I'm pretty sure that's the cult I grew up in. My sister rebelled and married an "outsider" (he is like another brother and my parents fully see him as a son now). I'm a young adult but am still living with my parents. However, even though I'm still living under their authority I now have a phone and that has allowed me to start learning a lot more through free access to the internet.

Girl I dated, her family kept her under their thumb...big time. They controlled her finances, schedule, who she can date, etc. So, when I started at the company, and she met me...she took a stab in the dark and asked if I wanted to get drinks, but she would have to ask her parents. I thought it was weird, since she was 25 years old. I figured she must still live with them, since it was a somewhat expensive city to live in. Nope. We go out, and she paid for the drinks, no sooner than 10 minutes afterwards, she gets a call from her mother demanding to know why she was at a bar and what she spent her money on. It took some time, but I got her broken free of her controlling parents, her life is set up the way she wants it, and she dates whomever she wants. She hasn't spoken to her parents in almost 5 years now. Some say I should have just left things alone, but to me, I did her a favor. I gifted her the freedom of choice.

I feel like if my mom wasn't there to stop him, my dad might have been like that when I was younger. I lived pretty sheltered already, hardly ever going to people's houses or going by myself anywhere. I wasn't allowed to even leave my subdivision until I turned 16. Not across the street, not to a friends house, not even to a store close by. No after school activities. I've had social anxiety for as long as I can remember, and it's still taking a bit of effort to get it out of me for good.

I, too, have rescued a woman from a cult and her cult brainwashing. We aren't together anymore, but we have a beautiful son together and a great friendship. For the cult story, I'm so glad OP was able to get out of there and be happy with someone she actually loves! I would love to know more about the cult and what it's called. Obviously it is horrible situation, but I genuinely find cults a fascinating subject to read about. I'm a writer and have a lot of writer friends, so we all read up on a lot of subjects so that we can be as realistic and accurate as we can be in our works. Also we're kinda just a bunch of nerds who love psychology, humanities, history, theology, etc. I think it's actually pretty interesting and fun trying to understand what humans are capable of, what they have/are done/doing, and why they do what they do, even if there's a good chance as a species we'll never completely know- especially in my lifetime lol.

I feel like if my mom wasn't there to stop him, my dad might have been like that when I was younger. I lived pretty sheltered already, hardly ever going to people's houses or going by myself anywhere. I wasn't allowed to even leave my subdivision until I turned 16. Not across the street, not to a friends house, not even to a store close by. No after school activities. I've had social anxiety for as long as I can remember, and it's still taking a bit of effort to get it out of me for good.

I, too, have rescued a woman from a cult and her cult brainwashing. We aren't together anymore, but we have a beautiful son together and a great friendship. There's just red flags everywhere, especially about the family's "courtship rules." Boundaries in a relationship should be between the people in the relationship, NOT their family members. For the cult story, I'm so glad OP was able to get out of there and be happy with someone she actually loves! I would love to know more about the cult and what it's called. Obviously it is horrible situation, but I genuinely find cults a fascinating subject to read about. I'm a writer and have a lot of writer friends, so we all read up on a lot of subjects so that we can be as realistic and accurate as we can be in our works. Also we're kinda just a bunch of nerds who love psychology, humanities, history, theology, etc. I think it's actually pretty interesting and fun trying to understand what humans are capable of, what they have/are done/doing, and why they do what they do, even if there's a good chance as a species we'll never completely know- especially in my lifetime lol.
Anyone who thinks that males and females can't have non-romantic friendships are living in a dream world. They need to grow up and buy a clue. My best friend is a guy from my high school days. I even tried coming onto him once when I was drunk (and *STUPID* ) but he shut it down immediately knowing it would interfere with our friendship. Next morning I couldn't believe what I had done. That would have likely killed that friendship dead. Thank the stars he saw that and didn't react with lust. I love him to pieces; like a brother.
