Gaz was born with laser levels in his eyes, spirit levels are for mere mortals. The Chuck Norris of the electrical world.
Nice install 👌🏻 great tips aswell.
I installed one of these earlier this year. I used a bit of 20mm pvc pipe to run through into the house and into the box using silicone on the inside and outside of the box aswell as on the house
Finally, proper clips. Other versions of the BG socket the clips are terrible! Ended up changing it for an MK!
Great video. Some good pointers and nice to see the conductors doubled over.
No Gary, the sun came out to see how nicely you installed it!
Doesn’t drilling the drain hole ruin the IP rating and provide a sanctuary for many many insects? An M12 or M20 breather valve allows for pressure compensation whilst maintaining the IP rating
Personally I prefer the Click outdoor sockets as the mounting holes aren’t part of the main enclosure, and use stainless steel screws to mount them (selection and erection, external influences etc.)
Looks good, fitted quite a few of the BG outdoor sockets and this looks like an improvement.. I always silicone the top and sides of the socket between the socket and wall, not the bottom side as helps not allowing water to go down the back and any water that does can come out the bottom..
Thanks for adding your own top tips Steve 👍🏻
Steve, good tip there, if subject to running water down the wall i too do this. And yeah, this new model is a VERY DEFINITE improvement mate, the clips for the cover are better designed, more pliable, and you no longer need a rubber mallet or a superhero nearby to close the clips!
Excellent demonstration Gaz , I am waiting a delivery of one of those so I change the one I already have which is cracked so I have to replace it. Nice touch with the brick dust 👍 , not sure about the drain off hole as we know water will always find a way in . And does it not compromise the IP rating Nes Pah .
Fantastic video as always Gaz.
Brilliant demonstration, thankyou
Great video Gaz 🦾
Early comment - hope you watched the whole video.
Very well explained. Wish I watched this *before* I fitted two of them using guesswork 🤣
Click external sockets are far superior. Fixing holes are not located inside and a substantial rubber back plate seals the unit against the brick work. No need for silicone. Wouldn’t consider using any other make.
This is exactly the kit you need to ensure long term reliability
Superb, Gary 👍 👌
Great video thanks!!
Nice job! the only thing I would have done besides is run some Silicone above the cable entry eather above the rear entry point or near the top deflect any water running behind the box!
Nice video
I too have recently installed the BG outdoor socket as per the video, but what was disappointing with the knockouts around the sides of the back box that are ever so easily just push out rendering the IP rating "0" The fact that this is so easy reduces its robustness in service.
Literally never seen one “fall out”, yes they push FAIRLY easily but what event are you expecting to cause them to just drop out?
Nice 👍🏼
Good stuff Gaz. What about the IK rating?
Believe it or not, Aldi where selling this very socket a few months ago, I’ve fitted one under my Zappi.
Impressed
Nice to see that you have used the correct method to strip the outer cable sheathing 😉
Always 😉
I currently have a length of twin and earth running from a dedicated switch just inside my back door out to an external light. There is a double socket next to this switch that is connected to it by a few inches of cable inside the wall. If I wanted to use this existing length of twin and earth for an exterior socket, instead of the outside light (ie cut it just outside the wall and connect up as shown in this excellent video) would that work ok? Obviously I realise I'd lose the light but an outdoor socket would be much more useful anyway, especially as some more decorative lights can be used in this way. Thanks in advance for any responses.
Nice clips. I've got an MK on the side of my shed and one of the clips has already broken through not an awful lot of use.
That’s because MK are shit
Any comments regarding running cable through a cavity wall? With conduit through the wall or not? Angling the hole away from the socket to prevent condensation tracking back into the socket?
Thank you..
Opened up the drain holes on one before and wondered why it kept tripping the breaker - a slug had found it’s way in and fried itself between the live and earth
Gaz, it's both CPC and an Earth, in this application ;) CPC doesn't necessarily mean earth, and earth isn't necessarily CPC, but in this case, you know full well it's both ;) nice video tho ... one tip, I use clear sticks like sh*t, or neutral cure silicone. Old acetoxy 'acid' cure silicone liberates acetic acid and can destroy copper
Thanks for you review so nice new model of bg not sure which one is better bg or knightbridge also I dont know any update from MK
No are shit
Can I use this just to pop plug inside after use during summer as I dont have outside plugs
Thanks. My go to outdoor from sfix but never read instructions or cannot stomach it and just muddle through each time
That's some clever engineering on that socket!
👍🏻
you should always tap in new plugs in as well
I had always used the Mk water proof sockets until I used these on a job to match the existing ones, they are much better quality than the mk ones and about a fifth of the price ££. and GARY don’t use your hand as a hammer to knock the screws in on the end of your screwdriver or will regret it in later life 👍🏾
MK? Ewwwwwweeewwee
I noticed at the end of the video it was screwed to the fence. I need one for a water feature, can I attach it to my fence ? Thanks
Nice install Gaz. I've fitted a few of these recently and been impressed with the features/ quantity. They are also a good price compared to other brands. I'm gonna buy the smart one soon to try it out and have a play.
