I don't think he WANTS a double decker. Those things are expensive to rent (and you don't own it, so always have to keep renting), and REDICULOUSLY expensive to own.
He's a smart business man with a DIY approach. Invested in his own studio, and bought his own van. He can now make MOSTLY pure profit from the non-personnel part of touring (except wear and tear and gas). Hell, he even brings LUNCH MEAT to make sandwiches when things get busy. Not ONE mention of going to eat out (cause it's expensive). Smart man, great guy, hard working, multi-faceted...that's how he got to $69 million dollars.
I feel really bad that Eric has to drive so much :( and he has no techs. Like not fair man he deserves a driver and a tech.
Yeah, a lot of factors go into stuff like this. At the end of the tour, he'll have more money left to bring home.
Of course! Being a touring musician myself I know that but I feel like the man has paid his dues, I guess just being in a death metal band means you can only progress so far when it comes to what you get paid as a touring musician and what luxuries you can afford or choose to afford.

its the US dude, the metal and rock scene is totally dead there. If he paid for a tech and a driver they'd be losing money on tour. I guarantee you they're barely even breaking even with no techs or driver. My band had to tour in a van even smaller than this where we put sleeping bags on TOP of the gear in the back. When we toured Europe we stayed in hotels and had a driver because we actually made money playing live

Hate Eternal doesn't tour too often and they play mostly small clubs so financially it makes the most sense to do it this way.

I think this was around the time they were both on the same tour. Which I really wanted to go to but they skipped out Toronto. Still don't know how the fux u go to Detroit but skip a major city like Toronto that's only 4 hrs away. Anyways hopefully next time.
This is super cool. I'm happy for the boys. It's tough to be an extreme-metal warrior, but stuff like this vehicle helps a lot, I'd imagine. Erik lives for his music and us fans appreciate it. Super talented dude. Good stuff.
It's definitely not an easy life, but it's very rewarding when fans come out to the shows.

yea i love how he talks about his van & the work they;ve done for it & how they use it, usually its moere of this is what we store in a prebuilt tourbus (ive watched mainly the dtbs of the established bands only seen a few vans so far)
Rutan is one of the best of all time IMO. His technical ability and ability to produce are just on another level.
I honestly dont know how many times ive watched this since 2018.. But whenever i see rutan on youtube i quickly click at watch

Recorded at Erik's studio Manna back with The absence Enemy unbound record (drums). Super nice guy and made sure we were all comfortable etc. he's a super cool guy. Very good mixer and basically does it all. I remeber him showing us this same Mercedes van back then when it was almost new. Very clever idea. Way cheaper then a bus and more reliable and comfy then a van and trailer.
I'm a longhaul truck driver,be at home once a month,the rest I spent it on the roads sleep in the truck bunks haha,I felt these dudes.I wanna try a new job a metal band tour bus driver hahaha
If you want to be a tour bus driver you gotta get in good with a band or the bus rental company. I believe those are the best ways.

Much respect. The man lives his life with purpose. He makes it happen. Some of you may feel bad for him but this DIY approach is only for the strong. Eric is pure death metal strength, my hero on many levels...
Erik Rutan is such a nice person. I had the pleasure of interviewing him in person sometime back in 2004 and again in 2007 when he was, incidentally, driving to a venue while on tour in the US. And I just recently 'rediscovered' "Conquering the Throne", which I now consider to be nothing less than a masterpiece of late-90s death metal.

You guys are EPIC, Eric. I've followed Hate Eternal since early 2000, a little bit after "Conquering" dropped. I've loved every release since, and followed your studio progress in tandem. It's been an incredible journey. Not only for you and those that you've played with, but also for the bands that you've produced. Bands like Into the Moat. They, along with Hate Eternal, heavily influenced my writing style and tonal choices when it came to crafting my own original ideas. I can't thank you enough, and begin to describe the impact you've had on me as a musician. Just, thank you. \m/

I can tell that erik is a very business savvy dude. If he wanted to, he could buy a tour bus, and rent it out to banfs and it would pay itself off. When his band tours, he can use said tour bus

There is just a lot more character to the van videos, especially this one. Erik also did a lot of awesome diy-customizations to this van that it makes the video so much better!

Everyone should give it a go at least once. It can be really stressful, but I guarantee it'll also be some of the most fun you've ever had
Amazing to see how much hard work they invest in their careers, while you think they are traveling first class at the expense of the record company, they are driving their own van.
This is reality for most metal bands these days. Lots of hard working musicians.

Totally agree! We have not featured Hirax yet, I'm not familiar with them, but I'll check them out.
Digital Tour Bus they are a thrash metal band from the 80s; they are part of the bands that appeared as kind the 2nd wave from around 86- 87, the frontman appeared on the GET THRASHED documentary, they've been playing for years, they seem like a hard working band.
With CC he'll have a proper buss and a chauffeur I expect!
He will definitely be on a full-size tour bus when touring with Cannibal Corpse.

Erik did a great job transferring this van into a touring van with beds. I thought his band would have an actual tour bus, i realize his band isn't huge but he's also a well known producer & has done a great job with Cannibal Corpse's albums.
