been yelled at and I've done some pretty dumb things in dungeons and trials lmao. New players have a little sprout icon next to their name, so people will immediately know you're new and will be way more open to helping! The toxicity that seems a feature of that other big MMO doesn't really apply to FFXIV in my experience. One fight was so difficult due to some mechanics that got reworked that even veteran players were having trouble. We ended up wiping 20 times until we figured it out, and in the end when we finally beat it, it felt so good and everyone congratulated each other. It was really cool and I learned a lot. All that to say, don't worry about getting yelled at! Come join us in Eorzea!
something I noticed that going from the trial to the full game is that, as a free trial player, I did not have access to glamour plates!! I was able to unlock and cast glamour, but not use the plates themselves. nobody talks about this! so please be forewarned that though you may be able to accumulate drip, it will be much more difficult to organize.
My friends using console try to tell me all the time "I remember my time as a free trial player." And I have to laugh. Every time I mention that I was free to play for about a year and a half they're like "Wait. What? Mine was only 30 days. You can't play free for over a month. How did you do it." Which allows me to smile like a dummy and tell them "It's PC only." (They're constantly bragging about console being better than PC, so to have that small bit over them gives me enough to rib them a bit, in a friendly way, of course) They have no idea the long term grind F2P is in FFXIV 😅 I miss being f2p

10 years ago I would tell you it wasn't worth a subscription. But today I would tell you that the amount of content Is immense and I personally feel its now worth it.
I was about to buy the game after already spending a looooot of hours in the Trial and then got the news about it being expanded to include Stormblood - guess I'll keep it going for a while longer~. Still haven't really started the Stormblood main quest, though ^^'
Thanks for the great video! As a free trial player some days I'm experiencing a lot of 90002 errors and getting booted from the game. Would a paid subscription change that? Loving the game but some days its unplayable.
I was on a roll a year back or so in the game, and really wanted to play PvP. So I ended up buying the game before even finishing RR. I wasn't able to play as much as I wanted and felt like I was wasting money if I didn't play. So I stopped. Recently made a new account with an alt email. Been enjoying it little by little at my pace with our paying. Not being able to trade or the like makes it feel somewhat like an iron man/selfmade mode. Though I do miss PvP, I don't think it's worth the trade off.
I am just starting FFXIV with the free trial. One thing I don't like is that is big for the sake of being big ... it gets boring going to one place to another as there is no exploration at all. Maybe they did it this way to sell mounts? Apart from that is a nice second game to take slowly
free trial players used to be able to receive mail. I miss those days. ( i also accidentally mailed my alt on free trial and eternal bond bracelet and can't get it back)
The only restriction I dont enjoy much is the 300k gil cap but thats only because i burn through gil getting gear for alt jobs Edit: i know u can craft gear but im trying to get every gathering job to 70 first.
I think it's fair to mention all those restrictions are made because of bots. Like in any other game, ff14 has "gold seller" too, so 300k gil cap makes sense and housing also, because if we look to Ark Survival Ascended, their official servers are floated with bots capturing spaces and selling these spots for real money.

I bought FF14 at a time when the free trial did not exist. I found it really expensive to go through the pre- heavensward content with monthly subs. And now that I got to heavensward, I just don't have the time to play enough anymore to justify a sub I already thought was expensive. And I can't convert backwards to a free account because I paid for the basegame :/ I wish life gave me more time to play this awesome game to justify the sub cost, cause its a great game all around. There aren't a lot of games that respect my time like this does.
i don't get it why the magetick attire and solus minion aren't allowed for the free trial players ? i have the minion but the attire is on my next thing to buy
I feel the incapacity to send friend request is very harsh. I'd understand if it was limited in some capacity but if someone starts playing with another friend and both are on Free Trial, there's no way for these people to add one another as friends, which I feel goes against the whole MMO aspect of the game and last time I checked that part wasn't specificied in the restrictions on the Free Trial terms in their page (unless it's considered part of another system which is said to be unavailable).
They only expanded the "free trial" to not require subscription after seeing the open beta free trial players griping over the free play time 30 days I was a XBox open beta player and because i was open beta free trial I did not qualify for extended free trial
I'm so happy not being the only one thinking that! I'm a bit mad about the trial tbh...us veterans from 30 days trial-times spent so much money over the years for monthly subscription and full price dlcs while the trial gets longer and the full game packs get cheaper and cheaper. I wouldn't mind getting like 3 months subscription free as a loyal player per year or even cheaper dlcs compared to those who started on a trial a few weeks ago buying their first full price dlc. But the game tended to spoil new players more than veterans for a while now so what do I hope for anyways 😒