Thanks for the positive feedback 👍🏻
it'd be interesting to see how that goes, I tend to stick with Sonoff switches, with the PSU and relays replaced with something more compliant, and flashed with Tasmota firmware, but i like tinkering :)
Gaz! You could have breathed In 1 micron of that brick dust! Always use a M class extractor 🤟
Can you let me know the name of the product and where the same one demonstrated in the video can be purchased from please.. Thanks..
What screws/plugs does everyone use to make sure the socket/box is firmly fixed and doesn't come off the wall when pulling out those awkward plugs?
Never known one to pull out? Check your drill bit size?
But the red and grey plugs are AWESOME, can’t recall their make
I am hoping the front cover clips are good , my old design socket has broken clips due to poor design. I might change it one day 😂😂
Can confirm, have fitted a few of the new ones, they've addressed the cover clip issue also, secure, but easy to clip and unclip, especially compared to the old ones
@@TheChipmunk2008 the one I have has a metal pin which the clip rotates on and its broken so it doesn't close completely now . Annoyingly it's not been used much. 🙄🙄
@@dennisphoenix1 yeah have seen some like that :( i think at one point they had an extra brittle batch of plastic, i saw several :(
@@TheChipmunk2008 yeah not a good advertisement for them
@@dennisphoenix1 They REALLY have improved tho
This model will make me NOT hate fitting them (the threaded screws never fitted through the holes in the plastic, so you had to self tap a fine pitch screw through 1/4 inch of hard plastic lol
How about outdoor sockets that plug in PSUs for SELV lights etc would fit in and the cover close?
No they don’t.
@anthony Jones, they do a model (single I believe) with a larger domed cover for PSUs like that. We often end up fitting em in an IP rated box with a standard single socket though, as usually they are a 'permanent' fixture
@@TheChipmunk2008 yes saw a single the other day but customer had 4 plug in PSUs so I did the same as you twin socket and the enclosure with a 4 way extension it's a big box for the sake of the socket cover being a little larger, Tony Sound Electrical Services
@@anthonyjones5711 Yes,. TLC do such boxes, even comes with the 4 gang socket, excellent piece of kit for the price
Verso up with the best#verso
I really like your videos Gary. However, I never fit outdoor sockets with screw holes in the wiring cavity. Despite all precautions they are 4 unnecessary points of water ingress which undermine the IP rating. They should be in the 4 corners to isolate them from the wiring cavity. Also, use of a proper cable entry grommet makes silicone sealant unnecessary.
Drain hole was drilled over size for code
4mm max
'Code ' where? This is the UK and electricians here work to BS7671.
@@leeroots3527 the hole size to maintain the IP rating if the design allows for drilling under the design code for IP enclosures has a max size of 4 mm
Unlike your Pie Hole
can I ask what cable stripper that is?
قمت بربط مثل هذا في البصرة بالعراق وهو جيد جدا
Never use silicone sealant!
You are better off using a polymer based sealent/glue. That has a better grip on the wall than silicone sealant.
And it is also better to use dome head screws with a flat bottom as supposed to flat headed counter sink screws that you can pull thru the plastic housing. They also don't allow you to make small adjustments when mounting that a dome head screws do.
Gaz, your drill is going in reverse when you drill the plastic. Is this a trick ?
Shutter speed issue is all
@@TheChipmunk2008 stroboscopic? When he drills the wall it looks to be turning the correct way (clockwise).
@@MikeSmith-tx2lp yep exactly that, same effect as the wagon wheels going backward in old movies
All this talk about “drilling holes” and “tight holes” makes me think about my ex 😭
Nice. Plumbers mait is better. Splodge. Not blob! 😀
Where I can get one of these from
The shops
I would rather run a bead of clear silicone around the top and ends personally
These look like a massive improvement over the last version. They were awful. I opted for the Click Aquip sockets instead if I could.
Cable through external wall shall be sleeved.
Regulation number plz?
Sleeved?
#worldsbluntestdrill
Na I've got that one ;)
My socket arrived without screws, screw-caps, a mark for the drainhole or - most inexplicably - the 'quarter turn fixings'. I got it months ago & innocently assumed everything was in the box so I cannot return it. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT without thoroughly checking the contents.
The 1/4 turn screws are built in
@@efixx Not on mine - that's my point
All that time to seal it up and then purposely make a hole for the drain hole. You know, for the bugs and spiders to get in to keep warm.
I’ve never opened up a drain plug on any I’ve fitted and never had a problem.
If it's ip68 it should not need a drain hole. The fact that they included in design suggests it not up to standard. Also I would not install this in a front drive as could be used by an electric vehicle and could fail due to Chinese manufacture qaulity.
When the conductors are running a bit warm, you can end up with condensation inside the socket back box, therefore the drain hole is required.
They do an EV rated one for EV use. And with standard household cable, and the foam rubber guards, it's impossible to make it vapour proof, which is what would be required NOT to need the drain hole
The enclosure may be IP68 but if it's supplied via conduit from above making it the lowest point it needs a drain hole.
It isn't IP68, it's IP66. It's even in the video title. You should've gone to Specsavers! 👓😂
First one of these I fitted failed because I was continually advised not to drill out the drain hole, and condensation ruined it. Second one I fitted is in perfect nick after drilling out the drain hole. IP rating is in the bin, but at least the damn thing works.
You forgot to earth the backbox