Not worth playing. I play MMOs with my wife, and free players can't create parties, so we literally can't play together. Pass. (No, we will not be standing around in local chat begging some random stranger to form a part with us and then leave. HARD pass.)
When I finally had a decent income I actually genuinely paid for Winrar once. And a few other programmes like Alcohol 1000% or whatever it was called. (which I accept, rather defeats my altruism. what with Alcohol being CD ripping software.)
Great video. That skit at the beginning made me snort! So one way to sort of counter the gil cap is by taking the Allagan gold/silver/tin pieces as quest rewards and keeping them in inventory or chocobo bag. I have almost a million to cash in once I eventually finish the free trial and buy the full game.
You can but it’s pretty worthless, can’t trade, Cabot join parties, can’t use the market, can only get to floor 10 of the tower of the dead. This games “Free” trial is a pathetic excuse for a free trial it’s gatekeepeing literally every turn “oh but bots” figure out a way to deal with bots without punishing players. Here is my question having not watched the video and not having time to do so right now: If you played literally everything in the base game and HW during the old Free Trial, and now it's updated to have Stormblood...could you load up your old Free Trial character and just continue?! Yea they added it to the free trial in a recent expansion patch. They might just ask you to download it or something when you go to log in but you'll be able to play it.
Wow I didn’t think pvp was restricted to paying players. That and the party invite I will never understand. Like why restrict those specific things? It’s weird. I know my bf is a free trial player but I was never one due to a greedy friend that forced me to be a payed member for his mount. And not only that. At the time I couldn’t use the hours he gave me due to my laptop at the time couldn’t run it. Took me many years later to finally be able to get to play.

Honestly does not make a difference for me. Monthly fees just put pressure on me to play, which I don't find enjoyable. Which in turn makes all these good things about the free trial, a negative for me. Since if it really is a good game, I'd just be bummed by the fact that it has a monthly subscription attached to it. And at the same time, that would make everything I end up experience in the free trial less than it could have been because in the back of my mind I know that there's all these restrictions that I'll never get rid of unless I opt in. I would love to play, I like final fantasy! But no amount of free trial will make me actually play the game. I want to pay once and never have to put a single thought to it ever again. Being able to play whenever I want without having to jump through any extra unnecessary hoops or having to think about the nasty reality I'd be trying to leave behind once I log in. As well as being able to just stop playing without having to start up payments again when I want to play some more. If there were a free trial I'd be OK with, it would be one that allows you full access, every feature in the game for a reasonable amount of time after which you'll decide whether to continue playing (opt in) or move on to something else. And when I say reasonable, I mean that towards the player-side, not the companies trying to make a profit. As soon as it becomes a manipulation tactic to get me to pay, the entire experience is tainted with a nasty aftertaste. If the game isn't good enough to speak for itself, then I don't feel the need to [have to play]. 🤷 TLDR; The free trial still isn't good enough for me, [guild wars] and [eve online] raised the bar for the mmo buying experience and broke my ability to enjoy mmos respectively.

These 3 expansions offer you more worthwhile single player content than many AAA games, and is likely a very good place to just chill with people

Some of those restrictions on free trial accounts are pretty brutal for my play style. Totally moot in my case anyway. Because I was a veteran of FFXI for well over a decade. So I knew what I was getting into with FFXIV and was happy to pay from the outset.

I was probably 150 hours in before I even noticed the Gil/marketplace/party finder restrictions and at that point was sold on the game so happy to purchase it and subscribe.
Been playing this game for 3years straight and I'm just now reaching a point of burnout. I'll join back on once the new stuff happens but the game has treated me well. Also that skit was hilarious in the beginning 😂😂😂

Advantages to this:
- Can 'Solo' A4S without worrying about Nisi
- Can help a friend get into the 50/60/70 Alliance Raids unsynched to take screenshots when they don't want to use Explorer mode for whatever reason
- Can semi-AFK heal with scholar fairy in content such as PotD/HoH and 60/70 treasure dungeons

I've been wanting to play this game for...years, I'm ashamed to say. The reason being is that it looks so overwhelming and complicated. I've never played an MMORPG before so even the lingo and gameplay is completely foreign to me. Also trying to play along side other players is intimidating (lol I don't want to mess up and get yelled at!) Last time I heard about the free trial, iirc, it was capped at Lvl 30, so hearing that it now goes to Lvl 70 and there's other installments that are included, that does draw me in a bit more. So I really appreciate you for making this video with updated information but also being real about what is included and what isn't. I'm not in any state to jump fully into a subscription but if playing the free trial is just as enjoyable I will have to seriously consider it. Thanks!
If that may make you feel at peace, most of the game's dungeon-type content can be played solo with NPCs now. As such, you can take your time when going through it without feeling the pressure of other players. (That said, it applies to mostly just the main story content. Side content will typically not apply, but a lot of content can be played solo anyway.)

Yeah, to piggyback on this just a bit. There are 3 types of group instances(not counting pvp) you play in the game. Dungeons, trials, and raids. As of now, every dungeon needed for the story has the NPC backup option(optional dungeons not in the main story do not), as do the early game trials. You currently arent "forced" to group up for anything until after you beat the base game(ARR 2.0) at level 50. Thats when you find the one required raid series(the crystal tower saga) and the first of the trials that require a group. So thats a lot of time to get used to the game before you NEED to play with others even a little bit.
In my experience, messing up as a new player only gets more help and tips. I've never been yelled at and I've done some pretty dumb things in dungeons and trials lmao. New players have a little sprout icon next to their name, so people will immediately know you're new and will be way more open to helping! The toxicity that seems a feature of that other big MMO doesn't really apply to FFXIV in my experience. One fight was so difficult due to some mechanics that got reworked that even veteran players were having trouble. We ended up wiping 20 times until we figured it out, and in the end when we finally beat it, it felt so good and everyone congratulated each other. It was really cool and I learned a lot. All that to say, don't worry about getting yelled at! Come join us in Eorzea!

something I noticed that going from the trial to the full game is that, as a free trial player, I did not have access to glamour plates!! I was able to unlock and cast glamour, but not use the plates themselves. nobody talks about this! so please be forewarned that though you may be able to accumulate drip, it will be much more difficult to organize.

My friends using console try to tell me all the time "I remember my time as a free trial player." And I have to laugh. Every time I mention that I was free to play for about a year and a half they're like "Wait. What? Mine was only 30 days. You can't play free for over a month. How did you do it." Which allows me to smile like a dummy and tell them "It's PC only."
(They're constantly bragging about console being better than PC, so to have that small bit over them gives me enough to rib them a bit, in a friendly way, of course)
They have no idea the long term grind F2P is in FFXIV 😅 I miss being f2p

10 years ago I would tell you it wasn't worth a subscription. But today I would tell you that the amount of content Is immense and I personally feel its now worth it.
I was about to buy the game after already spending a looooot of hours in the Trial and then got the news about it being expanded to include Stormblood - guess I'll keep it going for a while longer~. Still haven't really started the Stormblood main quest, though ^^'

Thanks for the great video! As a free trial player some days I'm experiencing a lot of 90002 errors and getting booted from the game. Would a paid subscription change that? Loving the game but some days its unplayable.
I was on a roll a year back or so in the game, and really wanted to play PvP. So I ended up buying the game before even finishing RR. I wasn't able to play as much as I wanted and felt like I was wasting money if I didn't play. So I stopped.
Recently made a new account with an alt email. Been enjoying it little by little at my pace with our paying. Not being able to trade or the like makes it feel somewhat like an iron man/selfmade mode. Though I do miss PvP, I don't think it's worth the trade off.

I am just starting FFXIV with the free trial. One thing I don't like is that is big for the sake of being big ... it gets boring going to one place to another as there is no exploration at all. Maybe they did it this way to sell mounts? Apart from that is a nice second game to take slowly
free trial players used to be able to receive mail. I miss those days. ( i also accidentally mailed my alt on free trial and eternal bond bracelet and can't get it back)
Im playing on Xbox currently and I can't have friends , or use the marketplace to sell items, and you can't join parties or join company.
The only restriction I dont enjoy much is the 300k gil cap but thats only because i burn through gil getting gear for alt jobs
Edit: i know u can craft gear but im trying to get every gathering job to 70 first.
I think it's fair to mention all those restrictions are made because of bots. Like in any other game, ff14 has "gold seller" too, so 300k gil cap makes sense and housing also, because if we look to Ark Survival Ascended, their official servers are floated with bots capturing spaces and selling these spots for real money.

I bought FF14 at a time when the free trial did not exist. I found it really expensive to go through the pre- heavensward content with monthly subs. And now that I got to heavensward, I just don't have the time to play enough anymore to justify a sub I already thought was expensive. And I can't convert backwards to a free account because I paid for the basegame :/ I wish life gave me more time to play this awesome game to justify the sub cost, cause its a great game all around. There aren't a lot of games that respect my time like this does.

I feel the incapacity to send friend request is very harsh. I'd understand if it was limited in some capacity but if someone starts playing with another friend and both are on Free Trial, there's no way for these people to add one another as friends, which I feel goes against the whole MMO aspect of the game and last time I checked that part wasn't specificied in the restrictions on the Free Trial terms in their page (unless it's considered part of another system which is said to be unavailable).
They only expanded the "free trial" to not require subscription after seeing the open beta free trial players griping over the free play time 30 days I was a XBox open beta player and because i was open beta free trial I did not qualify for extended free trial

I'm so happy not being the only one thinking that! I'm a bit mad about the trial tbh...us veterans from 30 days trial-times spent so much money over the years for monthly subscription and full price dlcs while the trial gets longer and the full game packs get cheaper and cheaper. I wouldn't mind getting like 3 months subscription free as a loyal player per year or even cheaper dlcs compared to those who started on a trial a few weeks ago buying their first full price dlc.
But the game tended to spoil new players more than veterans for a while now so what do I hope for anyways 😒

yes the biggest issue is not beeing able to play as viera, i wouldnt have survived ARR as a Non-Viera

Great video. That skit at the beginning made me snort! So one way to sort of counter the gil cap is by taking the Allagan gold/silver/tin pieces as quest rewards and keeping them in inventory or chocobo bag. I have almost a million to cash in once I eventually finish the free trial and buy the full game.

Yea they added it to the free trial in a recent expansion patch. They might just ask you to download it or something when you go to log in but you'll be able to play it.
Wow I didn’t think pvp was restricted to paying players. That and the party invite I will never understand. Like why restrict those specific things? It’s weird. I know my bf is a free trial player but I was never one due to a greedy friend that forced me to be a payed member for his mount. And not only that. At the time I couldn’t use the hours he gave me due to my laptop at the time couldn’t run it. Took me many years later to finally be able to get to play.

Honestly does not make a difference for me.
Monthly fees just put pressure on me to play, which I don't find enjoyable.
Which in turn makes all these good things about the free trial, a negative for me. Since if it really is a good game, I'd just be bummed by the fact that it has a monthly subscription attached to it. And at the same time, that would make everything I end up experience in the free trial less than it could have been because in the back of my mind I know that there's all these restrictions that I'll never get rid of unless I opt in.
I would love to play, I like final fantasy!
But no amount of free trial will make me actually play the game.
I want to pay once and never have to put a single thought to it ever again. Being able to play whenever I want without having to jump through any extra unnecessary hoops or having to think about the nasty reality I'd be trying to leave behind once I log in.
As well as being able to just stop playing without having to start up payments again when I want to play some more.
If there were a free trial I'd be OK with, it would be one that allows you full access, every feature in the game for a reasonable amount of time after which you'll decide whether to continue playing (opt in) or move on to something else. And when I say reasonable, I mean that towards the player-side, not the companies trying to make a profit. As soon as it becomes a manipulation tactic to get me to pay, the entire experience is tainted with a nasty aftertaste. If the game isn't good enough to speak for itself, then I don't feel the need to [have to play]. 🤷
TLDR;
The free trial still isn't good enough for me, [guild wars] and [eve online] raised the bar for the mmo buying experience and broke my ability to enjoy mmos respectively.
